My friend and I grew up riding together and had several horses. We both trained and rode for years, we were very experienced riders. She was riding a horse she sold to a friend to help her out one day, the horse tripped in the arena and fell. My friend was thrown into the ground on her head. She had to be air lifted to a trauma hospital where it was confirmed she had suffered a traumatic brain injury. Thank God after a year in the hospital and many more in recovery, shes able to do most everything. She can’t ride anymore but she takes care of all her own needs and is doing well considering. She was not wearing a helmet. A helmet is like a safety belt in a car, it may not save you from everything but you stand a better chance at staying safe when you wear one. I’m glad you made the decision to wear yours. Hope you had a blast.

So sorry to hear about your friend, I also grew up around horses, my first horse was a painted Shetland she was a pistol. I was 9 years old. When I finally out grew her my dad got me a morgan & quarter horse. I rode her alot. Me & my brother who also a horse would go to the pond & jump off their butt's, swim in between their legs. Them was the good times. When I finally moved out of my parents house my dad sold her. He told me she had twins.

@@rachelspellman5511 Yes, I thought of Yvonne as well. Very, very sad when this happens. I used to volunteer for disabled riding and many were from horse accidents (jockeys). They got back into the saddle, with help and a slow walk. If your friend is still open to horses, that might be a possibility for her to at least enjoy being around them. Everyone is different, of course.

I've had two Arabians in my life, and both were such Awesome trail horses. Dancer, Shamus and I were great partners. I miss them sorely. With fibromyalgia and at 73, I'm afraid my trail riding days are behind me. But I have wonderful memories of my boys. They started out wanting go places, and came back the same way. Both were very intelligent, and very easily trained. Both were stallions around 4 yrs of age, at purchase, and because I didn't have a place to keep a stallion I had to have both gelded. Neither were broke when I got them. Shamus had had a saddle on for about a week, before I picked him up. Both were very smart and easily picked up anything you asked of them. I miss them.😔💙

I'd grown up with quarter horses, crosses of Morgan /Quarter horse, Thoroughbred/ Quarter horse, Appaloosa with Quarter breeding, Fox Trotter, Saddle bred horses, plus a couple of rank ponies. I loved the spirit and agility of my Arabs. They made riding a real adventure, and really fun and exciting all in a good way. They were sensible and gave their all. They too were fast and quick, jumping tree logs, crossing streams, climbing up steep hills, and going down easy on the other side. They were my buddies. All in for whatever came our way. Sorry I get carried away remembering our times together. ❤

I started riding again 69. I'm still having trouble getting on and off gracefully. The hips just don't open as wide as they used to but I stretch them all the time and I go to a physiotherapist and once I'm on, watch out.

