Samsung Note 9 is the last great complete „TOOLKIT” phone. What I trully wish , is that Samsung would release (when there will be a big breaktrough in phone computing science bringing the laptop specs to the phone without overheating) to build the ultimate phone that is around the Note 9 size but taller, a bit bulkier/Thicker for more battery and features, and have it be the ultimate tool, that would include the IR blaster and reader for programming, Radio reciever and transmitter, headphone jack with optical audio capability, side Case pins for extended battery case, normal (side or back) but also under screen finger print reader that can be disabled, 2x fully programmable buttons, and a pen with a better capacitor for 10 minutes of 10 clicks/second and 2 buttons that can be read up to 20 meters away (10 meters full signal) true Iris scanner and 24 MP front camera with 8k ultra wide capability, and the ability to use a crop recording with digital stabilizer and 90 degrees view for vlogging that is 4k and a more normal angle , rather then 160 degrees (8k) down to a more resonable 90 degrees (4k), also NO! under screen camera setup, but more like the note 9 form factor, but while also having a full 21/9 aspect ratio screen 4K CAPABLE, but that can go down to 1080p for the best battery life and performance, and having 2x front facing corner ambiental lights, that can be used for reading or for when you need wide ambient lighting, and on the back, an array light that has doual porpuse, wide field ring light (both ambiental close range lights should be able to change the temperature of the light from cold to warm light with ample steps between white and worm orange), with focused center light that can illuminate up to 50m for the 20x zoom lense, and the smaller ring light would be up to 5m for the ultra wide or 2x zoom. Also, it should have dual proper speakers for true mobile stereo, that also have ultrasonic capability, for pet training command use, or for emergency cases that makes an inaudible sound to humans, but the phone itself and rescue units with capable gear, can detect the sound to find the phone's location at least, and maybe also a GPS signal emitter. And call it (THE GALAXY TOOL NOTE 1) that maybe does not have the most powerful hardware, but it is the most versatile version for people that need a tool that is reliable in any temperature or scenario. (And this line of phones should have a new model each 3 years, and have them fully supported for 9, and security supported for 18 years) (Unless at least 50% of these options are in a phone, i will not buy an other one, at least not a samsung.). Sony has the potential of doing what Samsung does not anymore, Innovate. If Sony could find a way, through an UAG case partnership and Wacom pair-up, to have a secure side case pen that works at least as good as the note 9 pen, then it would out-sale Samsung just from the utilitary phone users that prefer the note 9 , and if they include a good pair up with raw HDR pictures and raw editing power, that is seemless and compatible to their amazing mirrorless cameras trough a multi-load and multi access points WI-FI system, then they will also sell the echosystem to photographers/vloggers/filmmakers, and also drive sales to their mirrorless cameras, because even if you have a capable day-day camera on the phone, you can't beat the raw performance of a big sensor with big lense, for the extra special occasions, or for professional users. Maybe even a much better drone that can use mirrorless cameras with an automatic optical zoom lens that can beat out all the integrated camera drones, through the sony echosystem wi-fi setup (bringing joy to the FPV drone users , to be able to do similar stuff, while also being able to gather amazing video and pictures.)

Just wish that manufacturers would make swapping flash storage easier since that'll eventually slow to a crawl with no good way to restore it without buying a new or barely used motherboard.

Like I really care about lots of the new things Android 12 did so I got a Pixel 6 Pro, but if I didn't care for that then I probably would still be running on my old S10+ and maybe considering upgrading. The reason I say "maybe consider upgrading" is just because out of all Android manufacturers, it seems Samsung tends to make phones that get upgrade sickness where upgrading slows down the phone.

@@officialANON001 Nah, Hugh Jeffreys made a really good presentation in which he switches parts between two brand new Iphone 13s. They're basically unrepairable by the owner or even small 3rd party shops. The cameras and the display needs to be reprogrammed to work properly. I recommend you to watch the video, it's quite funny in a sad way.

