I’ve been a working actor for the last 23 years which has been a dream come true. With the new emergence of Self-Tapes and working without direction for the past 3 years, I thought I would write this to help fellow actors who are a bit at odds with this new system of casting. My hope is that it will flatten the learning curve and help actors book more work from their self submissions.

Unfortunately, the other caveat for an audition coach is the cost, especially if one is lucky enough to audition fairly regularly. $50-100 every time you get a good audition adds up. Sometimes we have to trust our own gut and submit what we think is best. Now, I understand this vid is a plug for your own coaching and I understand about having an objective view point especially from a trained pro, but acting is expensive ie; training/ classes, auditioning, time of from work, yes, we all have to have jobs, travel expenses. This is a marathon, both financially and emotionally. I appreciate your videos.

The first two are important, and you can find that advice in many books. But hiring a coach, as well as hiring someone to tape my audition, were not very useful for me in LA, just costly. Studying classic film-making gave me the confidence to assess my own skills objectively and determine where I might fit in. Acting workshops where actors are taped doing scenes were useful, as were actor get-togethers where people were assigned scenes and performed in front of the others who then gave feedback. As long as casting can see you and hear you, and you're doing a good job, they're going to watch it (and they'd be foolish not to), so you don't need to be one of the herd. There are two things in addition to the above that I've found to be game-changers in how I come to life on screen: (1) taping in a setting in or around my house that is similar to the setting for the scene I'm doing. I've done auditions outdoors, in my travel trailer, at the kitchen table, and without a reader (just memorizing the lines in between) and gotten good results. Shooting against a blank wall and with a non-actor reader can create a dead audition. You need to relax and have a definite sense of purpose. And (2) doing something with my hands that relates in some way to the scene. I put on gloves, drink coffee, brush the horse, write a grocery list, work on the computer, make the bed, etc., and I always pause the action when I speak my lines. The action gives the scene life, the need to pause encourages pacing. And where did I learn this? Watching Maggie Smith carry on a conversation while drinking tea. :)

My only question about this is why are there so many celebrities such as Jenna Fischer that said once they stopped caring and putting less effort into their auditions they booked more or even booked their big role? I know people who put everything they had into a self tape for something that was mid sized but they feel they put less effort into something that was bigger (was tired that day or didn't fully fit the character) and then booked the bigger project they put less into?

It's about not being desperate to get the job. Plain and simple. Putting effort in is better that a lack luster submission. Less effort is counter productive. I"ll be doing a whole video on this subject. Thanks so much for your question!
