Replacement gameboy shells (plastic parts) can be bought for about $10. comes with everything but the electronics on the inside. save the gameboys and use replacement parts. they'll be in better shape, and you won't be ruining a very nice condition gameboy that's survived 25 years until it met you. also, they sell red NES style buttons for the original gameboy. look into them to have all your buttons match.
@Priinsu8 жыл бұрын
+Nick Schultz Where do you get the gameboy shells and NES buttons? is there a way I could do the super famicom japanese style button layout if I go for this project? Your input would be much appreciated.
@nickschultz42048 жыл бұрын
+Darkman flEx (Prince) the site for buttons is called kitsch-bent. google it. they have a NES style d pad as well, with little arrows and all. it's possible you could make a SNES style one, but you would have to buy a few button sets i think.

Having worked with plastic for years, here's a few hints: For the battery compartment, it might be easier to make a cut across with the dreml, then cut out squares from that cross with an xacto knife and gently pull with pliers. It's a lot quicker, and you get fewer rough edges to sand down later. For the screw pins by the screen, if you run around the edges you can reach with an xacto knife before wiggling with your pliers, there's a higher chance of them staying intact. The plastic will want to break at its weakest point, and with a grove right where you want it to break, you can ensure that's the weakest part.

Was thinking about modifying a snes controller pcb for controls as it's looks like the could be space saved by doing so plus it's already ground chained and lots of space for soldering. Only question is, do you know if the buttons would Line up with the existing holes on the gameboy case. I'm think if cutting the snes controller pcb in half and solder what I need to do it runs as it should.

Hey, I was just wondering, would it be possible to use a Pi B+ for this project? Or is that too big for the case and a Zero is necessary?
@esprithk6 жыл бұрын
You can just buy Gameboy empty case from China. Go to Taobao.com and search "gameboy 機殻". Actually, Raspberry Pi3 B is only 85.6mm x 56.5mm x 17mm, while Gameboy Classic is 146mm x 90mm x 32mm. I think it is possible to completely replace the top screen section with a Raspberry Pi 3B+screen kit. Then just 3D print part of the top section of backcover, as well as 3D print a Black/or Grey color plastic piece to cover up the screen area. Install a tiny recargable power bar(plug directly the microUSB on screen(which also supplies power to Pi3), the lower section install a keypad/buttom PCB module.

So you need insides of game boy for this project? Not just the case? It's really hard for me to find a broken game boy, the cases are easier to find.
@MichaelRampage8 жыл бұрын
Wermy actually uses some of the game boys components. Power switch, headphone jack, cartridge reader, controller board. So if you can find those, you can use the game boy case. Although I don't know if it'll end up costing you more than just purchasing a regular game boy.

+wermy Ooo thanks a bunch!!! I clicked on the forums link so I got lost. Haha. Also, I was thinking, for adding the X and Y buttons, what do you think about this method: 1. From the original A & B buttons, measure where the edge of the new buttons will be and mark that placement on the case with a pencil. 2. Align the circles of the 'controller' where you marked the edges. 3. Directly trace the circles onto the GB case.
