So I get complaints about the frame. But the Akatsuki in anything other than mirror plating feels wrong to me. That was the defining design feature of that particular Gundam. It might not be for everyone but I'm not going to fault Bandai for doing that. What I will fault them for is not cleaning the mold lines before plating. I don't see how you get a good decal on the plated surface.

The thing is they really didn't have to: the reason they supposedly used the same frame was to draw on the fact that the Akatsuki was based off the Strike frame in lore, but they could have just made a whole new inner RG inner frame that just looked like the old one.

Old HG Akatsuki was underrated for it's time (certainly much better than garbo HG destiny which I also have). But if you collect mixed scale, the cheap 1/100 Akatsuki is actually perfect.

I hope for modern RG IBO kits one day, as the HG Gundam kits from that line seem to have the most issues that need resolving out of the box. Color correcting stickers and their own version of IRGS with the super weak waist joint and arms that usually fail to hold up the frequently very large weapons are prevelant throughout the lineup.

Those strike parts really kill it for me. Yeah, I understand Chrome-plating is expensive in model kits and toys, more so than paint. That is why Bandai had to cut costs as much as possible for this guy. However, Bandai could have offset those same costs by designing a frame that could've been reused as much as possible. I am sure people would be excited to see a Strike 2.0 or, you know, Real Grade versions of the Duel, Blitz, and Buster Gundams. Another way for them to offset the costs could've been with the use of the usual gold plastic Bandai uses regularly for frames and such. Plain yellow plastic would've been great, at least for me. But I feel people would've still complained because they did not use chrome plating. Pretty sure people would still have issues with gold paint.

Lucky you if you got to preorder the Shiranui... This makes me wonder if I should wait for those third party joints before building it as I'm not sure it'll handle disassembly well. And I suppose the usual strengthening techniques with glue/nail varnish/joint guards don't work with or even "attack" the plastic of the pre assembled frame. Those frames sounded like a great idea and progress back when they were announced...

I'll wait till Bandai figures out they made a mistake and just order the high grade Cosmic era version they will most likely make when they realize that the RG was a flop

Firstly, it isn't the full frame it uses, only the legs and given its a kit that spends all its time on an action stand... it makes zero difference. Mecha can be ok as a reviewer, but honestly, he's prone to hyperbolic diarrhea and over states things when it's his personal opinion, not fact. Unless you're reposing models a million times because you treat it as an action figure, real grade frames aren't thar much of a problem outside of a couple of heavier kits that can't tolerate the weight.

They wouldn't have movable arms, legs, head, torso, and feet if they weren't. The legs are a massive part of making the kit feel alive and having them lose their stability and becoming a floppy mess a year or two after you've built it is a failure from Bandai.

Your choice of cancelling the purchase is yours, but have you considered other things before you cancelled it? Because the real problem of this kit was just the thigh joints being really sketchy even for the 2010s standard, while most of all other joints are either brand new or being reinforced with new parts. Some people who already got this kit have successfully fixed the issues by using some HG/30MM swivel hinges, albeit with some cutting, drilling, and thickening involved. My point is, it's okay if you decide to still buy the RG Akatsuki or cancel your purchase, but you should consider other things so that you wouldn't regret your choice 🤷‍♂️

I can understand their decision to go with the MS joint frame from the RG strike so that they can lower the price. Given that this kit adapts the RG Strike frame, this is more for advanced modellers that know how to address those loose joints namely the shoulders and hips based on my experience with previous RG Seed kits. My RG strike still holds thanks to Joint Guards that I bought online. But me rarely posing or playing my kits greatly contribute to the longevity.

This suits looks stunning, they even include a base, the joints are no problem at all when you handle it like a kit not an action figure. I really don't like this terms like ERGS or hand grenade. I know it shouldn't be a thing to do but fixing joints and tighten them up is really, really easy.

The strangest part is that it wasn't out of the realm of possibilities to just revamp the inner frame. We already got the RX-78-2 2.0 and they even modified the Freedom's inner frame for the Shanghai Gundam Base exclusive RG. What happened here looks like it was just a lazy cash grab (especially considering that they made its alternate Striker Pack and the adapters for the Zeus Sillohuette [something that I feel should've come with the kit by default] P-Bandai).

Bandai: Used an Old mold from a 2011 kit to make an expensive new Kit for 2024. Also Bandai: Can make an entirely new mold for Build Fighters and Build Divers series before making their Original Forms with that new mold 2-6 years later. Build Strike (2013),Strike (2014). Jiyan Altron (2018), Altron (2024). LL Heaven (2021), DS Hell (2024).

