Galileo's Quote Doesn't Work on Christians

I've heard atheists use the Galileo quote "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same god who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use" as an argument, or part of an argument, against Christianity (and religion in general). In this video I explain three reasons why I don't think this fazes Christians at all.

Phenomenal video! Been considering starting a channel myself lately because I would want to make videos in this fair, measured, and respectful manner as well. I actually would not have thought of the first two counter-argument, but they make sense. I feel like reviewing the multiple perspectives one side could take (rather than the strongest argument from the one of them) can help open the perspectives of people from both sides of the argument. One of the virtues a Christian is aiming to master is being humble. One of the opposites to that is self-confidence and narcissism, both of which are easy to fall prey to focusing by believing just a bit too much in the power of one’s intellect. History demonstrates over and over again the foolishness of once sound intellectual concepts. A wise man will take his intellectual conclusions lightly and humbly. According to Christian faith, freewill is a gift from God. It appears to be necessary to limit human intellect just so that it would be impossible to prove conclusively the existence of God, as otherwise the exercise of free will becomes challenging. There are many interesting concepts in Theology proposed by the “holy fathers” - Orthodox monks who have achieved a high spiritual level. If this topic interests you, I encourage you to study some of their materials, but it’s advisable to receive a blessing from a priest or a high monk from an Orthodox Church first (they might also point you to the books that might be of interest specifically to you)

Naturalism can mean a few things, so it probably depends on how exactly you mean it. But generally speaking, yeah I'd say I'm a naturalist (in the sense of there being no non-physical or supernatural world). Of course I'm also an empiricist, so I go with the evidence. There is no evidence of a spiritual world so I don't believe in it. If there was evidence for a spiritual world then I would believe in it. But I would hazard a guess that such a thing does not exist and that even if there are such things as higher realities (like if we exist within a simulation or a dream or if there was an afterlife or something) that they're still made up of matter. Why do you ask?

The problem with pitting intellect against God is that if we define God as the ultimate reality, intellect is only valid insofar as there is an ultimate reality that is intelligible. So to say there is no God is to say there is no ultimate reality and to therefore undermine reason and intellect itself. Therefore, if we follow the nature of intellect and reason to its logical conclusion that there is an ultimate reality that is intelligible, then we have to conclude both atheism and polytheism are never true and incapable of being true. Because to claim anything to be be true is an appeal to an ultimate reality and therefore an appeal to God. As such, atheism can only be defined by what it is not, because in rejecting an ultimate reality, it ultimately has no substance or any truth to be found.

What you've done here is beg the question, because you've begun with your conclusion rather than end with it. If you define god as the ultimate reality and you tie intellect to it, then sure, intellect wouldn't make any sense without a god. But why would we assume that this right here is not the ultimate reality? What reason do we have to assume that there is a reality beyond this one?

Whatever Galileo's remark has on Christians, he turned out to be right. The RCC was so self obsessed with its power that it took over 300 years for it to admit that Galileo was correct in his heliocentric model. Even then grudgingly, and under the German Pope even an attempt to downplay where the RCC went wrong. The way to persuade religious people away from their faulty beliefs ? Let them get bored with them, and show the available delights of living a whole life, - not on your knees. Responsible sex before marriage ? Yes please !
