This takes me back to the days of the discord game adk, when it actually had more to offer than rich presence. Easy networking, etc, there even was a plugin for godot (although I managed to run it with mono). I guess when they abandoned it they just moved it from an SDK for external games to an internal experience.

I dunno, Wouldn't it be easier to just make regular webgame and post link into discord? Maybe I'm just not seeing it. But It kinda strikes me that this comes days after FBI decided to pair up with discord to monitor gamers.

Tbh i think the biggest advantage is built in games with your discord community.

Seems pretty neat. Kind of like a new version of social mobile or Facebook games, and a little like Twitch integration, but in Discord I guess? I can't see myself spending a lot of time in a voice channel with games, though unless it's for a special event or part of a dev's existing Discord server. Especially with the crashiness, I would hope there's some way to auto-save locally.

Discord has been moving in this direction for a while. They had embedded games already so opening this API to the public was the next logical step.

This might be a huge win for discord. Game devs don't have enough time to do things outside of working. Web devs however work 9 - 5 and then play video games all night and wish they could build games. This could be a product that can allow them to bridge the gap.

Well it could work for web browser game for game master dungeon and dragon rpg table top style. As well party mini game like Mario party for friends to relax.

Yeah discord is where a lot of TTRPG action happens, I could see this as a great way to keep track of that stuff asynchronously

I'm not much into web games, but~ I like the idea. If I was ever gonna use this~ I'd maybe try to push an pre-alpha build of a concept I'm working on to a discord channel to be play tested. But that's about as far as I can see this being useful for me. Though, for table top games virtually, this could be pretty amazing. Could everyone be watching the same app run? Or...? Would everyone be in a different client side app? Or a collective server based one? I don't know what the limitations are I guess. lol.

I fear it will be the same as for when they added apps to the facebook platform back then. The market will be flooded with useless mini games, I suppose. Or else the whole thing won't be accepted at all. Thus it will either over- or underperform, there won't be an inbetween. Both is bad, the one is annoying, the other one a bad decision by Discord. I think they should finally keep the Discord client as is. They add more and more features that nobody ever asked for. It once was a perfect community/chat software, now it develops into something that I honestly don't want. Why can't they just stop going further and further…?

As far as I know, godot does have facility to export games in web application format. So yeah, games made in godot is possible here.

Playroomkit exists. The free tier looks good enough and the second tier (starter) is 10 dollars for 15k monthly active users which is a better deal imo compared to other multiplayer solutions I looked into

Well any HTML5 game engine. Your game is ultimately hosted as an iFrame inside of Discord.

So it shouldn't be too bad on well managed servers, but entering random discords to "play my game" could be risky, specially if the web sandbox is not secure or if the games start asking to fill personal info before playing.

Keep in mind last year they killed off most of their Game SDK services, much of what was useful for gaming: lobbies, achievements and other data storage, Discord user authentication, etc. Don't forget they also killed off their game store. I wouldn't put too much faith in their dedication to being a game platform.

We just soft launched our first game Goober Dash on discord. We made Goober Dash in Godot, and it has custom netcode for multiplayer. Suprised you didnt see it in your activity launcher. Arent you in Canada?

I assumed that if Discord did anything relating to game-dev it would be an in-game comms solution, maybe with a spatial aspect to it. But no, it's a lame in-discord game SDK for some reason.

This is actually fantastic for some uses, like table top RPG solutions, which is already a popular use of Discord.

There actually was the discord game sdk (which was named rich presence before, and that's basically what it is again) where you could create lobbies, manage networking and have ingame voice chats, all managed via discord. But yeah, they killed that, probably in favor of this.
