Great video as always! One of the best credits themes ever. Pain, sadness, tenderness and hope. I've always felt something very personal about this theme and it made sense when I read Mitsuda’s interview that he wrote this theme when he was in high school, for his best friend who had passed away. Thank you for the video, Davi!

That sounds like a fantastic interview! Would you be able to share the title and publication?

Aaw man. I discovered Chrono Trigger only few years ago, but it was so good, so captivating, that i immediately love it as if i've played it since kid Thanks for that video
Chrono Trigger OST never fails to make me emotional. One of my all-time favorites among all sorts of media.

This is the scene were the gang is flying on the epoch to find Cronos' mom, I belive. The descending notes makes me feel that we are flying with them.. DANG I NEED TO REPLAY THIS GAME!

Oh man, i forgot just how beautiful this song is. There's also SO many other elements to the melodic and harmonic choices in this that recall other songs. The first 3 notes are absolutely taken from somewhere, though I can't pinpoint exactly where. This is my favorite soundtrack from any game, even beating out Final Fantasy and Nobuo Uematsu's hundreds of masterpieces. And I do not say that lightly, as I consider him the absolute best video game composer of all time. But there's something about the Chrono Trigger soundtrack and the way it conveys and creates the emotional tone of every moment that is just unmatched in my mind.

Yeah, I was waiting to listen to a Chrono Tigger track, cause I don't know the game but I know the soundtrack is one of your favourites. And I noticed the new edit for the video jajaja. Thanks Giovanni! Cool track, I remember the Mitsuda lick, in my case I remember it from Pokemon Black, in a tower with dragon pokemons iirc. Also, the end is so cool jajaja. That's it. ¡Adiós!

To Far Away Times managed to so perfectly capture the feeling of nostalgia and an ended journey that when I beat Chrono Trigger for the first time it made me nostalgic for a game that I was still technically playing.

The fact that early video games had to be so melody driven in their music due to the limits of the technology was a blessing in disguise. It makes it all so much more memorable long after, doubling down on the nostalgia from songs like this

Davi, I love your analysis, and in-topic with the whole "mannerisms", I hope you give a listen to Risk of Rain music by Chris Christodolou sometime. Not only is it a masterclass in composition, it's also a fun musical ride with lots of references.
@vaulttech16 күн бұрын
Talking about the "Chrono Trigger mannerisms", those arpeggios from the beginning remind me of Corridors of Time, and the melody (before the flute) reminds me "Black Omen" (the harmony is probably identical to the "running" part of Black Omen). Then, when the flute comes, the arpeggios change (and remind me of Peaceful Days), and the flute reminds me not only of the main theme, but also of Secret of the Forest (the first and second parts) and the flute from Ocean Palace (which is, well, Magus Theme). And then, when the piano part comes (at ~7:13 in this video) it reminds me of the piano ending part of Secret of the Forest... and those last two chords ("almost tense chord" and "tense chord" at 8:14) are "signature" Mitsuda chords that you find everywhere in Chrono Trigger/Cross Then the clock sound is from A Premonition (of course), with the very busy bass reminding me (once again) of the end piano part of Secret of the Forest (and maybe the whole thing could also be associated to the end of Tyrano Lair). Finally, the Main Theme you listen at 10:10 is "Memories of Green" (the 5th song in the soundtrack). (and by the way, since Secret of the Forest is so amazing, I should mention that it contains a full version of the Mitsuda Lick -- with the missing notes that didn't appear in the main theme).

To Faraway Times will never _not_ make me get just a little bit emotional. It's such a great piece and an amazing send-off to one of the best games of all time. One big callback that you missed, though: The very beginning of To Far Away Times is an echo of the introduction to Corridors of Time :)

YES! Davi makes a Chrono Trigger analysis! Not only is 'To Faraway Times' one of the most emotional pieces of music in video game history, Davi's analysis revealed many, many things I didn't know even after 37 years of listening to this enchanting distillation of nostalgia that transcends time. Mitsuda is one hell of a composer that doesn't just weave beautiful music. No. He creates a Soundscape. A... world of sound that is as alive as the world it is describing with its melodies and harmonies. Powerful and immersive. Truly, the greatest of all Time. I sure hope we get more Chrono Trigger pieces, analyzed by Davi. Especially 'Corridors of Time'. I so want to hear what Davi has to say about that masterpiece of aural beauty.