The issue is you have to decide what you want to really do. If you want to compete or do you want to rehab and use that horse to compete. Because the chances of a rehab working out to be successful for long term competition is nil to non. Yes it can happen but the reason many, not all, are being found after being sold and finding itself being sold to whoever, whatever including slaughter is the horse doesn’t have the conformation to stay sound under competition. There are just too many horses that are bred without looking at this. Some horses just shouldn’t be bred, they are bred like dogs because I have a female, they have a male and they think they can sell the puppies for $500-600 apiece. That’s so sad. I almost believe we should go to the European method of breeding where the horses have to undergo conformation assessments from weaning until able to be bred. And if at some point, they don’t pass then they can’t be bred. They can be bred but can’t be registered under the particular breed. Stallions can’t be fully assessed for breeding as they go along due to their offspring not being highly rated. Mares the same. It’s not just a who is the prettiest for the sake of pretty, its conformation based. There is more than just this. But I just don’t think you should be able to breed whatever you want and throw all these bad conformation horses out there that fail early and end up being throw always. It’s sad to me but we live in a country where it’s more what I want to do, more than what I should do. I see everywhere in all breeds including my favorites - and you see in young horses - low backs, thin chests, straight shoulders which equals to straight hips and legs ie in the stifle area. Legs which toed out and toed in, cow hocks. Necks which too short, not set on properly, ewe-necked. Or horses whose front end doesn’t match its backend ie it’s not balanced. These conformation traits can drastically the ability for a horse to standup under competition and general use. It’s why so many Arabians and saddlebreds my favorite breeds personality and drive end wise end up at the slaughter yard. Same for thoroughbreds. In thoroughbreds, they just breed thousands of them hoping to come across the oddball that is fast and can make it to the three year old year. Quarter horses are the same, thousands were bred and the farms sold them off to the slaughterhouses that use to be here and run by the foreigners until they were pushed out. Now depending on where you are located - all those quarter horses go to Mexico for slaughter, and those on the east coast go to Canada. After that if it has a lot of speed and its bloodlines are strong - but can’t standup to racing and falls apart, it goes to the broodmare ban. Stallions end up in the stallion barn if it wins a lot of money ie it’s won a lot of 2/3 yr old races. But many don’t have the conformation to make it to the big stud barns. But the ones that don’t, well for decades went to the slaughterhouse. I mean if they have been gelded and they breakdown, what chance do they have. Not much unless rescued to be used at lower level competition or just around the farm and trail riding. The occasional few make it to higher levels but with lots of work, meds, layoffs, etc. There aren’t as many Arabians or thoroughbreds who race long term as use to. Even as rescued and do well for a few years, but they become too expensive to keep up and as people’s skills improve, they are resold because they just aren’t good for anything to justify early prices because they keep getting sore backs, sore feet, they can’t collect themselves to properly get over jumps, competitive trail riding, etc. And their conformation isn’t good enough, even if they can decently get over fences, when they have to model - they lose there big time. And the quarter horses, it’s the same thing except they have to be able to pole bend, barrel race, rope, etc and if their conformation won’t hold up - same issues reach the point, too expensive to keep up and they get sold at low levels. If you want to rehab horses, there are plenty out there. But if you want to compete, find a good, healthy, good conformation horse and have it properly trained so you can enjoy it for years. Back decades ago, working horses were needed whether on the working cattle ranch, or on the farm. Horses use to have to work a plow, be able to take the kids to school, family to church and then out for a romantic buggy ride when courting. Those days are gone for most people but the Mennonites, Amish etc are still around and there are many draft horse folks still use their horses for farm work. It’s a lot nicer than a noisy old gasoline engine.

The sound of the saddle and the view behind the ears got to me. I, too, can no longer ride. But this reminds me so much of me riding in NATRC (North American Trail Ride Conference) rides. They are also timed with a window that you must stay in or you lose points. Plus they have obstacles that you needed to do. If you couldn't do it to the Vet Judge's and Horsemanship Judge's satisfaction, you lost points. You started with 100 points and the rider with the highest points would win their division and the horse with the highest points would win their division. Yes, horse and rider were judged separately. So sometimes your horse had a higher score than you did. They also had horse and rider awards for the highest combined score for their division. My very first ride I was an hour outside of my window. Thus I lost 60 points, just for that. So the judge secretaries and ride manager came to me asking me what I wanted to do. I could take the hit on points or just count the ride as a completion. Since I was just thrilled to be able to complete the ride after being bedridden and then in a wheelchair and finally able to ride again, I took the completion. After that I was hooked either competing or volunteering. Now I have the memories. And CC to take me along for the ride! THANKS CC!

Girl! Thank you for taking a Mustang into consideration. You will never regret it. My mustang is out of Devil’s Garden also. I’ve had different breeds throughout my life, mainly quarter horses, but this mustang is the horse of my life. He has the smoothest gaits of any horse I’ve ever been on. He is the most surefooted horse I’ve ever been on. And possibly the fastest. I used to have a thoroughbred off the track. But the main thing about my Mustang, is that he is the most loving, most personable, most curious, and so loyal. He’s actually like a big dog. He can see the house from his box stall in the barn. He will watch for me and talk to me in his nickering. I love him so much. I would love to see you get a Mustang and watch the that journey. I love the how you are with your horses and care you give them and the way you train. @theclevercowgirl

There's nothing on earth that compares to riding an Arabian, period. They're unmatched at endurance bar none. When you open up an Arab, that's true horse power with strength and elegance all rolled up in one incredible creature ❤!

The Australian Whalers are excellent horses as well. They have a beautifully long loping trot that you can sit for the whole day and great stamina plus they are really nice natured. If you don’t know the breed, look them up, particularly around WW1. They were the Australian forces go to horse. Unfortunately, now a lot of them were left to become wild Brumbies (Mustangs) and face culling. There’s a big movement to save them. They come in most sizes as they were originally bred to cover every walk of life. From ponies to heavy cart horses.

