Жыл бұрын

Situated 1000 kilometres west of Ecuador in South America, the Galapagos archipelago contains 13 main islands and a hundred or so smaller rocks and reefs.
The region’s wilderness is so pristine and rich in life it altered our entire view of the natural world.
Gigantic tortoises, sea-swimming lizards and cormorants that have evolved to no longer fly, are just some of the bizarre and unique creatures found here. Human influence has been so limited across the islands it allowed one man, Charles Darwin, to study and rethink the laws of Nature.
The Galapagos Islands’ small land birds like finches and mockingbirds proved key to Darwin’s theory of evolution, making the islands one of the most spectacular scientific discoveries in history.

The cormorant lost the ability to fly for the same reason many insects on islands lose flight. Flight on an island can be a liability. If you fly off shore you my never find your way back. The cormorant feeds near shore and flight is not needed. Many other seabirds on the Galapagos feed far from shore and must fly to the feeding grounds.
@yissibiiyte
@yissibiiyte 7 ай бұрын
Flight is extremely energy intensive. If it isn't an absolute necessity, the ability to fly will often be lost. With no predators to need to fly away from, flight was unnecessary and the cormorants lost it to better conserve energy.

@@rickkwitkoski1976 Yes I am sure there are lots of things there we know nothing about. But the aboriginal people there are not too kind to intruders. And there are so many things in the Amazon jungles and waters that you could die from a mosquito bite or wade in a patch of leeches or well... The Galapagos used to take people to see it by boat. They were not supposed to touch anything. Just look. People cannot be told not to touch. They have to. They are programmed to defy authority. Even if it's for their own good. Now they stopped those visits. Only those who are scientists may visit with almost no contact with the species who live there. Letting them be is the way to allow them to live in a world without people. It is good for them.

Here's what Darwin discovered on the islands. If you already know this, you can ignore me: The same animals landed on all the islands, but since the geography of each island is different (some more verdant, some volcanic, some more rocky, etc,) the animals evolved slightly to suit their habitats. The iguanas on the rocky island with little vegetation, for instance, developed a flattened tail and snub nose to eat the algae under the water. The ones on more verdant islands didn't need these adaptations. Thus Darwin derived the principles of natural selection and survival of the fittest. Simply, that was what Darwin discovered: Natural Selection, and Survival of the Fittest. When he used the word "Theory," he meant it in the sense of "theorem," not speculation. If an animal is not suited to the environment, it will either die out or evolve to better suit the environment. I invite discussion. Those who think evolution is a scam need not comment.

Darwin did not create a single thing, although he was a curious scientist willing to find out all that God created. Darwin did not have any Eden he could not even keep himself alive. He is simply a man, as we all are - we can only behold. But God Maker of heaven and earth is worthy to be praised. His glory and greatness fill the earth.

It's true. Darwin did absolutely nothing save for guessing about nature. He was a naturalist and he was not even an atheist. His theory on evolution and natural selection are guesses on nature. Science requires some kind of observation and truthfully Darwin didn't live long enough to prove his theories. The irony is that people attribute so much to him. He didn't make or create anything. He didn't write a song or even write a thesis. He studied plants and the things that are considered natural by nature. In his biography, even Darwin had to concede with certainty, that there existed a higher power.