6:40 I think we need to have more discussion about Mitsuda's use of percussion and atonal sounds in general. The glorious madman made a percussion-only track on the SNES (Rhythm of Wind, Sky, and Earth) to fit the prehistoric setting, and then in Chrono Cross he made sure they included the sound of fingers changing position on a guitar (easiest to hear in A Narrow Space Between Dimensions.) Edit: And the clock mentioned at 9:39 as well

@Davi Vasc here something you may not know about yasunori mitsuda the music composer for chrono trigger: In 1994, realizing that he would never get a chance to move up to a real composition duty without some drastic action and feeling concerned about his low pay, he gave Square's vice president, Hironobu Sakaguchi, an ultimatum: let him compose, or he would quit. Sakaguchi assigned the young musician to the team working on Chrono Trigger, telling him that "after you finish it, maybe your salary will go up". Mitsuda was assigned as the sole composer for the game, in the end creating 54 tracks for the final release. Mitsuda drove himself to work hard on the score, frequently working until he passed out, and would awake with ideas for songs such as the ending theme for the game. He worked himself so hard that he developed stomach ulcers and had to be hospitalized, which led Uematsu to finish the remaining tracks for him.🤔🤨🧐
@azuresea71833 ай бұрын
@Davi Vasc little more in depth information about yasunori mitsuda. Mitsuda has said that he was unsure of how to start, saying that he "must've tried to start writing the music 4 times" and that it took "a month and a half" before he knew how to compose the music for Chrono Trigger. Mitsuda slept in his studio several nights, and attributed certain tracks, such as "To Far Away Times", to inspiring dreams. He later attributed this track to an idea he was developing before Chrono Trigger, reflecting that the piece was made in dedication to "a certain person with whom I wanted to share a generation." Mitsuda tried to use leitmotifs of the Chrono Trigger main theme to create a sense of consistency in the soundtrack. He also suffered a hard drive crash that lost around forty in-progress tracks. After Mitsuda contracted stomach ulcers, regular Final Fantasy series composer Nobuo Uematsu joined the project to compose ten tracks and finish the score. Mitsuda returned to watch the ending with the staff before the game's release, crying upon seeing the finished scene. Mitsuda considers Chrono Trigger a landmark title which helped his talent mature. While Mitsuda later held that the title piece was "rough around the edges," he maintains that it had "significant influence on my life as a composer." At the time of the game's release, the number of tracks and sound effects was unprecedented, causing the soundtrack to span three discs in its 1995 commercial pressing.🤔🤨🧐

More than a decade after I played Chrono Cross, I realized that there was leitmotif from this end credit theme of Trigger in the intro theme of Cross and I damn near facepalmed my own head off.
@thickfatazumarill3 ай бұрын
Not only does the game use the main theme in the 1000 AD overworld, a fragment also shows up during the fight with Lavos in its second form, so it should still be recent on the player's mind on a first playthrough when it gets used for the last time in the credits
@Deioth2 ай бұрын
If you're a fan of Chrono Trigger, here's something entirely out of left field: Last Epoch, a Diablo-esque dungeon crawler, had its story heavily inspired by Chrono Trigger. It has a lot of good tracks that could be worth a review some time.

@valechristensen30263 ай бұрын
I think it's so evocative that the ending theme is familiar, but not tied to the motifs of the rest of the game. The entire game you're going back and forth through time seeing the same realities for usually little apparent changes. Defeating Lavos stops the "loop," the jumping through time, and the world progresses past the end we witnessed and fought against the entire game. To Far Away Times even on this level is rooted in the story.
@valechristensen30263 ай бұрын
Correction: the one leitmotif we hear at the end can be attributed, in a way, to Crono, as it's in both the title screen and the overworld of his time period. It spends most of the song setting up the bright new future, and then reminds us of our protagonist who gets to live on, and see the future he fought for.
