For a small to medium sized living room with 8 foot ceilings, this speaker system actually sounds really good for the budget minded individual. I am using an Onkyo TX-NR7100 and have calibrated the speakers in their positions using DIRAC. It is pleasantly surprising. Got my receiver new from Amazon for $893 and the speakers for $350. After taxes and shipping ( shipping was free on Amazon Prime), I only spent $1,350.00 for all of it. Watching Dolby Atmos and DTS-X content with the correct speaker configuration in the Onkyo along with DIRAC calibration has provided a noticeable upgrade to my previous 7.1 Surround Sound System. Sound is much more ambient with a greater depth in the sound stage from the music sound track to the movie sound affects. Frequency response is more then satisfactory for the price I paid.

I have a nice Atlantic Technology THX Certified 5.1 system, but the Klipsch cinema 5.1.4 package intrigued me as does Atmos so I too went for the Newegg deal. My sub died on my 5.1 system, so for the price of a sub I got a 5.1.4 Klipsch speaker package. Was thinking about getting the Denon 760 at Costco (on sale for $379!) but am leaning towards the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX305 9.2 channel AVR. Seems like Pioneer has HDMI 2.1 figured out (unlike Denon and Yamaha which are buggy at best from everything I've read) plus it's 9 channels for the full Atmos experience. Could also add a second sub I for 5.2.4 suppose :) Any benefit to different sized subs?

Yes! The only caveat though is that you won’t be able to utilize all 4 of the upward firing speakers. You’d need a 9 channel receiver for that. But for what it’s worth, the 5 main speakers and subwoofer are great, and still make it a great deal. 🤘

I wanted the Klipsch 5.1, and had been shopping for a good deal on them lately. BUT when I found that I could pick up the Klipsch 5.1.4 for $299, I jumped on it and bought it immediately; just recently. I also bought the Onkyo AVR6100 to go along with it for $279. However, I have yet to set up the system; my movie room needs a bit of remodeling first. Then I need a new widescreen monitor for the completion. As this will replace my old Panasonic SX-316 avr, I am certain that my new system will be far better than I had previously. Since my room is small; roughly 12'W x 13'L, and it is a shared common wall with a neighbor, I'll have to dial the sound levels down, especially the bass. I believe for the money, I got a pretty good deal, and I am absolutely sure it will offer me far more value for my budget to meet my expectations fully. I know there are a lot of avr and speaker options available; many far more expensive and far more than what I need. But I think I got the best value for what I need in a home entertainment system.

Currently, I have Pioneer 5.1 receiver which has 140w output, and I am not planning to upgrade my receiver any time soon. Please advise. Thank you very much in advance!

Hello @Ealan, Hope you are doing well! I am happy to let you know that I recently upgraded my AVR to Denon AVR X4700H so that I can get the full benefit of the Dolby Atmos sound system with my new Klipsch Reference Cinema 5.1.4 speakers. I have a few questions though, can I use my old Monoprice satellite speakers as the height speakers and Klipsch speakers as floor speakers? The reason I am asking is that I feel the upward-firing speakers of the Klipsch system are not powerful enough, so I am wondering if using Monoprice satellite speakers as height speakers would give a better Dolby Atmos effect compared to Klipsch upward-firing speakers? Also, can I use Klipsch and Monoprice subwoofers together? Trying to see if I can have a 5.2.4 speaker setup. Is it safe to mix and match Klipsch speakers/subwoofer with Monoprice speakers/subwoofer on a single Denon AVR? Please advise. Highly appreciate your guidance!
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 2 жыл бұрын
You absolutely can do that! Most of the height effects are atmospheric and fairly subtle anyway, so mounting your Monoprice satellites up high will work much better than the upward-firing Klipsch speakers. And you can most certainly use the Klipsch and Monoprice subs together. Just make sure and level match them so one doesn’t overpower the other. But 2 subwoofers is always better than 1. 😁🤘

good chance that the atmos experience wasn't up to par because you skipped the accuEQ setup. Based on the screenshot you shared, the Heights were only set 1ft further than the mains, so the atmost speaker to ceiling distance was not added which would create a different delay for them if they were. As Andrew Jones suggested with his atmos enabled speakers, once you run the auto EQ and finalize the distances/delays, you should add 1 to 3dB to the atmos speakers since they will lose some energy from having to bounce the sound off the ceiling. I run a 7.4.4 set up with the Andrew Jones Pioneer Elite speakers that have the atmos enable speakers built-in (like these Klipsch in your review), and the atmos effect is very convincing. My buddy just picked up this Klipsch system and will be using the Onkyo TX-NR7100. His room is not optimal since one wall opens up to another room, but it should be descent once he calibrates it.

Honestly, the cost jump from 7 to 9 channel AVRs is significant, so if you wanna save some money at first, going with a 7 channel AVR will still get you a great sounding system, even without utilizing all 4 upward-firing speakers. The 5 main ear-level speakers and subwoofer are still great for the price. All 3 AVRs they sell at Costco (Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha…in that order) are good. Sure! You wouldn’t be utilizing the upward firing Atmos speakers built in, but for the application, this would still be a kickass 5.1 speaker system. There is also the 5.1 Reference Theater Pack for less, but I understand if you want bigger speakers and a bigger sub, and this system is still a great deal for what you get. 🙂

I'm about to upgrade from a soundbar to a Klipsch speakers system and you have helped a lot. Are the av receivers that you mention (denon, Sony, Onkyo, etc) the same as a "network" receiver? I also want to have a sound system around my house to play music and not sure if the home theater system is enough or if I need something else like an stereo receiver with wi-fi as I also want to use my speakers for parties, etc and not just movies. Optimum performance, Onkyo TX-NR7100 since it’s a 9 channel receiver without pre outs, so it’s one of the least expensive ones out there currently (if you can catch it in stock, though). Otherwise, the Denon x3700h and Onkyo RZ50 are the next least expensive, even though they’re not cheap 😬

