Bruh, the Haiku bits are great for emersion, the scenery and music is simply breathtaking. And the hot springs serve as great bits of flavor text that fleshes Jin out as a character, and it shows more of his relationships with the side characters.

Yeah they help break it up a bit and give you time to reflect yourself, but I think it'd be good if your choices in the haiku effected the headband you receive with stats, so depending on what verses you choose the headband could give you more health or stagger / melee damage or a mix of the 3. It'd give the player more agency and immersion whilst still allowing you the moment of quiet reflection

I'm 2 years late, I agree with a lot of what you said but here's what I disagree with: Witcher 3's Velen isn't trying to be "beautiful", though it is in my eyes, it's a reflection of the unkempt state of war and despair that the region clearly suffers from. Not everything needs to be eye-candy. The Witcher 3 had more than enough beauty presented in Skellige and Kaer Morhen, which you didn't mention in this review. The Haiku spots and hot springs in Ghost of Tsushima are unique and important ways of immersing the player with the world and its main character, they're supposed to be anti-action and provide moments of calm and reflection, which most games lack, though in order to appreciate them you'd need to have an attention span longer than 2 seconds and a sensitivity to silence and art so I don't blame you for thinking that they're boring and "lame". Yes that was a slight jab because I want you to try to appreciate the meaning behind such moments and forget about the damn headbands. As with 99% of game reviews, the music again never gets enough credit. Was there any part of the soundtrack that stood out for you? Did the song playing during your Nobu's passing deserve no mentioning? In any case, great review.

Just to touch on your point about the ludonarrative dissonance with the dicotamy between ghost an samurai. You are meant to feel opposed to using ghost methods during the first 2 acts, as Jin is. I found that it wasn't an example of ludonarrative dissonance but in fact the opposite. When I first started playing I felt I should try my best to play the samurai way as Jin feels it's wrong, but as the story develops and you are shown time and time again that the samurai way doesn't work as the Mongols are using their honour against them and by the end of Act 2 where Jin pretty much falls into his Ghost persona whole heartedly did I start using ghost tactics more and more. When I got to act 3 I pretty much dived completely into ghost. Something I was working very hard to not do at the beginning of the game. I went on Jin's journey with him and I have heard many people did the same, which leads me to believe their was intentional.

Fam they never try to make Khotun Khan sympathetic or relatable. They're trying to draw a parallel between Khotun and Jin as Jin starts to get more brutal. Khotun even says later "the samurai live by a code of honour, it makes them rigid and easy to break. The Ghost has no such limits. This makes him dangerous."

I disagree about the lock on . With a lock-on mechanic you simply wouldn’t be able to have the free flowing combat you are supposed to obtain by late game , it would interrupt the flow of combat and you wouldn’t be able to have a real samurai power fantasy , I completely understand why they didn’t use one . Just because we are used to games like this having a mechanic doesn’t mean it was the correct choice for the game . It was intentional

You stated that fast travel only took a few seconds on ps5, but when I played the game on ps4 the fast travel and load times were easily only about 2 seconds, as every single time I fast travelled I would pick up my phone, as that had become a habit after the minute long load times of other games, but I could barely pick my phone up and unlock it before loading In. Never had a problem with ludonarrative dissonance as I did play the Samuri way for a while in the game but the more I unlocked Jin's more stealth abilities the more I leaned into the Ghost gameplay. I really do feel like the game pushes you that way the longer you play as the enemies can get a bit overwhelming so having smoke bombs, kunai, and those spicy multi-assassination kills helps out a lot. I only ever played the game on hard so I don't know how aggressive the AI would be on normal and playing on lethal sounds like a drag.

Great fucking review! However, I have to disagree on the haiku point. I actually really enjoy the way it works in the game. I like the small moments of reflection (same goes for the hot springs) after battle. I can see why some would find the haikus boring if you're looking for constant action. That's not how it is for me though. I rarely run or even sprint in the game, so after clearing out an enemy territory, it's nice to just calm down again. Also, I think the reason for no wrong answers when making a poem is because it is poetry. You make the poem YOU want to (based on the choices given to you), which is a part your own journey through the game. I realize i made a pretty long comment about damn haiku poems, but I feel like it's a massively misunderstood part of the game lol Edit: Review might not by the right term, but great fucking video nonetheless!

