Galen understood so well the method of difference, exemplified by his astounding proof that the brain controls movement. And yet he was so far from modern science that he explicitly (and ad nauseam) mocked atomic and molecular theories of bodily processes. He attributed everything to an attractive force, which he admitted not understanding, but thought more evident from the phenomena than atomic and molecular theories. The greatest lesson Galen can teach us today is therefore negative: Never hang your hat on the (bare) phenomena. Great mini-lecture
