When Zuko snuck into the Dai Li stronghold where they were holding Appa, Iroh followed him in. And not only would he have had to share the skill of infiltration, but also of tracking because I am sure Zuko would have been paying attention to his surroundings and making sure he wasnt being followed. But it turns out he is also good at assessing the situation, taking it very seriously, and with the utmost subtlety. Especially as the Blue Spirit. It’s almost like he turns into a completely different person, and at the time, I couldn’t process him as a real ninja. Ironic. I can safely say from experience, when you’re serious, determined, and angry enough, you find a way BY ANY MEANS to accomplish your goals. The fact that Zuko is blunt and reckless by nature makes seeing him as a ninja not only surprising, but very gratifying. Seeing this video proves just how hard Zuko worked and how determined he was, not to mention the actual attention to detail a cartoon in the early 2000’s paid to Asian folklore, or just, espionage in general.

I feel like Zuko has a big problem, though: his scar. It’s a giant identifier, taking up a quarter of his face and is very visible in scenes where he isn’t impersonating the Blue Spirit, like when he’s with Katara as you’ve shown. And with Zuko being a PRINCE, I’d say he’s fairly well know, at least in the Fire Nation, and with him having that scar visible while a prince, having that exact same scar on a “random” ninja would tip off whoever he’s having to go up against, especially if they don’t seem too particularly fazed by a ninja attack. This was solved by using the mask, yes, but like I said, there are a few other times when he’s doing similar missions without the mask. I’m not saying this instantly makes him not a ninja or that he’s any less ninja for it, but it does seem to be a glaring (badum-tsh) issue.

Well, keep in mind, people aren't always attentive and get wrong information. You could call the spiky balls suspended in air during her fight in the Kingdom’s Edge tools, but just barely. Then again, she does have her own form of a grappling hook, her silk, and she is certainly agile enough to learn those techniques. Maybe Silksong will give us more evidence, with the trailers and early gameplay showing tools and having more emphasis on agility and platforming.

It's actually amazing the significance color can play. The Blue Spirit was a moniker taken lore and theatre in-universe, and in one episode of the series Katara took on the guise of the Painted Lady, water spirit that was known for its healing abilities and had was covered red paint. Now, I'm sure Gaijin Goombah can verify this, but I heard that in Japan, blue is the color of Intelligence, hence why the Blue Ranger in Super Sentai and Power Rangers usually tends to be the Smart Guy of the Team. Sokka and Katara, as members of one of the Water Tribes, also are prone to wearing lots of blue because of its general association with water but it works doubly so for Sokka because of his having earned the reputation of the "idea guy" of the group, even at potential low points for himself personally and the team itself he still manages to make use of his considerable Intelligence. Now, to be fair, none of the main cast are dumb but their intellectual capabilities tend to be limited in scope because of their understanding of things, Sokka is the most curious of the group and has developed a much more expansive range of understanding than the rest of the group, thus developing a more robust and flexible intellectual approach, he's much more capable of thinking on his feet than most of the other core cast. The only one that really has the ability to beat Sokka out in flexibility of thinking is, ironically enough, Zuko, mostly because Zuko was forced to adapt his approaches to things. While Sokka usually tried to think things out and plan for every shortcoming of the plan itself, Zuko usually had a tendency to not think things out and develop contingencies for when things went wrong, as was pointed by his uncle Iroh after the Siege of the North while he was berating Zuko for his inability to plan ahead. Now Zuko took this chastising to heart, eventually, and worked with much more of a plan that had contingencies for when something went wrong, as was seen during some of the later episodes when he officially joined Team Avatar. The Earth Kingdom has most of its attire as brown and green, which are typical colors for representing earth as an element, brown, and as fertile ground for plants, green. The Water Tribes as shown as usually wearing blue with bits of white, which is very representative of waves and their cresting and crashing. Fire is typically shown in red and orange, which are common colors for the representation of fire, and passion and anger. And the Air Nomads are shown with their arrow marking being a lighter blue than what is usually shown as attire for the Water Tribes, but they're also shown wearing orange robes, which are typical in the representation of Buddhist monks but the color orange is also known for improving your ability to breath, which is useful when living at high elevations, the color orange is also used to represent invigoration, Ang is the most energetic of the main cast and tends to act as a source of invigoration for other members of the main cast. I'm sure Gaijin Goombah could probably do an entire video color meanings in Avatar, and possibly other series as well. I mean, just look at what the color red means in a Japan and how impassioned he was talking about why Tori Gates are red and the meaning behind that. That all said, I've gotten a bit rambly so I'll try to stop it here. A game that does a wonderful job with colors, in my opinion, (probably because the game has literally nothing but images, music, and non-verbal dialogue) is Journey. Yes, I know it's considered an older game now, but it's still probably something you should all check out. Also, the last stretch of the game has freaking Tori Gates all about while you're basically going through a flying section near the end of the game but even before you get there you're running around a desert with ruins, a subterranean tunnel network, and a cold mountain top that has the cold so intense it's sapping away the power stored in your scarf. Yeah, in Journey your just this figure decked out in all red running about, when you collect the power-ups you start growing this scarf, the power in the scarf allows you to move a bit more effectively but only for a limited time. The whole game seems to have a theme with colors and cloth, probably something Gaijin Goombah would want to look into. After all, you never know where you'll find some surprisingly deep cultural elements.