Haiku existed at that time, but as part of a larger poem called Hokku, itself the opening of an even larger poem called Renga. I think it’s a pretty tasteful anachronism to use the format that’s more familiar to the audience to which the game was marketed. That, and people would probably get bored if they were made to compose poems that were any longer than Haiku. Between that, and the implementation of Katana over Tachi, Sucker Punch did a really good job implementing aspects of Japanese culture that Western audiences are more familiar with than their true historical counterparts, while not being disrespectful about it at the same time.

Whilst the game isn't a movie, obviously, it is cinematic by nature. It has story to tell with already pre-existing characters. I'd get the criticism for another type of game, but not really this one. Plus, if one branches out too much than that creates a vacuum for the Devs to fill. Choice can only be afforded at certain points in the narrative that are in a sense inconsequential. Stories don't always have to be maleable. Choices don't always have to be four dimensional. It works for a game like this with a story like this.

It adds to the choas of war tbh I’m playing it for the first time I will say fighting indoors is terrible sometime but I’m about 30 hours in and I’m enjoying it so much but I think the trick is to move the camera to the right angle bc that helps me alot I’ll Flickr the camera to the right place so I can properly see what’s going on but it can definitely use a slightly harder lock but not hard lock or anything bc I feel like how chaotic the combat can be adds alot to it bc Jin is still young so it kinda makes sense he doesn’t know who to attack first and stuff like that bc it only happens when it’s with mobs and Jin was basically a new samurai and hadn’t seen a lot of war before the ghost of Tsushima takes place

Think you missed the point of TW3 and red dead 2's art style. The intention of TW3 is to be drab with hints of beauty here and there. The world in the witcher 3 is dying and bleak because it represents the death of an era, which is a common theme in all the witcher books. Also why red dead 2? That game is arguably the most artistically balanced out of all of them when talking about art style. Each area is filled to the brim of a variety of areas that convey color, darkness, life, death.

My hope, is in the upcoming part two, his transformation will be complete, as he hits mainland Japan, and recruits shinobi allies and students in his quest to rid Japan of mongol dogs. In the end, the shogun will see the uses for Sakai’s tactics, and establish an order of ninjas, or ‘creed’ if you will…. Heh

Although you’re given the choice on how to handle the combat, the game is designed in such a way where you are encouraged to take a more Ghost route. At first you can take the direct approach, only using the stealth tactics when necessary. But as the game progresses you get stronger more varied enemy groups where you can fight them off more easily if you use the Ghost tactics of smoke bombs, grenades, using stealth to thin the herd before committing to combat, etc. Of course, the fact that you can play anyway you want regardless is the game trying to have its cake and eat it to when it comes to the theming vs player options. Hence the luto narrative dissonance. I remember in my first play through I felt more inclined to ve the honorable samurai, but as the game went on, and the narrative turned darker, I used darker methods. My god this game is amazing!

As a writer and poet myself, I absolutely loved the Haiku mini-games. I understand the reason why somebody wouldn't like it if they're not big into literature, but I thought they were perfect. It slows things down and forces not only Jin, but the player to think about the nature of things. Writing Haiku is also a very personal thing, and a test of skill for the poet. The idea of grading the Haiku kinda works against the purpose, as the style is meant to focus on the harmony of things. Art is also very subjective, so grading whether a Haiku was good or not... also defeats the purpose. Again, I think you have to be into literature and poetry to really understand the direction they went with it. I do, so I loved it.

Metamorphic, if you are reading this, regarding the choice option, the one you discussed in minute 9: I think its not ment to be a choice and the gameplay refect this especialy early. In the beguinning its hard to fight head on so the developers expect you to improvize somehow; with assassinations, ghost weapons and such. The game(gameplay) does a great job to make both the player and Jin understud the reason why its nessesary to "be the ghost" when fighting the mongols. The developers probably expected you to realise in the same moment as jin that the there was a trap set up for the samurai. Thats why in my opinion there is no choice to be made there, Jin is shown as a tactician and would avoid casualties in order to retain a healthy army to reclaim tushima. Granted, there is cognitive disonace, if you try enough times you may jusy beat 300(or how many ever the fuck) mongols in tsushima and it will be fun. Anyway, enjoying the videos bro hope this commemet finds you well, if at all, have a good one

There are things in GoT that I can point to as lacking - very little going on in the world, some pacing troubles, bad open-world habits like endless trinkets and fetch quests - but the core experience of traversing a gorgeous world and engaging in combat is SO transcendentally great that none of this matters. The combat is butter-smooth and profoundly satisfying, and it seems like every meter of the world was meticulously designed to produce a stunning aesthetic experience. The stealth is actually pretty good too, especially for a western AAA game. Even the parkour is pretty solid and fun. Then there's little touches like the buttons to bow, play your flute, and stylishly sheathe your sword that all add immersion. I expected to be 'meh' about this game when I picked it up from PS+, and got sucked into like 100 hours of nonstop fun and photography.