I wish you had gone into more detail about the cooling hardware. Samsung totally re-engineered the cooling system of this phone utilizing a gel tim, stainless-steel vapor chamber, copper heatpipe, and graphite pads and it wouldve been really cool to see these parts in more detail.

Thank you for highlighting Samsung's obsession with battery adhesive and it's effect on the environment! I own a repair shop and deal with a local electronics recycling company. They hate getting Samsung devices in because of the difficulty of removing the battery compared to other manufacturers. I can't imagine how many end up in a landfill globally because of the this.

Repairability is DEFINITELY an issue, as I had several smartphones and one tablet in a good repairshop near my home several times. A problem with the USB port, screen (3 times) and camera module (1 time) isn't a reason to spend a ton of money for a new device! 😉

@@theneighborlynumismatist8201 In order to see the full implications of what Apple is doing, you'll have to recognize that a person's finances and ability to pay for these ridiculously expensive repairs are a type of exhaustible resource. Charging more money for something that you claim exclusive rights to is much less sustainable than putting too much glue in a phone. If you create a problem and then design your own solution that costs people more money and uses far more resources than allowing simple third party repairs with third party products (while not even making a product that is "more" recyclable), you don't get kudos for that. Samsung's battery is not LESS recyclable as a product. It just less convenient and will require a different removal process. I am in no way saying that I agree with the amount of adhesive Samsung is using (moot point), but I am saying Apple's manufactured solution to the problem the created is worse.

Heads up for those who want to do the SiriusXM trial, you can't cancel your trial unless you call their number. They don't make it easy. I would recommend using a fake debit card for the trial so they don't charge you while you scurry to cancel

I've had similar experiences with XM. They gave me a free trial when I bought my car. Trying to cancel that trial wasn't fun. By the time I was able to get through on the phone (took numerous attempts where I gave up after being on hold for more than 40mins during my work days). By the time I did get through, the trial expired and I was charged. They wouldn't do anything about it. Told them I'd never subscribe again, but they still call me every 3 weeks with offers lol Spotify premium subscription has been the better option for me.

SiriusXM sucks anyway. The music selection is awful, there's loads of commercials (advertising their other stations and their social media account is still a commercial), there's DJs who get on there and say the dumbest things imaginable, and you get dropouts all the time. My parents pay for it and I cannot for the life of me figure out why. It's just as garbage as FM radio except you have to pay for it.

For anyone wanting to replace a battery on their phone; Disconnect the battery, soak the adhesive in a few drops of isopropyl alcohol, get a piece of dental floss and put it under the batteries corner. You can cut through the adhesive with zero bends being done to the battery. Did this on a couple phones but never heard about this technique from anyone. Hope it helps.

since 2017 been using Sony Xperia XZ Premium and only upgraded in 2022 with S 22 ULTRA. Ultimately, they all do the same basics. Tho, xerpia back panel had given off, needed to be reglued and local mobile trademan stated that the "model" was out of fashion, they could not repair, despite, only needing some reheating n adhesive. But this s22 ultra is a nice piece of machine, great replacement for a broken (still functional) phone.

Thanks for the teardown, the s22 ultra looks well built from a packaging stand-point. Wonder how long that charging port o-ring will last though. I'm still sporting my Galaxy S7, if it still had security/software updates I would keep it longer as it still does the job fine. Right now I'm looking to reluctantly upgrade (its been 6 Years).

Isopropyl alcohol is extremely cheap and completely safe to use on electronics. I replaced my battery with a screwdriver, candle, and a couple plastic shims and had an easy time with it.

@@Yielar1 Zack had to put a lot of force on the battery with his metal pry tools and he slightly bend the battery upon removing. This is dangerous because this can cause the battery to malfunction, catch on fire or explode!

@@realracer0353 he also had to spend 5 minutes heating up the back glass and use a razor blade to cut the glue. Either of those things could also make the battery catch fire. What I'm getting at is that if recycling companies can find a way to get the back glass off easily, they can surely find a way to get the battery out easily. Especially when most pull tabs don't work most of the time. I think not buying a phone because it doesn't have battery pull tabs is stupid, considering how hard it is to get to the battery in the first place and that most of them will never be recycled.

