Galaxy Resin Coasters - Tutorial, Use resin layers to create a stunning 3D galaxy

Thank you for watching! This was my first video so there are a few things I should have put in.
I waited for each layer to harden before doing the next (the resin is hard in 12 hours, but I usually wait 24 simply because it fits my schedule)
Each color I use is paint or mica powder mixed with clear resin
My biggest challenge is keeping the coaster thin :-)
The glow powder on these was such a small amount compared to the other colors used, I didn't think about adding to the video (sorry!) To see how they look when glowing in the dark go here: pin.it/69mU0WG

Beautiful outcome!! I love working with Resin & Coaster's are such a blast to do! Yours turned out amazing!! 1st time to your channel, & awesome 1st video!! Pro tip > Amazon sells these amazing Silicone Cups. I use them for mixing my Mica's, Paints, Glitters, & Alcohol Inks into the Resin. They also "double" as holder's for my Art Resin Pieces, because they're 100% Silicone! I also use Silicone spoons, & I purchased 3 Silicone "LOLIVEFE" mats that work great for Resin & Acrylic paint spills:) Another Pro tip>> if you lightly hit the back of your tape with heat gun, it will pull off, so much easier. Hi, I do work with a couple different resins, one of the things I learned quickly is the more heat you apply the faster it sets (chemical reaction) if you work in a warm space it sets better and with a glassy surface, if your space is cold it can cause the cure to have divots, waves or dimples. In the video you see I refrain from popping the micro bubbles with the torch until I was working on that particular coaster - that helps, my room was at 65 degrees (until the final clear coat) and if all else fails you can do the gold leaf last and even apply it to cured resin and put another coat on top to seal it in- the gold always looks fabulous regardless

Here in Brazil, if I take the time you took between the 1st and the last piece, certainly a job like this would not be perfect. If it is not a differentiated resin, it can only be the climate. hug

I love your pieces. I think they're all very pretty. I know some people like seeing the whole process but I don't like the longer videos as much. Maybe a mix of full and shorter could be an idea for the future. I'd love to see more of your stuff but I'm not one to watch a 20+ minute video. But that's just my thoughts 😊 Still love your work!

thank you for suggesting this!!! I put a link to my pinterest board in the pinned comment and in the video description. Because the glow powders I used were small amounts the effect isn't startling, but you can see them softly glowing on the coffee table when you turn out the lights - I LOVE IT

I try to use resins that have a heat deflection up to 500 degrees F if it's going to have hot drinks on it. Can I ask what resin you're using, or if these are just ornamental?

Hi, I waited till the resin was hard between each layer (I have a note pinned in the comments of this video that labels each layer) after the 4 the layer, I waited 24 hours before sanding I did a a re-do video of this style galaxy coaster because this was one of my first videos and I didn't do that stellar of a job explaining the process

Is it better to have both a heat gun and butane torch when working with resin? I have a heat gun currently.

Victoria DeMeyer I really need both. The heat gun makes the resin thin out and move, the torch will pop the micro bubbles and also assists in some of the lacing effects. I]the torch doesn’t move the resin - I torch each project every 15 min for an hour after I’m done because the bubbles will keep coming up until the resin hits a certain solidity

Lisa Blasdell the glow powder I mix into clear resin - depending on the color you have to add the powder until it’s the color you want, (the glow powders tend to look diluted) occasionally I’ll put a drop of paint that matches the powder, in the mix so the color pops more

Is there a way to achieve this in a tall mold with a small pour hole? I’m new to resin and everything I see is that only flat open molds can be customized like this.

yobebemama1 it would definitely be a challenge but if you filled your mold half way - let it set, then started the layers you could probably pull it off

From ~ 7:40 to ~8:15 u used a heat gun plus a torch on one piece. Did your resin start to cute? If not, did you use heat resistant resin? Would you recommend less/mid/high viscosity resin to try this?