Honestly, I love ghost of Tsushima but the Witcher is the golden standard for open world rpgs. You cant compare the story in ghost of Tsushima to the story in the Witcher 3. The Witcher has one of the most In depth stories to ever be in a game period. The Witcher also offers the most varying paths and endings in any open world rpg that I know. Ghost of Tsushima is top tier but the Witcher is the golden standard.

@@aaronjones5742well the Witcher has a book to base it’s story from while Tsushima (yes it’s loosely based on a true historical event but the story was crafted from scratch) doesn’t so I would argue the writers of the Witcher had an easier time 🙂 Both are great games anyway and I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants to try open world.

I like and agree with alot of what you said but do want to point out a couple of the things I disagreed on. For the lock-on I don’t think the game needs one, with how surrounded you get and how you be to be able to attack anyone who is a treat to you it helps to not have that and just a soft lock on to help combat flow better The hot springs and haikus let you get a better insight to how Jin thinks because of course he’s not the type of character to talk about how he feels to others so these small moments in time where we let him choose on how to reflect on stuff in the story or characters themselves helps you understand him more. The haikus let you see his insights on things like death, battle, harmony and other aspects of life. It also lets you really take in the beauty of the world and gives you a break from all of the fighting. Now the big one and major thing I heavily disagree with is the ludo narrative dissonance because I believe and know there is no ludo narrative dissonance. First of all this isn’t a branching story it’s a linear narrative which has same outcome every single time, there’s just different ways to approach combat and every way would be a way Jin approaches it. At the start Jin would want to approach it the regular Samurai way with stand offs and head on but as the game progresses there’s more and more enemies which are harder to deal with so makes it harder to just charge head first, still possible but just harder. As the game progresses you learn more and more ghost skills and get more items which a samurai wouldn’t use. Using stealth you can unlock the different stances faster by getting 2 points along with the 1 for killing an enemy leader. The ghost tools become way so much more helpful and a necessity to help deal with the large groups of enemies. Ghost stances gives you some instant kills and is way easier to get full if you decide to go stealth since combat puts you at risk of getting hit. Chain assassinations is more reliable than stand off, while you can get more kills off of stand off with the Sakai armor you get a reliable 3 kills with assassinations. Jin himself also realizes that the Mongals know all too well of the Samurai tactics, it’s what got the entire Samurai forces killed in just 1 battle. Jin didn’t see any other option other than to go in and poison the Mongals or else his uncle Lord Shimura would lead again another troop of Samurai to their deaths which is completely avoidable. I’ve heard from many people and of course myself included to ended up using more and more ghost tactics by Act 3 I gave up using the Sakai armor which I basically used all the time when I unlocked it for the ghost armor to really embrace the ghost persona. In fact the only choice you get in the story is letting your uncle live or not and that’s basically up to how you ended up taking away from the story. Did Jin throw his honor away or not. Does he comply with his Uncle and give his Uncle the honorable death or let his uncle live because he doesn’t want to kill his uncle and sees there’s other ways to handle situations.

Love the game to death, but agree on one of your early criticisms. Namely, that the later areas aren’t as visually appealing and interesting. The northern territories and snow are simply put, bland, and are a glaring contrast compared to the first areas. It’s like the developers put all their effort into the early environments with vibrant color contrasts and variety of locales, then got lazy near the end and said, _”ah, fuck it……it’s winter!”_ Otherwise it’s hard to find significant fault, but the end game is always a drag to me because of the snow. Good analysis, mahalos. 🤙🏼

7:04 13:51 I believe it was done intentionally to make you experience what jin is going through and how he was forced to go against his uncle's Overbearing sense of Arrogant pride to do what was necessary and needed to save his people and I found that you can use the wind Stance on shield fighters to break their guard as well, Overall the game is awesome, near perfection can't wait for the sequel to come! 💯🔥😁😉👍

