Honestly when looking at mythologies as a whole for their cultures it is very surprising at how many similarities there are. In point of fact from everything I've seen with Gaijin's videos the "misconception" that all Yokai are goblin's is actually probably the closet to the truth for how one would place them in European mythologies as they are very much Fae, (fairies in modern terms) for the kind of roles they fill, their natures, and what seperates them from Kami which a similar line is drawn between Fae and some "Earthly Gods" Like Yule or Litha

@@r.j.penfold With the way you are looking at the term "mongoloid" would refer to more like Neanderthals, and Cromagna, though aside from the "corrupted human" aspect of Oni explored in the series, it is a stretch to call any creature like Oni, Windigos, or Fae, as a subspecies of human. Many may be Humanoids, but in the end all that says is they have a human like body structure. Many of the ones he has had to kill I couldn't help but agree with the kindness he has shown to them in their final moments. Even the first real boss fight in the final selection. Even though I study a lot about yokai since I found your channel, I always learn something new. Though there is something to say about Nezuko as well... Much like Oni revel in their misdeeds and love of murder in this anime, the Hashira have all, as I believe Shinobu hinted to, go beyond the murder of oni for survival and protection, but allow the horrors of what such oni do to taint their hearts. Doing so evaluates the once humans as mere pests, and, if we paint Oni as another race or cree of humans, show that the Hashira had to remove a certain part of their own humanity in order to destroy onis.

So one of the things I take away from this video is that the term "demon" actually fits really as a translation. Since in some more recent "lore" based around demons they are sometimes represented as corrupted humans, either they signed over their soul and now work as demons or they went to hell and got turned into them there. To me humans being the origin for demons makes a lot of sense and who knows maybe the writers of tv-shows like supernatural that use this concept took inspiration from Oni.

So, I love this episode, but I felt compelled to point out that Goombah was mistaken in comparing these Oni to vampires, since in folklore, and with the exception of China, vampires have no explicit weakness to daylight (in fact, many vampires are active or in human guise during the day), garlic’s... a bit of a loose connection, since many monsters are warded off by certain herbs or plants, and vampires aren’t typically created via the exchange of fluids; rather, they tend to be born out of malice and vengeance, or through a curse. But then when I thought of that last bit I realized: folklore vampires and Oni are the same thing, filtered through a cultural lens! Both are formerly human, corrupted and stripped of their humanity, and cursed to plague Mankind for eternity. That’s... I find that mind-blowing.

"Inhuman emotions" Seems to me that these are the most human of emotions, pain and suffering.
@ChivalrousyWalrusy5 жыл бұрын
I think the idea is the implementation of the emotions is what is inhuman. Or, painfully human which is often seen as abhorrent. Sort of a series of fables to instruct moral lessons in how to deal with suffering and avoid inflicting it on others.

Saitaina Malfoy What is inhuman is the way they deal with the emotions

Codename1 1 True, but there still the most basic human emotions and how they deal with them, to me, are also the most basic of humanity. Yes, it's not GOOD, but it's human and real and the idea of labeling it as "other" bothers me. Maybe it's just my very Western upbringing were all demons or Onii are bad and to me experiencing these emotions and having those thoughts aren't bad in themselves... ... it's hard to explain. 🤷♀️
@Saitaina5 жыл бұрын
The Chivalrous Walrus I think you come close to catching into a more base of why that line bothered me, and my line if thinking between having the emotional reaction and trying not to influence everyone else with it. I can't really put into words why it bugged me, except it was almost like trying to cut out basic parts of humanity as something that was "other" when it's not...but as you say, it's more about what you DO with those emotions, ie: I could have taken the years of misery being bullied and turned it outwards and became another shooting statistic (thankfully I didn't), or I could turn it inwards and harm myself (keep NDA did that unfortunately) or I could conquer it and use it to build up others (working on this one). Two options are bad and would be what stories would warn us of(an Onii, a ghost story) and one would be an epically heroic take where I get a talking cat side kick *hopeful look*

Saitaina Malfoy well I thought it’s like this no society thriving would not consider murder and thievery an inhuman response. At least that’s what I think.

It's somehow good, even with the tone whiplash sometimes. Comedy is the "in your face" kind of comedy, but it's needed because we have some real emotions in there...

It looks to me like the closest thing to oni in other cultures would the wedingo. Well, I guess we have some similar tales here in the Nordics, such as the gast, myling and gloso, but they become such creatures only after death.

Interesting look at oni! Do you plan to do a video on Onryo in the future? (The most famous one in modern media would be Sadako from the Ring movies). As an aside, the thing about sunlight killing vampires is newer than most people realise, originating in the 1926 movie Nosferatu. In the novel, sunlight merely weakens Dracula, it doesn't kill him.

@Gaijin Goomba Would you say that Japanese oni are parallels to North American windigo?
@alana.dyer.author5 жыл бұрын
I could answer that I guess (I am a mix of Ojibwe and Mi'kmaq) Yes they are simmilar to an Oni but I kinda want to do a history lesson and comparison so enjoy reading 😊 The Wiindigoo (Windigo/Wendigo) is a creature that used to be human but was consumed by greed, gluttony and wanting excess (basically they were greedy jerks as humans) and with this greed came an insatiable hunger till they consumed human skin (canabalism yuuuum) and became a gaunt creature resembing a humanoid form with grey skin stretched across a starved frame. Causing mass murders as well as cultural taboos (again due to greed) in the Abouriginal community also caused the human to become a Wiindigoo. Its similar to an Oni but where as an Oni becomes one by itself because of the taboos its commited, A Wiindigoo can become one either by the greed mentioned above or if a human were to spend a certain amount of time around one (basically if your bestie is a Wiindigoo in time you will become one to) A Oni has a variety of different apperances because of the different crimes commited or because of the trauma they went through (like the one with the scorned lover [that prick]) but a Wiindigoo will always have the same appearance except for the lips at times (emaciated skeloton with grey skin stretched over the frame of protruding bones, ripped bloodied (or even ripped dried) lips, sunken in black eyes and the stench of decay) Oni are not associated with any season and can occure whenever and where ever. But Wiindigoo are associated with Winter when food is scarce and famine and death are high causing an increase in the Wiindigoo population. Winter is when the worst of human nature comes out because there is low food supplies, tensions are high because of being stuck in one place and death occured the most because of starvation. So its no wonder that the greed consumed many into performing heinous acts turning them into a Wiindigoo. But they can still happen through out the year but that rarely happens. So yes they are similar in a way but also completely different

Alana Dyer What about the more commonly known form of a gaunt and emaciated Man/Bear/Deer Hybrid? Where does that version come from?
@alana.dyer.author5 жыл бұрын
@@LordHayabusa85 different tribes have their own versions. Its like if you were to go to Japan and listened to the tale about a specific oni, then depending on the region the tale would have different details.

Alana Dyer kinda like the regional versions of Greek Myths, like how Aphrodite was the divine lover of Nerites in one version of that myth and Poseidon was the divine lover of Nerites in another version of that same myth.
