Galfer Front Wave Rotor Installation on a 15-17 Yamaha YZF-R3
www.sportbiketrackgear.com/ga...
Replacing the front brake rotor with the Galfer Yamaha R3 Front Wave Rotor really added to the look of the STG Project R3. Not only does it look better but it adds some performance benefits as well. When we installed the front rotor we also replaced the front pads with the Galfer HH Sintered Front Pads which were a nice upgrade from the stock brake pads. Bedding in the new rotor and pads was pretty easy, it took about 30 miles in total with the brakes literally improving with each application. Proper break in is critical to overall performance and longevity. End of the day this is a nice little mod for the R3 that looks great and improves the performance a bit.
If you feel uncomfortable with this modification please take your bike to a licensed motorcycle mechanic. Stay tuned for more installation videos!

Can you follow up with a quick review of how the rotors and pads met the marks, and would you recommend them for street use? I have two R3's, and was considering the steel braided brake lines to improve stopping feel.

Sure, everything worked very very well. I don't usually ride aggressive on the street but it significantly improved my overall breaking consistency in all weather. Really great setup!

@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear Ай бұрын
You can install larger rotors on some models, the R3 is not one of them. IMO you can get all the braking power you need on this bike by upgrading the pads, lines and rotor. In MotoAmerica the JC racers are using stock master cylinders on the R3 and Ninja 400 with excellent results. - Van

How would you bed in discs on a track only bike?
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 4 жыл бұрын
I start in the paddock with slow speed stops and finish on the track with a slow session. Do not put yourself into a situation where you need to break hard. Break smooth and early for every corner. You will feel the brakes improve with each use until they are ready to go. This process will only require part of one session to complete. - Van

+Rookie Rider J That will depend on if there is a sensor ring attached to the rear rotor or if the Galfer rear rotor will accept the stock sensor ring if it is removable. For now the application chart only says this will fit the US version. - Van

You have only put 300 miles on that bike in, what, the last 5 months? It very much seems to me like a waste of time and money to change the brake disks on a bike that barely gets ridden. Anyway, well done video, very informative.

Whats your reason not to use a torque wrench?
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 5 жыл бұрын
Before starting STG I was an auto technician at a Cadillac dealer for many years. Over those years I developed really good feel for torque and would only use a torque wrench for a few select jobs. If you are not comfortable working without using a torque wrench I would encourage you to get one for sure. - Van

Great question. They look better (never a bad thing) and the overall performance of the brakes will improve a bit as compared to stock. Not a massive jump in braking power as you would see with installing a brake line kit. - Brian Van

Excuse me sir. I planing on buying R3 but I wonder what is the maximum size of wheel on tired that I can put on R3 ? front and rear wheel. Do I need to adjust the swing arm ? What if I would like to put the wheel and tired around Front 160 and Rear 180 do you think is possible and safe to ride. Thx a lot sir.

They use retaining pins for safety. Do you know what else is for safety? A torque spec. That's just plain sense and cheap insurance. I like the product but you are actively telling people the wrong way to do this. "At the end of the day" torque matters.
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 6 жыл бұрын
If you do not have a good feel for even and appropriate torque then you should use a torque wrench as stated. I have installed brake rotors on bikes 100 times over the years with zero issues. Everything I share is based on personal experience backed by actual results. As I said if you are not comfortable then go buy a torque wrench and use it. - Brian Van

I've never met Van, but based on the videos I've watched, he likely has more mechanical experience than all of the viewers of this video combined. He even suggests using a torque wrench in the video. I have a decent bit of mechanical know-how, sometimes I use a torque wrench, sometimes I don't. If you're concerned about safety, I'd reevaluate the video on your channel that shows you explaining how to remove the orange tip from a CO2 gun- that orange tip seems like it's there for safety, after all. :)
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 6 жыл бұрын
I am certainly no expert when it comes to firearms so this may be incorrect. Don't they put the orange tip on toy guys to clearly identify it as such to prevent unnecessary or accidental shootings? I don't use a torque wrench or wear safety glasses but I wouldn't do that. The internet is an amazing machine. - Brian Van