Fantastic breakdown of this brilliant game, yeah its got some flaws and some things could be made a bit deeper both story and gameplay wise, and it may not be the most original game or do anything groundbreaking but everything it does do, it does incredibly well and slickly. Perfect no, but not far off at least for me anyway. Again great review well done and thanks for the hard work, just subbed to check out your other stuff

Really the only complaint i have about this game is the amount of things to find while exploring. This is mostly only relevant in ng+. On my first playthough i would travese the world not knowing what to expect. One of my favorite parts of open world games. However after a while you mostly start to notice the same minigames spread out across the world with a few things changed around. The only time i actually felt like i was truely exploring was when i would find the cosmetic pieces since they were always a kind surprise to come across them, whereas, whenever i would come across a fox den or shrine, i would know exactly what to expect in a way saying "oh you again" and it would just not be on the same level of excitement. The mongol camps also fall into this category of kind of repetitive. This became a problem in ng+ since it didnt really add to the replayablity of the game. Really the only thing worth replaying is the story, and secondary missions. Of course this is the main part of the game, however i do always like to explore a little more incase i missed something, but i didnt with this game. However, Iki island heavily improved in this area. I think the main thing that fixed it was the smaller size. You didnt have to wait too long to find an area that looked completely different from where you were 2 minutes ago, with specialized missions and asthetics. In tsushima you would have to wait an entire act sometimes to really see any variety in the world, like asthetics (act 1) and even the kind of side missions you would find(although these would never really change either). This may seem like a big complaint but it really isnt. This is such a small observation and extremely nip picky, but its is an area that i would like to see improved. To me, this is the difference between a 10/10 and a 9/10. But the world is so damn beautiful I could barely even tell.

Explosive arrows made the final fight way too easy for me even on hard. Usually in the boss fights they disabled your tools but since they introduced mobs I guess they had to give you the option. In my opinion they should have started with the mob fight and ended with the 1 on 1 with khan.

GoT is a great game but it’s just too much like Assassin’s Creed, and every other open-world game released over the past 10 years, to be considered near perfect. It’s gorgeous and can be a lot of fun, but also familiar and more than a little derivative.

Too much like AC? LOL. No dude. They are only similar in that they are in the same genre. Wildly different in terms of quality, storytelling, atmosphere, i.e. all the things I laid out in the vid. Also, a thing doesn't need to be original to be perfect. In fact, always the perfect things are a honed version of things that came before.

@@Meromorphic I appreciate the effort that goes into a video of this length and I’m glad you really loved the game. Obviously, not every game has to be original to be great. However, for me, every trailing or escort mission or mongol base I had to clear in GoT felt all too familiar; there’s just little there that feels fresh despite the brilliant aesthetic. That and unlike Red Dead Redemption 2 or the Witcher 3, the story missions just feel so flat and vanilla.

You completely missed the point of Tsushima if you thought your choices mattered because they don’t it’s a narrative driven game not an rpg. Most games have a set narrative other than said rpgs and even some if not a majority of rpgs have a single narrative if you factor in jrpgs. Ultimately Tsushima isn’t about happy endings rather losing it all to save the majority, the effects of the trolly problem. Save the handful you love and preserve yourself or lose yourself and everything you love for the sake of the greater good. And unlike the classical trolly problem not acting isn’t a solution as it’s his obligation and authority to deal with this issue no matter how outclassed he may be. With the spare ending being canon we know jin isn’t becoming less moral as he becomes more brutal, rather more disillusioned with the later parts of the story showing not his enjoyment which he says the enjoyment of such authority and judgement would make one a monster, but rather he feels vindicated by it, genuinely disregarding his tactics as necessary for the enemy which is true because beyond the easy combat system jin isn’t supposed to be a one man army in the up front sense because it’s not realistic and so aren’t some other elements but those other unrealistic elements tie into culture and folklore whilst Jin being a one man army samurai, isn’t a culture or folklore thing as jin even admits he cannot hope to face the mongols in the same way and win nor can all the samurai together. The choice you would’ve made would’ve killed over 100 men on the bridge and ultimately left Tsushima more defenseless. Whilst Jin’s saved Tsushima. NOT YOU JIN, who isn’t a created character with outside agency. He’s simply who he was written to be, we are here to play HIS story not change it.