Repairability and recycling are so-so on the scale for me. I'd love to keep my S22 Ultra forever, but if, for whatever reason, it can't be repaired, then I won't cry about it. And for recycling, while important, I think that not buying a phone simply because the battery removal isn't easy or 100% guaranteed is a very inefficient reason, but to each their own.

I " upgraded " to the s22 Ultra 512gb model from my s10+ this year and I use the word " upgrade " very loosely. Personally I think the s10+ was peak Samsung, best phone I had ever used hands down. Unfortunately, I'm not liking the s22U as much. It's bigger and the display is less worn out, sure. But the phone itself has bad thermal issues that constantly causes throttling, battery life sucks, speakers don't sound as good, and it's missing alot of features I've come to be used to over the past 3 years. They're also not including pre-installed screen protectors anymore which is a must on these phones since nothing works right on the aftermarket. Either they can't adhere to the curved edges good or the fingerprint scanner has a ton of issues. And that's ontop of everything else Samsung has de-contented in the past 3 years. Still haven't recieved a day 1 patch yet either and I've had the phone since the 23rd - 2 weeks ago. Idk, it's a nice phone if it's your first Samsung, but tbh the s10+ was better. If that phone could have lasted another 5+ years I would have just kept it. Idk, at this point I just think we're hitting the law of diminishing returns on these phones - Apple included. And esp for the price we should be getting a whole lot more.

At this point there is nothing more for the phones to offer other than better battery life. They can run every game and app you would want to play on a phone, shoot cinema quality movies, take award winning photos and have high end gaming monitor screen resolution. Not to mention being waterproof, 5g and wireless charging. Phones have reached their potential and now companies need to start making them cheaper

I did the same exact thing you did. There are a few improvements/new features. My s10plus battery waa going downhill pretty fast. Right now, I can go a full day without charging unless I'm gaming. To think, instead of the s-pen, could of had an aux port. Downsides are, having to buy a new adapter. I feel like if they up the charging rate, they should include it in the box! Also, this phone ran very hot, like burning fingertips hot. But apparently thr new software is learning your usage to adjust performance.

@CockOfJustice as a curved screen owner I can say that (S20U) I love it. S20U's curved screen is subtler than older models but the usability and the comfort and look ratio is amazing. There are proper glass screen protectors that work really well without fingerprint scanner issues. Since the corners have smaller curves as long as its good quality, glass screen protectors do stay on without a problem.

@CockOfJustice I've had curved displays since my s10+ in 2019 and I love them. But you are correct they're a pain in the ass to find a good screen protector. That's why I'm upset samsung stopped including a pre installed protector on the s22U bc 99% of the aftermarket ones suck. But the curved display itself is great and honestly I can't see myself going back to flat glass.

Hey Jerry, I was wondering what happens to the devices after they become obsolete as a result of teardowns? From the point of e-waste and sustainability? I was always watching these videos and find them interesting, but now I started to wonder whether there is any EoL management for these devices from the manufacturer at least, do they take it back for recycling or they don't care?

I bought one of these after my old S7 committed sudoku. After seeing your videos on it I'm pretty happy with the components. This looks like quality. When it dies I can just take it apart and send the battery off for recycling myself. Thanks for all the info. Sure is handy without having to experience it first hand.

Wasn't apple counterproductive by locking down each component so repairability is a major hurdle? Well, for third parties, hopefully not themselves. I think there might be other also ecologically good ones, e.g. Fairphone.

I got my Note 10+ the same time as you and have been rocking it ever since (am also considering an iPhone for my next whip 🤢) but it recently fell off my motorcycle at 50mph and my case isnt even that good and the phone is completely fine minus one tiny ding on the frame. I'm shocked and I'm not sure what other device could do that in our current climate. I probably just got lucky but still.