I say this a lot and I get a lot of "What are you talking about?" looks and comments. I have another saying that gets me a lot of derision. It is " fear knocked on my door. Faith answered. Nobody was there. "(Faith is the opposite of fear). I have many little sayings that I could not have made it through the years without knowing. If she's 1/2 Arab 1/2 Saddlebred she's a National Show Horse! My first horse was a 4 year old NSH Bay Filly. lol. She taught me so much, mainly how to have a good seat! She didn't have a stop button and would go go go go and then go! She could sidepass faster than most horses could trot. And she "floated" side to side, Lord what a fun horse she was

I prefer Thoroughobreds, Appies and draft crosses. But I have had and ridden a couple dozen breeds and crosses. If you like a particular breed then just look until you find the right individual. Remember there is no best color or breed only best horse for your heart.

On that first gallop you took it transported me back many years to when I used to ride a thoroughbred mare that my mother rescued after it flunked out of racing. Yeah! Helmets are important. Most 1/2 Arabians are saddlebred mix. They cross for size and flash. The Arabian shows recognize 1/2 as there is a registry.

If my memory serves me right, The Arabian Horse Registry came up with the National Show Horse Registry which was a cross of a Saddlebred and an Arabian. The thought was having an even showier horse for the show ring. But that was close to 50 years ago so don't know if that registry is still around or morphed into something else...

Thanks for taking us along with you, it was a beautiful ride. I grew up riding my uncle's saddlebred cattle horses and they were very tall, at least for a short legged pre-teen. The terrain around Boise was similar to your ride, except the foothills were steeper. The horses worked cattle and holding on when they decieded to cut a cow when we were rounding up was essential, especially in steep hilly areas, and man, could those long legs run! Fortunately none of us ever got hurt, nobody then wore helmets, they weren't a thing in the mid-1960's.

A lady I worked for did endurance rides in CA. One event Arabians tended to win. (100 miles?) She talked of one "dancing" across the finish line, around midnight (?) after a strenuous mountain route and long ride. Enjoyed your memory of Frisco Bill and seeing the terrain. That was a nice kindness escorting the Mustang through the route. Nice complements about the quality of the area used/trail.

My guess is it was the Tevis Cup Ride. 100 miles in less that 24 hours. The last time I checked the finishing times for the winners was under 12 hours! But the most coveted prize is the best conditioned horse from the top 10? finishers. Would have liked to enter that one back in the day as their motto is "to finish is to win". Everyone who finishes wins a buckle. They have one area of the trail called cougar rock where it looks like the horse is almost climbing straight up a huge boulder.

My horse, an Arabian, Keepsake won best conditioned in the TEVIS back in 2010. She was so beautiful, a bay with white. Very forward girl, she’s missed.

What a beautiful ride, thank you for taking us with you. The organizers did a very good job, as well, prepping the trail. There is nothing like a full on gallop on an Arabian, that really looked like a blast!

🇨🇦 The most fun I ever had on horseback was in a fox hunt (humane hunt, dragged scent). Even the most sensible of horses can lose their minds in this kind of setting, with the pack of hounds and the noise & speed. My boy was a sensible warmblood, but he quickly remembered his Thoroughbred half and wanted to be right up there with the hounds (bad manners for newbies). We galloped the beach, navigated the woods & fields, jumped the brush hedges... in fact, one four foot hedge was bigger than anything I had jumped before. He jumped it big and I got off balance. But my honest boy moved under me mid-jump to compensate, so I didn't come off. That kind of honesty in a horse is golden! So at the end of the hunt while many of other riders were already inside at the Hunt Breakfast, I was cooling out my boy, drying him off, wrapping his legs and giving him some tasty munchies before I joined them. You should do some more of these types of activities - it doesn't have to be all work. ❤️

As a former owner of an Arabian I love it when people discover the beauty and specialness of the breed.There is a good reason why a lot of endurance horses are full blooded or half Arabians. And I am glad to see you with a different Arabian so you can see the similarities to Ziggy so you don't stress as much about him being comfortable alone.
