8:04 I like how the box art has the number 2 in both Roman and Arabic numerals.

Great Saiyaman IS in Budokai 1, but he’s pretty hard to unlock.

When it comes to differences in game art, we usually think of cases where the west ruined the art, like Megaman on the NES (and many other cases), but it's worth remembering that Japan also committed some atrocities like with Crash and Gex.

Idk the Japanese Gex but dissing Japanese Crash like that? Nah dude, you don’t do that to the origin of the Crash Dance.

One of the most Jarring examples of this is funnily enough Crash Bandicoot, he looks cuter in the japanese cover arts but in America he had that edgy, manic look he's popular for also Kirby is Angrier in America, but cheerful in Japan i think they also(?) tried doing something similar with Klonoa but i may be wrong (yeah, klonoa's expressions are different in retrospect with the other versions released in other countries, this happens for both Door to Phantomile and Lunatea's Veil)

can we bring this trend back at some point it'd be great

on the topic of covers/branding, i hate how they rebranded wipeout 2097 as xl in the us and japan. 2097 is a much cooler name and the cover art was incredible only to be replaced with bad cgi in the north american version

3:50 I actually like the North American version more. There's too much going on on the Japanese and European version

I’m super nostalgic for PaRappa The Rapper 2’s box art. I love the PlayStation button dance floor and the US cover art is actually shiny! PaRappa 2 is one of my favorite games and the cover art is forever burned into my memory. One of my favorite cover art differences is The Bouncer. The JPN box art is the game’s logo on a brick wall background. There’s several pieces of graffiti painted on the wall, such as the Dog Street logo, Mikado and Fate. Mikado is the name of the villainous mega-corporation, and Fate is the name of the bar Sion works at. Dog Street is the name of the game’s world and a fashion brand of said world. The US and PAL versions of the cover art feature Sion standing against a different graffiti-stained brick wall, cracking his knuckles with a smile on his face. Interestingly, both versions of the cover art feature different lighting, with the PAL version using a deep shade of red whereas the US version is lighter and more colorful. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite between the two.

The biggest box art blunder in videogames I still think is the original Sonic The Hedgehog on Sega Genesis. Every region got almost entirely different box-art, different designs of Sonic, and so on, however for whatever reason Sega didn't impose a rule for it to be formatted per CONTINENT, so each country could make their own box art. Cue Sega of Canada deciding that the American box art looked stupid, so they just took the box art from the European Sonic 1 cover and slapped a Genesis logo on the top. Clearly it was rushed though, because the text at the bottom of the cover still calls the Genesis the Mega Drive. Now this may be bias, because I'm Canadian, but I honestly think the Canadian box art is the best. Simply because it mixes the best name for the console (Genesis) with the best box art for the game.

Never heard about parappa. Also, grateful for explaining! Why budakai one lack cel shading?

I'm not sure but my guess with the second Phoenix wright game maybe that the Japanese boxer was the result of them wanting to make sure it looked different enough from the first game because if they kept with the black background it might look too similar to the first game even though you can see there's different character portraits. It could cause confusion. So they just picked some shade of green which definitely looks different, but obviously doesn't look as good. Perhaps when they released it to other markets they realized that and made improvements which resulted in the better cover arts.