I love how this video both emphasizes how absolutely amazing Zuko is and how stupid Admiral Zhao was.

What a coincidence! I just spent the last 3 days rewatching the whole avatar series. And yeah, Zuko is my favorite. I was always impressed on how skilled he seemed at the infiltration stuff in particular. But never in my mind have I connected the dots for him to be a ninja! That's honestly super neat!

Course this does make sense; Fire Nation is heavily inspired by the industrial period of Japan; down to architecture, philosophy and weapons.
@leosolcanonizado40654 жыл бұрын
Actually the Fire nation architecture is more close to SouthEastern asian architecture (see the red and gold motifs) while the weapons are closer to Ancient Chinese militaries. But the you are spot on with the philosophy/propaganda draws from Imperial Japan with some communism and military-industrial complexes.

5:27 Wouldn't an Airbender be more stealthy as they could completely get rid of sound, create noises as a distraction or to silently (to bystanders) talk to a person you are moving with, move the sound of people speaking to your ears to better your ability to gather intel or to scare the enemy with soundbending (theoretically), they would be more mobile so it would be easier to be above a 45 degree angle from a person, the air is invisible so using it wouldn't draw nearly as much attention as fire if you are using it stealthily, and (theoretically) they could stop the air from acting as a fluid whilst still being able to make it have any shape they want, so they could solidify the air inside a lock to make an air key, make air tools such as bullets of condensed air or a glider staff made purely of air, , pick things up with air as if they were using telekinesis (which could be used to fake earth/water bending), or even make a ghost-like air copy of themselves to put in dangerous situations instead of themselves for survival purposes such as the cooler situation an Airbending ninja wouldn't even need to be in there to take it apart, they could just use an air-ghost, or it could be used as a genjutsu combined with sound-bending as ghosts are scary. and if they really needed fire they could exit the molecules in the air as to heat them up to create fire (theoretically). And for the clone thing? well, an Airbender could use the hay technique, but then actually make them move using the air around the doll, making it more convincing and useful. and whilst swimming an Airbender could bring air with them to breathe in case there wasn't another source of air in a confined space of water. A shinobi that can utilise Airbending could also use sound-bending to change their voice to make disguises more convincing. but if all this hypothetical/non-cannon talk about non-fluidous air and sound-bending isn't convincing you then what about the fact that Airbenders are also taught to avoid violence and look for a more peaceful approach, and wouldn't ya know it but shinobi also use fighting as a last resort or Airbender's shaved heads, which would stop hair from falling onto the ground and in turn making less evidence that you were there, or how about the gliders they use to fly, they could be used to put one's self above a 45-degree angle from a person which is an actual ninja Jutsu, or maybe they could wear more armour to would protect themselves without losing mobility because they can use the air around them to help carry the weight. All in all, I think that an Airbending ninja would be better at stealth than any other bending style, Firebending coming in second.

Fun fact, it was once said that the idea of stealth that the ninja used in the sengoku era first formed in china by people who lived in the mountains, using the the environment to defend themselves from bandits, the tools weren't as plentiful though.

Excellent video! One small detail I think would have been nice to mention is during Zuko's infiltration of zhao's stronghold, he uses a bucket of water to douse one of the enemy firebender's attacks. I'd like to think this fits under the jutsus and use the elements to your advantage, in this case water.

I really liked how Zuko's non-bending fighting style was developed. As to seeing that he really didn't master Firebending until the events of the show, he developed his skills as a swordfighter and a stealth warrior to compensate for his initial lack of Firebending skills.

Can't wait to see part 2, love this series so much! A character I would love to see an episode on is the Pokemon Ninjask. It's a strange Pokemon based around a cidada rather than being a clear ninja but I think there are a lot of potential references sort of like Greninja with moves like substitute and doh me teambut with its own unique aspects to set it apart. An example is his ability speed boat which is another type of the clone technique where the ninja would move so fast it would appear as if many ninja were there. I dunno just think it could make for an interesting episode and a lot of its moves relate to sand (sand attack and dig) and it's actual stats relate with frail defences but high speed and attack to rush in and rush out with baton pass or u turn being great escape moves
