Steve Vai said of Brian May ""I can listen to any player and pantomime their sound, but I can't do Brian May. He's just walking on higher ground."
@frontier_fancier8 жыл бұрын
Well there's a couple main reasons he can't do Brian May: he plays with a coin, which has a profound effect on his tone. He also plays with a guitar that he crafted himself. Even the Red Special copies aren't exactly like his. Lastly, he uses three Vox AC30's which have been heavily modified to Brian's personal preferences. So it's no wonder Steve Vai can't emulate him, nor can anyone else for that matter. Unless you've got the gear Brian has, you're never gonna sound anywhere close to him...
@eileenj.m.34618 жыл бұрын
It's more than gear.
@ericynot8 жыл бұрын
Eileen J.M., Yes, it is, and I wish I had just 1% of it.
@frontier_fancier8 жыл бұрын
Eileen J.M. Yeah, obviously. As it is with any guitarist. But the difference that Brian May's gear makes to his tone compared to other guitarists is much, MUCH greater. That's why I think that quote from Steve Vai is a little bit ludicrous.
@jack_o._lantern8 жыл бұрын
+Eileen J.M. it's mostly about the gear though. If you have roughly the same gear as a certain guitarist and you study their style long enough, you will be able to sound like them; not exactly, but very close. Brian's rig, however, is so personalized and one-of-a-kind that only Brian can sound like Brian because he's the only one in the world that has that exact gear.

Seem like people forgot what it was all about.. After have been playing guitar for nearly 25 years, and 10 of them on a professional basis, the following words can be said.. You are NEVER gonna change rock with fast scales and schreddin'.. You will in 90% of the cases only hit a dead end and stagnate as a guitar player.. Nearly everybody can learn how to play scales fast, backed up with tons of distortion.. Be a good guitarists never was/never will be about that.. I can play fast, but i envy people like Keith Richards/Brian may/Jimmy page.. masters of the art of building riffs/feeling and sound of the jazz/r'n b influenced pioneer virtuoses from the 70's.. One day when you grow up as a guitar player, you will also understand that!
@Dutch2go11 жыл бұрын
You are biased just as the guy you're commenting on. Rock solos are all about playing with feeling and with emotion, and you can express different feelings/emotions when playing slow or when playing fast, and both are valid rock music styles, and YES, fast scales and shredding solos HAVE changed rock. Listen for example to Michael Schenker's solo in Rock Bottom. Michael S. is, incidentally, really good friends with Brian May...

I will give absolutely everything i have , i had , and will have , if i can just hear Bryan May live till the time i have left to live on that planet.

Brian May is one of the few guitarists on the planet that can play seriously hard rock, then switch to a tune where he plays a guitar like a violin

I,ve always been blown away with Brian's style, sound and his home built guitar that makes him unique. What a performance, what a sound!

He's a truly great rock guitarist, for an astrophysicist. Or maybe I have that backwards. Nevermind - let's just shorten it to "He's truly great."

Mi affascina il suo modo che adotta ,con la sua chitarra! Lui non la suona... l'accarezza! Come fosse una donna,e da lì emergono quei suoni ,che poi aggiunti alla passione per le note, avviene il miracolo della bellezza musicale!

Also, there are great guitar technique players, and there are fantastically musical, soulful lead guitar players who don't necessarily have the greatest technique - Brian has consistently presented an excellent ballance between showy technique and pure emotional musicality.

For me, the best version of Brighton Rock is still the one from Live Killers. Pure artistry! It's shaped like a piece of classical music that would do the likes of Bach proud. Having said that, I've seen Brian work his magical three part guitar harmonies live on stage on three separate occasions; he never disappointed and I was blown away by his musical genius on each occasion.