I kinda wanna just make an EG-HG Akatsuki now. EG strike kitbashed with HG Akatsuki like the one shown in the Zakuaurelius Mook review on EG strike customs. Not plugging but just giving context to what I mean and where you can find it. Video also shows how to make PS Down Strike, Strike Rouge (even if there's official one already) Noir and Akatsuki (as well as Perfect Strike but uses Remaster HG parts iirc given how mook came way before the striker packs got made for EG). Back to point, I kinda prefer the Akatsuki in that video since it's a good shade of gold, not puke or pee gold but orangish yellow shade of gold if that makes sense

As for The HG issues: the nubs were a bitch in a half without some sanders. The gold plastic is thick and softer than the normal matte plastic so the nubs don't snap off like normal and have a tendency to "squish" or "crush". The "wings" connections are very flimsy at the connection points one of mine snapped on very little pressure. The stickers are over used are very bad quality as well. shield color separation via parts and stickers are non-existent. Moving display is nice or a multi source light underneath it that lowers and brightens in intensity automatically.

SEED fans seems to be somewhat neutral on this (not that they don't care of the problems, but get what its referencing). In the lore, the Akatsuki is custom of the Strike that uses the reflectant gold armor to reflect (not deflect) enemy beams.

I think the complaints about the Aesthetics of Akatsuki is kind of unfair. I mean, the point of Akatsuki is precisely because its a Gold Gundam that reflects beams. It is supposed to be shiny and very reflective. Its the excessive gold plating that it has is what it makes it unique, in my opinion. Are there any work arounds or tricks to mitigate the floppy inner frame? I want this kit…but im not willing to go back to the painful flippity floppity days of old. I’ve only built 1 of the early RG kits and it couldn’t even stand after 45 mins of posing.

You can thicken the joints or modify it yourself if you know how, but that’s about it. There might be a third party frame eventually since there is now a market for it.

Yes you can fix it. But you need some modeling skills/techniques to do it.

paint the joint with thin layer of colour without poping out the ball joint

There are several ways to do it. Like using paint, glue(not super glue) or varnish. Some would even went far and disassemble the joints, thickening it and then reassemble them again. There are also options to cannibalise parts from other kits to replace the joints. The more effort you put , the better it'll be, but it's still rather disappointing that you have to take extra steps to fix it and model kit elitists are still defending it while ridiculing others who want a good kit from straight building. 😔

The old frame parts don't bother me that much, but the ultra shiny gold really does make it lose a ton of detail - unfortunate that that's something integral to the design of the Akatsuki. I wonder how panel lining would fare? Would have to test it on the runners first.

I saw a lot of doom posts/negative reviews of the kit so far so I just want to put some positive thought on it: - since it is chrome plated, you dont have to do panel line on this. Make you save time while building it - the included base will help stabilize the kit a bit, and since you only build them to display, the included base wont be too bad. - Akatsuki and Phenex are the only 2 RG kits that are chrome-plated so do with that information whatever you want

​@@yta5234 Another positive opinion : - The thighs can still be fixed by either thickening the balljoints, or replacing the joints with HG/30MM swivel hinges, but you need to cut the balljoint on the thighs, drill a 3mm hole onto it, thicken the pelvis pegholes to fit 3mm pegs, and adjust the pegs to make it snug-fit.

Joint tightening marker can fix some of its issues, Bandai is aware of the issue, so they included an action base for it to stand. But this kit should be avoided by newcomers since most of them don't have the needed tools (joint tightening marker for example) to fix the issue.

The stickers are easily the worst aspect. You can pose it once and never touch it again or stiffen/replace the joints, but the stickers will always look terrible.

I'm not too surprised the RG ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam is not as good. The fact that Bandai reused some inner frame parts from the RG GAT-X105+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike Gundam is a little disappointing; especially since this similar situation happened before with the RG MSN-06S Sinanju reusing the same Advanced MS Joint used with the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II. What I'm still waiting for is an MG ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam. I'm pretty sure Bandai will announce one sooner or later and they'll probably reuse the MG GAT-X105+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike Gundam [Ver RM] to some degree and that isn't too bad since that MG is actually very very sturdy. Maybe the MG version will include both packs in box kind of like the old 1/100 No Grade kit.

WOW those stickers look truly awful lol, I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't a mustard smear on the shoulder. Well at least you can choose not to use stickers, not so with the other faults of this kit. What a shame, it really does look amazing, the colour separation is great, then it's let down by the old frame and weird corner cutting like the barrel.

Disappointed in the frame but ive dealt with the older frames enough that im used to it by now. However looks as amazing as i hoped it would blows the HG out of the water so despite my gripes about the old frame im excited for mine, might wait to build it with the chinese metal frame that's coming.

Strike, most likely. Probably not the Impulse since it's Silhouettes hook up using two pegs on the sides of the pack rather than one singular one in the middle (likely designed that way due to the Core Splendor).
