It's Twitter. The site encourages low info, incomplete, and easily misinterpreted statements and revels in it through its character limit. It's all by design. Honestly, the sooner we're all off Twitter, the quicker society's collective IQ will shoot back up unless the alternative is somehow even worse.

It feels like Twitter is a competition to see who can dunk on others the hardest/fastest. I saw someone saying that "no good game is made without crunch," and people were (understandably) dunking on them, but that didn't change their mind. I tried actually talking to them and asking what they meant. After a couple follow-up questions, it turned out they meant "no good games are made without passionate devs voluntarily working extra hard on a game they care about." They also thought that executive-mandated crunch always lead to bad games. While it's debatable how true either statement is, it was clear the main issue was just defining "crunch," which nobody was talking about cuz Twitter is a website of soundbites and one-upsmanship.
@AuroraAce.

TLDR twitter sucks Not only they misrepresented you but also misrepresented themselves. As you said, I'm sure GMTK wouldn't want to gatekeep a certain topic, so the phrasing "I implore you stop talking about game engines. It’s embarrassing" is needlessly combative and mildly ignorant. Of course the worst part are the fans. Disagreements are ok, but why people feel the need to attack someone based on a 30s clip of a video they didn't even watch? Hope GMTK pay more attention before engaging in this behavior in the future

But then he goes to say that the longest video he ever stomach to watch was only 2-hours long and that he believes that “if you can say more with less, do :P” when asked if longer analysis videos suffer in quality due the points being stretched. While dogpiling is wrong and thus I'm not defending anything that's transpired, I do want to point out that such a fear is still generally unfounded. Any engine can achieve nearly any goal if done correctly. It's not about the engine, it's about the effort put in. The only thing an engine choice does is determine what specific problems you have to tackle to complete your project. If the team was unable to do so with Unity, what makes anyone think they could've done much better with any other engine? A different general purpose engine would've just been a slightly different problem set, and a custom engine would've been a larger and more complex problem set.
@Meatball132

edit: This was explained in the video too but I didn't get that far before writing this comment. Since i think it wasn't explained very clearly in the video I'll leave it up, though. The emulators don't even run in Unity at all, actually! Unity's used for some of the newer games in the collection and for the hub area. The emulators, on the other hand, are only rendered onto a surface in Unity - just so they can be displayed to the screen (and, by the way, this is probably where most of the latency comes from, although there's some that naturally comes with emulation in general and they could've just not optimised that). In other words, on Unity's side there's a camera pointing to a texture. After generating a frame, the emulator switches that texture out for the frame it just generated. Then when Unity does its own drawing, it is pointing at the texture the emulator just pushed out, and you get the final image. But otherwise, the emulator code has absolutely nothing to do with Unity. It is completely separate and in fact it IS running on its own engine. But since the rest of the game is Unity there really isn't a more reasonable way to do it, unfortunately.

Thanks for the info! Can you give me the source of your information? I want to find out more about how it's actually done. I think there's also the problem of getting key inputs into the emulator, isn't Unity supposed to read them and transfer to the emulation software via inprocess communication? If they both run at different clock speeds it might also cause lag, because when Unity gets an input and passes it down to the emulator, it might not pick it up right away. This might be just mere milliseconds though. So I want to see how something like this is done.

This was an extremely well-said video. I find your scripts are, consistently, extremely articulate and well-written. I, personally, don't think there really needed to be any context to your original statement in the vid (about how you make games); so if the rest of the viewers weren't hung up on that point at that time and didn't comment about it, why/how did GMTK misinterpret your point? I've only heard of that channel once or twice before, so I can't really judge his character, but I find it extremely irresponsible for a creator of his size to publicly make a callout post on a smaller channel that he's over 10 times the size of. How did he even find your video in the first place? It doesn't seem like he watched all the way through or else he probably would have understood your point better, so did he just skip to a random part of your video and clipped it in a way that bolstered his argument without regard for context? Also, I'm glad he apologized in these comments and on Twitter today and deleted the original tweet, even owning up to how his original tweet was "toxic" in one of the replies to his apology tweet, but the way they're worded is super strange. YT comment: "Hey - I want to offer my apologies. I'm sorry, and I feel terrible that it caused you anxiety and for people to pile on you. I should have thought harder before making the tweet, it was a dumb move." Twitter: "I want to give an apology to @silokhawk, the KZbinr behind yesterday's Unity clip. It came across as punching down, and led to people piling on a fellow creator, which caused anxiety and hurt. I'm sorry. There were better ways to make my point. I've deleted the original tweet." and "(Sorry, not yesterday! June 20th. What is time?)" To me, it comes across not like "I'm sorry for what I said, misrepresenting you, and taking your clip out of context", but more like "I'm sorry I gave you anxiety & you got hurt by what my fans and I said. I still stand by my point, though - I just should have worded it better." In that sense, it's an awful apology. What even possessed him to say something so negative, condescending, and clearly directed at you like that in the first place? I guess I'll just have to also blame Twitter. Of course the blame doesn't all lie with them - the people who tweeted at you and commented that stuff are total sheep lmao. But they're all most likely his followers and probably wouldn't have even said anything if GMTK didn't make the tweet in the first place, so it all goes back to him. Also, him liking tweets that further dogpiled on you is awful. I don't care how nice you say this guy is - everyone's got skeletons in their closets. Oh well, I guess the damage is already done. Here's hoping you'll get through this alright! Can't wait for the next vid.

