the Great Great Grandson part was pretty interesting. from a time-distance perspective. In a way the way today we look at the American Civil War Caesar, and Pompeii would be looking at Hannibal and the second punic war. And in a time-distance way the way we look at the American Revolution, Caesar would be seeing the Pyrrhic wars and the wars with the Latins/Celts etc. Altho to be fair the way most people look at those events is a big blur a long time ago.

A sad story. Probably pretty representative of most Roman political careers.

Once i've learnt about Plato's (it's also well discussed in Polybius or maybe other historians/philosophers? i cant remember that for sure sry ok?) view about political structures (democracy-ohlocracy, aristocracty-oligarchy, monarchy-tyranny) i realised that in fact every government sucks. Republican Rome sucked in a different way that imperial did, so seeing such opportunists like this Gaius doesnt wonder me much ... well i actually forgot what i was heading to so yeah ... atleast Regulus failed, since his flimsy adventures are off-limit to the Senatorial Rome ... yeah ... but there wont be any Ceasar the Bulgarslayer in Republican Rome