Repair and recycling is one of the key pillars of my smartphone experience. I hold dear the concept of sustainability, and options with sustainability definitely adds huge points to the decision. Key factors when buying phones:- 1. Durability 2. Day-to-day usability (overall software experience, size and weight) 3. Repairability 4. End-of-life 5. How good are the telephotos (I'm a lazy guy, I read the menus from far when I'm in queue or at my table for lunch/dinner)

4:16 I would have liked to have seen you remove that mesh screen over the microphone hole. I'm one of the idiots who initially inserted the sim ejector pin into the wrong hole in my Galaxy S21, and another youtuber showed in his teardown that nothing happens, but what he didn't do was remove that mesh to really get a good look behind that screen. You’re risking the phone to fry the motherboard by getting any water inside the pen hole, so it’s not a very good idea to add any kind of metal inside of the pen hole. Charging the pen wirelessly is the best option if you want to keep the water out of the phone.

The s pen doesn't have a battery but a small capacitor that only works for a very short time. Older models didn't have capacitors at all. The pen charges while using it through an electromagnetic field spread across the screen.

The implementation of the contacts on the phone and the pen might not be reliable enough for repeated use. Plus sweat and dirty may cause poor contact resistance reducing long-term reliability.

Am I the only one that thinks that his reason for not choosing a Samsung for his next phone is a little stupid? Samsung won't stop doing this just because a random guy in another country told them to, and you not buying another phone from them doesn't matter when you already buy one every year. He does have a point, and recycling is very important, I just think it's dumb as hell to prioritize this instead of software, hardware, or ecosystem, just get whatever phone you want instead of making others feel guilty about what phone they buy, that may sound dumb, but trust me there is at least a couple of people right now that feel guilty that they bought a Samsung phone because he said this stuff. Also, you have one of the biggest phone collections of all time, what makes you think that using your old phone instead of the 100s that you have lying around will in any way help the planet? Now that I think about it, all the phones you bought probably produced so much e-waste that you might have one of the biggest 3-waste footprints that isn't from a company.

Agreed that it's better for the environment to wait getting a new phone. Upgraded from the Galaxy Note 10 +. One of the reasons I chose the Galaxy S22 Ultra is that parts of it is made from fishing nets. Makes up for all that glue in the battery 😂🤣

I repaired smartphones for years as a LEVEL 2 device repair technician at Batteries + ( lol ) & lots & lots of Apple & Samsung phones // usually 3-15 phones per shift / + selling light bulbs (LED) & installing car batteries etc // at any rate // my first smartphone was a Galaxy Note 2 then I went to an OG iPhone SE & now I roll an iPhone SE2 - I got an Apple Watch Series 1 (still works) desk ornament, Apple Watch Series 5 (now Meg uses that one) & most recently Apple Watch SE (my daily. We both have 2019 iMac's & iPod touch 4th gen that still work & an ancient iPad 2 that still works. My 2008 MacBook still works too. Apple hardware very long lasting - for many people. I really like how iPhones are made & appreciate Samsung phones too // & appreciate that Apple makes the battery easy to replace (since its probably the first thing to fail, especially since going to 100% charge damages LIPO, as does high heat & or charging while below freezing (keeping LiPO between 30-80% makes last 5X longer (your working with 50% of the charge & minimizing anode & cathode ion insertion & removal extremes associated with charge state below 5% & above 95% / this applies to most of the lithium cobalt carbon lipo batteries used in consumer electronics that are portable // laptops, smartphones, smartwatches, fitness trackers // so I recommend short charge sessions of 10-40 minutes in the morning or while taking a shower, while going for a walk, while eating breakfast or lunch or dinner, & strongly advice people to avoid the fire risk of leaving their portable electronics with LIPO batteries parked on a charger all night while they are sleeping (overcharging & progressively damaging the battery) - Kudos to Batteries + & iFixIt for helping people to replace their faded electronic device batteries & for selling the tools & giving away the know how & instructions online for free - like many KZbin channels. Love your channel Zach!