When you used a clip of _Yooka-Laylee_ as an example, I spent the rest of the video flashing back to this old video about the game by videogamedunkey. Don't take my word for any of these details, but: I think at one part he was listing red flags that popped up leading to said game's release, and at one part of that one part, he says something like, "And then we find out it's being made in Unity, which is the same engine as the Donald Trump game, so." He was referring to a smaller game that uses simplistic, ragdoll-centric physics to intentionally increase its comedy. I don't know what the optimal term for this is, but it's not the kind of "game" you buy for a console, it's kind that a person creates and uploads to the internet and then you watch Markiplier or SpaceHamster react to it. Returning to the point though, Dunkey never adds any asterisks to his mention of the game engine used, he just insinuates, "Unity is the engine you only use for funny meme games," and moves on. Imagine if Yooka-Laylee released in 2022 somehow, and it was videogamedunkey getting soft-cancelled by GMTK..?

I honestly thought that it was some kind of throwaway joke. Not one that I thought landed particularly well, but still a silly, innocent joke. Just to be clear, I don't agree on what you say in this video (I'd guess that Unity has absolutely nothing to do with the emulation part of that game), but I'd argue that seeing the Unity logo on a release from a very big publisher is worrysome because it screams "CHEAP". Not because you can't make game that don't look cheap in Unity, but because it hints at said game having an extremely tight budget. That's what big publisher use Unity (or even UE, sometimes) for: projects about which they don't care that much about. Having said this, I think that GMTK posting that tweet is extremely cringeworthy. Why did he think that extrapolating a clip from its context from a youtube channel which has 1/10th of its own following would be a good idea? Didn't he realize that he was directing his mob to your twitter feed? Is this internet thing new to him?! As a long time follower of his, I sincerely hope he will apologize for this. Twitter breeds such hair-trigger reactions from people. Context seems to be a concept that's completely lost on them - the only narrative that matters to them is the one that's been assigned _on Twitter._ And honestly, I think the design of Twitter itself is the biggest cause of that. It's a horrible website that turns people into impatient, small-minded shit-slingers without them even realising it's happened.

At this point Twitter is a platform where 4 times out of 5 you can't reason with anybody. It feels like no matter how respectfull and understanding you try to be others will interpret what you say in the most negative way possible. People only want to see topics as black and white situations when in reality there is lots of gray areas that need to be addressed but people shrug it off. Some have gotten so petty at this point. You'd try your best to carefully explain a point of yours in a fair fashion and in response someone will not take you seriously and completely miss what you meant. The word limit doesn't make it any easier. Most of the time your point will be degraded by people writing posts that mock you because thats how you win arguments now, you try to look like you dont care and make fun of others so you get more likes, this is what discussing topics has come to. And yeah i get it sometimes you shouldn't take every conversation you have seriously and when its not about a big topic that is usually ok but when it comes to important stuff like this, people assuming that you acively want to cause issues when it couldn't be further from the truth is really disheartening.

It would be interesting to investigate why the known emulated collections you spoke of played with latency. Fundamentally they'd use Unity for the sake of menus and overworld and other glue rather than the emulation itself, emulation is just running render to texture, and indeed this is the same way any modern emulator works, it renders to texture. But there's a lot of fine tuning needed in the presentation layer to force the texture to be presented ASAP in emulators. It seems it should be possible to tweak the renderer in Unity to do the same, especially for companies which have a license with source access. But they didn't.
