Definitely want to see the next start of the process I’ve been mixing wrong for years not staging correctly to transition to the mix so it’s muddy and over surgical with compression and squashing sound thanks for the knowledge as always

-12 dB is what they say on vocals but I like the fact that you told them to keep the Beat from clipping because people think louder is better nowadays

I just bought the Klanghelm VUMT last night & I love it!!! I bought the cheaper version. I set the default to -16dB, so when the needle hits 0, it's actually -16. You can set it to any value you want. I would recommend that VU meter to everyone. It's about $24, so it's not that expensive. It's better than the free meters that I've used, so I think it's worth it. I put it on EVERY TRACK (BEFORE compression, EQ, saturtion, etc) to gain stage, and control the volume right from the plugin. Later when you're adjusting the volumes, you just use the faders from each track. In other words, set the meter on all tracks to a nice level, where they are all hitting your setpoint, and never touch the meter after that. Also remember, if the meter is going over 0 on one or two tracks, like maybe +5 dB, it's still just 5dB over your setpoint, so some things can be left like that. You don't have to turn EVERYTHING down to your exact setpoint. The meter I just recommended actually tells you EXACTLY where it's hitting, even if the needle is slamming completely to the right.

In pro tools if you highlight the section and then hold shift+cntrl and use the scroll wheel on your mouse it will adjust the gain as well. This also works for multiple sections selected as well . Just thought I’d throw that out there .

This was very helpful! Can you a video like this one but with Logic Pro? Visually seeing how to properly gain stage In Logic would help a lot. I know how to for them most part but mess something up in the process. My songs don’t sound full or loud enough at times. This video has helped me understand it but as far as the settings in Logic not 100% sure what settings to set up to make sure it’s gain staged. The vu meter helps a lot too but the right process is the issue I would say in Logic.

So the correct input gain for recording is between -8 and -12. I’m sure that when recording at home, I need to push it higher to get the same clarity / crispness that your ears hear in the room. Am I doing something wrong? I’m using an SM57 on a speaker into a focus rite ISA One preamp.
@kensmechanicalaffair Жыл бұрын
Industry standard is 18 average(peak meter) You have to turn it up with a headphone amp or something else. It's a bit of a headache honestly.
@joshjenkinson1929 Жыл бұрын
I realised what the problem was. My monitoring headphones. Shure SE 425. You’d think they’d be good considering the price, but you just can’t rely on them for accurate reference sound. A lot of higher frequency information and low end missing with them.
@via_negativa61838 ай бұрын
This sounds a bit hot to me, most engineers say peaks at -12 maybe it's fine of you are just going spoken or hip hop vocals dunno... I guess as long as you arent clipping the signal and have a bit of headroom.left over it's fine.

My “c’s” are always loud/harsh when I record, anyway to fix this. P’s and most other sibilances are ok but the c’s stand out
@MyAudioAcademy2 жыл бұрын
Experiment with a DeEsser plugin after you record 🔑 Adjust the frequency setting to where you're hearing that harsh sound, then use the threshold to make it less "harsh". Another option is to tilt the mic at a 45 degree angle to prevent the sibilant sound. Hope this helps!

When mixing the vocals do I check the VU meters between each plugin I apply? Like do I gain stage with each individual plugin? I think you might have covered that already but just to make sure. It's something I always wonder about
@legacyShredder12 жыл бұрын
All of your plugins should have an output DB meter and a fader. Make sure to keep your level the same going out as you did coming in.
@n-fotrnd11502 жыл бұрын
@@legacyShredder1 so pretty much get everything leveled out before processing then as your mixing make sure the same level stays the same as it came in so if my lead vocal started at -10 it should be -10 at the end to ?
@legacyShredder12 жыл бұрын
@@n-fotrnd1150 Yes, for all of your main treatments and processing. The DB it goes into a plugin with should be the same DB it exits the plugin. If it's an EQ, vocal effect, or multiple compressors, keep it the same DB. At the very end you will want to automate your volume/fader levels for every track to give your music life and movement. That comes after the main processing. If you don't know about automating your tracks do a quick youtube search on it. Produce Like A Pro is one of the best on these subjects.
@legacyShredder12 жыл бұрын
@@n-fotrnd1150 Here is an example: When you run vocals into a compressor it's going to change the level, because that's what compressors do. They squash levels. Depending on your compressor settings your volume is going to go Up or Down. So use the make up gain (Output DB Fader) on the plugin to make the volume the same as it was coming into the compressor.
@legacyShredder12 жыл бұрын
@@n-fotrnd1150 Plugins don't work right with too much volume. It fucks up the entire sound giving crazy harmonics that ruin the track. If you keep it from -8 to -18 the plugin will work right.
