Very interesting! In the public schools, I've heard teachers time and time again, defend "poor" Galileo who fought against the "mean ignorant" church.

My understanding also is that prior to writing the book, Galileo wanted to use the authority of the Pope to rule dogmatically about Heliocentrism, but got a lot of pushback because that was outside the authority of what the Pope could do.

It was outside the pope authority because magisterium were devoted to the Ptolemaic model and pope didn’t want to anger the magisterium.

The fact that Galileo's broad strokes claim turned out to be right in hindsight doesn't mean the arguments he made for it at the time were right. Nor does it mean he had sufficient evidence to back his claim at the time.

Stephen Hawking (2010): “So which is real, the Ptolemaic or Copernican system? Although it is not uncommon for people to say that Copernicus proved Ptolemy wrong, that is not true....one can use either picture as a model of the universe, for our observations of the heavens can be explained by assuming either the earth or the sun to be at rest" (The Grand Design, p.41). Albert Einstein (1938): “The struggle, so violent in the early days of science, between the views of Ptolemy and Copernicus would then be quite meaningless. Either coordinate system could be used with equal justification. The two sentences: ‘the sun is at rest and the Earth moves,’ or ‘the sun moves and the Earth is at rest,’ would simply mean two different conventions concerning two different coordinate systems" (The Evolution of Physics: From Early Concepts to Relativity and Quanta, p.212).

The suns gravitational pull on the earth is far greater than the earths gravitational pull on the sun. No matter the developments of general relativity, that fact remains the same. The sun is pulling the earth around it due to its gravitational force , not the other way around. If the sun is going around the earth, then what is pulling it around the earth? The earths extremely weak gravitational pull?

@@billyg898 This is the way Newton understood the forces acting upon the earth: he assumed that only those forces found inside our solar system could act upon the earth. Einstein realized that this was a 'defect' in Newton's system, because Newton had simply assumed this 'fact' without actual evidence. In contrast, Einstein found that other forces outside our solar system could actually act upon the earth, and, accordingly, concluded: "...whereby K’ [the Earth] is treated as being at rest. If Newtonian mechanics disallow such a view, then this could very well be the foundation for the defects of that theory" ("Physikalische Zeitschrift", 1918). Physicist Denis Sciama explains: "Whether the Earth rotates once a day from west to east, as Copernicus taught, or the heavens revolve once a day from east to west, as his predecessors believed, the observable phenomena will be exactly the same. This shows a defect in Newtonian dynamics, since an empirical science ought not to contain a metaphysical assumption, which can never be proved or disproved by observation." The truth is that the earth could easily remain at rest if all the forces that acted upon it from all around the universe 'cancelled themselves out.' The center of mass in a system could very well be a small object, if all the other forces of the system balance themselves out in this one point. This center of mass would be similar to a door's hinge, around which the door (a heavier object) rotates.

You forgot this one: “Tell me," [Ludwig] Wittgenstein asked a friend, "why do people always say, it was natural for man to assume that the sun went round the earth rather than that the earth was rotating?" His friend replied, "Well, obviously because it just looks as though the Sun is going round the Earth." Wittgenstein replied, "Well, what would it have looked like if it had looked as though the Earth was rotating?”

Much needed explanation of this very misunderstood historical event. The devil is in the details, as they say. While the history of the Catholic church has much we wish never happened, this event is so frequently misportrayed. Thank you for the more balanced account.

Galileo erroneously used tides as a proof for his position. Keep in mind the incident took place in background of the counter reformation. The Catholic Church was was being hammered by Reformers who were literalist concerning the Bible . A prominent Catholic like Galileo presumingly just made it more difficult for Catholic’s . The Church historical does not or never did interpret the Bible as literalist. Cardinal Bellemine told the scientist thst if he could come back with proof the Church would address at that time . The whole argument about that passage is ridicules. Even today everyone including scientists say sunrise and sunset Because that’s are observation . The Bible is just recording what people saw regardless of the Physics

Really, why does everyone make this so complicated? The protestant reformation was started by a disgruntled former employee of the Catholic church. He wanted to do away with the need for the clergy. Only faith in Jesus and the Bible. No need for Sacraments or priests. End of story. Oh, and king henry the 8th wanted to get divorced a bunch of times.

However you sugar coat ti, this is just one in a long history of the Christian Church (Catholic or otherwise) of attempting to silence or undermine scientific theory (In the correct use of the term) that undermined the apparent statements of Scripture. We have the same going on right now with the Theory of Evolution (which stands up to all the tests of science) and also that moral idea that gay people are not sinners and should not be denied the rights of other people. Religious dogma is the enemy of truth, not its protector.
