A highly unsung performer....vividly remember her from " The Letter" 1940, and " Anna and The King" 1946...so unfortunate for her and her husband regarding the " blacklist"

Fascinating interview with Gale Sondergaard. I'll never forget her performance in "The Letter." What a story!

I'm here because of her in the Abbott & Costello ghost comedy "The Time of Their Lives (1946)". She was great in it - a lot of gravitas.

This interview is extraordinary. She was always known as a great actress. But she proves to be a great interviewee as well. It's a shame she didn't do more. A great fearless woman.

What an absolute joy to listen to this wonderful actress. How intelligent and interesting talking about her career.. very classy and still beautiful. Interviews are no longer conducted in this manner sadly. It’s all Flash & Trash now. Thank you for downloading and sharing this video.

Brilliant woman, and actress. Her villains always were elegant, charismatic, dripping with charm, intellect, and venom. Every bit the equal of the men in her films, and ahead of her time. Watching Gale Sandergaard play the villain was always a delight. No one threw shade quite like her. And her performance as the heartbroken, vengeful widow in The Letter? A masterclass in acting, without big exposition. Well done, Ms. Sondergaard.

One of the things I truly respected about Dick was his seeking out guests who ordinarily wouldn't be found on the talk show circuit, and interesting, accomplished people, like Gale Sondergaard here, a brilliant actress and a longtime favorite of film fans.

Mr. Eichler, thank you for this! I am the age now that Gale Sondergaard was then and have enjoyed (and am enjoying) many of the movies she was in. I would have no idea how articulate, intelligent, ladylike, beautiful (on and on) she was away from the movie screen if you had not posted this. Again, thank you!

I love seeing her with some wrinkles and creases, yet still elegant and attractive (at 80!) Too many of today's women freeze their faces into a taut, immobile mask and wind up looking like plastic, phony, waxen figures. She has so much expression and interest going on with her face. Intellectual person.

Fascinating woman of great intellect and incredible acting skills. The social issues she talks about are just as much a problem now as they were then.I liked her in The Time of their Lives, with Lou Costello.

Trivia: Gale almost played "The Wicked Witch of the West". Hers would have been a more glamorous version, but when MGM wanted to make the character less attractive, she backed out, being sensitive about her looks. Too see how she might have appeared in "Oz", her makeup in the Shirley Temple film, "The Blue Bird", will give you an idea of what might have been. I wonder if Dick reads these KZbin comments about his show. Dick, if so, please respond with a quick "hi"!

My first seeing of this woman is from the spider woman. So beautiful and seductive, looking at her here as an aged woman, I have a message for everyone reading this; enjoy your youth and do great things for when you get old and your beauty and strength has faded, there only remains great memories or great regret.

There are stills of her as both the beautiful snd ugly witch in Wizard of Oz. She was right to refuse the role. The film industry suffered for losing her for 20 years due to the blacklist

Sondergaard was born in Litchfield, Minnesota, to Danish immigrants, Hans Sondergaard (born Hans Tjellesen Schmidt Søndergaard) and Anna Kirstine Søndergaard (née Holm). Her father taught at the University of Minnesota, where she was a drama student. Following several strokes, Sondergaard died from cerebral vascular thrombosis in the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California in 1985, aged 86. She had been admitted to the hospital in 1982.