Usually if you have a choice between front or rear height speakers, you’ll want to try front first. But depending on how your home theater space is set up (or how large it is, furniture, etc) rear upward firing might be better? So I’d experiment with both just to be sure. 👍

@@ealanosborne Thank you for your quick reply. Yes I have already connected my side speaker ports to my rear upward firing ports of these speakers. Perhaps I wasn’t clear in my question, I was trying to learn two options: What if I connect the front speaker main and hight speaker ports in series to Front ports of receiver ? Will it product result? Or What if I connect Front L H and Rear L H to receiver side rear L port in series? So whatever signal goes to rear hight will go to front height too. @@Flutesofkaustubh Oh I see. Well, I don’t think I would recommend wiring the upward firing in series, since those upward firing speakers are somewhat weak already. I would say most of what Klipsch offers is a downgrade being run and powered by McIntosh components. The particular Klipsch system is part of their lowest tier Reference line, so it’s a great bargain for those just starting to get into home theater who run their system with an all-in-one AV receiver. I know McIntosh speakers are also ridiculously expensive, so it’d be tough to get a complete system that way. But I’d maybe look into SVS’s new Ultra Evolution speakers or Aperion Audio’s Verus line if you take advantage of McIntosh’s HiFi stereo prowess along with a nice home theater setup. Or perhaps KEF, Focal, or Bowers & Wilkins speakers if your budget allows for it, TBH. 👍

The Sony HT-A9 is (so I’ve heard from several sources) incredible. The next benchmark when it comes to something akin to a sound bar. Setting the knob to LFE means it’ll be up to the AVR to send low frequency effects to the sub with movies and TV shows (which typically has a crossover of 120 Hz automatically). So you could set the knob to 100 Hz also, to match your mains. Typically you would set the crossover on the sub when listening to both movies and music on your system quite often. @@ealanosborne I like your videos. I just started watching today actually. I have a question for you. Is there a subwoofer amp for home theater purposes that would work for a 15” sub I have in a sealed box? It was meant for a car setup but I don’t use it anymore. It’s a dvc 4 ohm so I can wire it to a single 8 ohm. It’s power rating is 150 rms 300 peak.

Is this set better then high level soundbars like samsung soundbars the best of them
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
Eh…flagship Samsung soundbars will be better than this, but it’s also 2 completely different philosophies: Do you want “one and done,” where you can easily connect things and not worry about speaker wire, but can’t swap out any components? Go with a soundbar. Or do you want to use this Klipsch system and a receiver as a starting point, being able to upgrade different parts slowly over time? 🤷‍♂️ Food for thought. 😊

I have Onkyo TX-NR696 which is 7.2 channel but it has zone 2 also. Can I connect this system to my TX-NR696? Can I power all the speakers and their upward firing speakers? If yes, should I be aware of any specifics? Any response is greatly appreciated!!
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 3 жыл бұрын
That Onkyo can only process 7 channels at once. So even if you use Zone 2, it limits the rest of the receiver to play only up to 5 channels. But you could still get away with 7 channels powering this Klipsch Cinema system. Sure, you're not getting the full effect, since you can only power 2 of the 4 upward firing speakers, but the main satellite speakers still sound really good even by themselves!

I have the Sony AVR STR-DH790 and this Klipsch 5.1.4 system. Do I set them as Small or Large speakers in the AVR settings. I have them set at Large.
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
Set them to small. Large means you have big tower speakers or large bookshelf speakers that are full bandwidth - meaning their frequency response can go all the way down to almost subwoofer territory - like 20 or 30 or 40 Hz

Thanks Ealan! Loved watching & using your videos as reference for the past 3 months of having this system, and today I learned something new. One thing however, on the Sony DAC while playing stereo music in Dolby Surround, the sound is not as punchy as when the speakers are set to Large setting. Other than that I see a noticably better audio quality having set them to Small.

@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 2 жыл бұрын
@@suhailakthar5575 Well, then yes, you could add the 500SA speakers for surround back, but the S760H can only process a total of 7 channels and 2 subwoofers. So you could have a 7 speaker bed layer (L,C,R, Left surround, right surround, left back surround, right back surround), but you wouldn’t get any Atmos height action. Hey congrats on the hookup! 😁 And yeah, that Pioneer AVR will be able to power the main speakers, but not the upward firing “Atmos” speakers since the VX-1123 is old enough that it doesn’t decode Dolby Atmos or DTS:X signals. But it’ll still be a great 5.1 system for sure! 🤘🎉

@@myquietreviews Well, the utilize all 4 upward firing speakers in your new system, you'd need a 9 channel AVR. Cheapest one on the market right now is the Pioneer LX305 for $1,199. Although the Onkyo RZ50 is on sale currently on crutchfield.com for $1,299 which is a WAY better deal. You could still get away with a 7 channel AVR and only utilize 2 of the 4 upward firing speakers. Still a good compromise, since 7 channel AVRs are much less. Sony DH790 or Denon S760 come to mind. 👍

How to connect these to a Denon X1700H? It has "assignable" back surround connectors, but no mention of hight in the manual. Edit: found. So should i connect all 4x upfiring speakers as "top middle" ?
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 2 жыл бұрын
You can if you'd like, but that would split the signal in half, so it might not be worth connecting all 4. Since the X1700H is a 7 channel AVR, I'd recommend just connecting the front heights and assigning them as "Dolby Speakers" since they are bouncing audio off the ceiling. Or if it makes more sense to connect the 2 rear height speakers in your listening space, you could test that out too.