The resin didn’t start to thicken until I was putting the gold flakes on the last 5, I usually save the gold flakes for last across all the coasters because no matter how thick it gets the flakes will still stick to the top. I use countertop epoxy (link in the video description) it is a mid viscosity- and not industrial. It’s uv and heat resistant and I have about 30 minutes of work time

@@ResinAsYouWish thanks for the Infos. 🌹 When I use a heat gun my resin starts curing and i bought 4,5 kg of that 😕 I need to use low heat or a hairdryer, i guess. Plus, I'm trying to create some of your coasters and i want to gift them to someone, but my resin is only heat resistant up to 55°C. That means, if you put hot drinks on the coaster, the coaster sticks to the glas 😞. I now ordered a transparent heat resistant varnish spray. Gonna try that. Do you know if your heat resistant resin sticks to glasses with hot drinks?

@@sakujo20 Hi, there have been a couple times that that I didn't mix the resin properly and the cure never hardened completely - this would cause the mug or glass to indent the coaster and sometimes stick, otherwise, these coasters are heavy enough that they do not stick to the bottom when done correctly

Not at all- occasionally I have a hard time getting them out of the mold so I use the heat gun on the outside and it helps them pop out easier as well

Beautiful!!! This may be a silly question, but in your final step do you put over the whole coaster or just on the bottom? If you tape the whole coaster, do you put the final layer on top of the tape?

What Brand Resin are you using? What would you recommend for a beginner? Craft resin or casting resin?

when it comes to a functional piece, like coasters, you need the Casting (Epoxy counter top) so the resin will be glassy and resist looking dull after being used. In this video I"m using the brand MiraKleer I like it because it's not as thick as some or as thin as others :-)

How did you get the green and orange glow so vibrant in color?

When you add color to a clear layer it keeps them from getting muddied up by the darker colors. Instead the seem to sit on the dark background and show up better because they grab the light on all sides being suspended in the clear resin. So it’s more a trick of the layers

@@TMHAY86 yes, but only a few drops or it won’t glow, the colors used for vibrancy are the mica and the glow powders worked in don’t make a huge impact of the overall colors - until you turn off the lights (sorry, this was my very first video and I learned a lot on how to go these videos since then)

Luís Cláudio C. da Silva da Silva hi, it isn’t special, it’s an epoxy countertop brand I buy on Amazon it takes 60 minutes for it to thicken to a peanut butter like consistency- and that is pretty slow setting. I also live in Alaska but I don’t think the climate affects it that much

I know that you wait between the Layer allways 24 hours ...but you show 3rd Layer add Color , put than clear of it goes with the heat gun and Flames over it for the bubbles and than you mix the colors with clear Resin ...how long was the time between that ??

Thomas Bauer hi there - except for the base layer (black) each layer is clear resin with color. The little cups are color powder or paint mixed into clear resin. Each layer throughout the entire process I wait for 24 hours. I do that because resin instruction are meant for a thin coat on a countertop - and compared to that -these coasters are thick. The resin is hard at 12 hours and the layers could probably be done every 12 hours but I wait longer because I find if I rush it there will be a slight ripple effect on the top of the final cure - this could also be because I live in a colder climate. (Each type of resin has curing instructions 12 hours to 3 days seem to be standard.) I have found that I must wait 3 days after a coaster is finished to set a heavy object on it or it may leave a slight dent) please let me know if I didn’t answer your question fully 👍

@@ResinAsYouWish maybe i didn't put my question right By time code 4.22 you put clear Resin on the 2 nd Layer ( in your video that was 3 rd Layer add color ) than you comes with the heat gun for the bubbles . By time code 5.22 you show the colors ( white , Gold,Ginger Bloom ) and by time code 6.22 you put them of the clear Resin and the don´t sink in and stay of the clear Resin You wait only the 2 minutes in the video in real time too before you add the color of the clear Resin ??

Thomas Bauer i mix 8oz of clear resin. It takes 4 oz to put the clear in all 6molds. The rest I split into the color cups, I always end up with too much color, but for me that’s easier than having to mix more in the middle of a layer.

I use a dremmel with sandpaper head attachment (really fast) to smooth the edges and across the top. I only sand the bottom if a drip of resin needs to be removed
