GRRM also subverts expectations (the whole deal about ASOIAF is that it subverts our expectations about fantasy), is a feminist, pacifist, and all around leftist. The difference is he is a good writer. Injection of politics doesn't ruin stories, poor execution does. D&D are just hacks who try to emulate something they don't understand, so they are just throwing some popular catchphrases trying to defend their "work".

well yeah.... my only really big problem was Episode 3.... i am willing to forgive all the illogical movie conveniences if it serves the story.... like Gendry sending raven to dragonstone and dany flying back in matter of days, whatever, served the story, it was shortcut... E3 was fine until they just killed NK with no real impact on characters, mythology or westeros even though they were building since beginning.... we cannot take it back and they completely ruined it... i wonder how its possible for Dan and Dave to read all the books and do the show for 10 years and still not come up with anything other than just cheap jump and end?!!!!!!! they could have: had Bran flashbacking to the past and influence past (historical scene with that valyrian dagger, some NK scene, very cheap to make), had Bran somehow stop NK army by his mental trick when NK was close and heroes kill him just in nick of time, had valyrian sword actually fighting WW (very cheap), somebody important die, let the NK wonder more south killing Cerceis allies..... but for example now people make big deal of COFFEE CUP... it literally happens in every other show from time to time and people act like its the end of the world.... people are just plain idiots these day, act like they know everything better.... literally nobody noticed it in my office, i even read about it before and i still missed it still Episode 4 was fine... good story, maybe rushed yeah, but plot moved forward and characters evolved too

The Red Wedding, although I absolutely resent it, was subverting our expectations in a good way. That was GOOD WRITING. It was logical. It wasn't what we expected, but we could at least accept it happening and it didn't shatter our suspension of disbelief. Here, it's just... What the hell were they thinking? They took the path they did for nothing BUT "muh subverted expectations" and it was so forced.

They drove the plot forward while still making perfect sense. So it blows my mind when shills try to tell me how I must REALLY feel with, "You're only mad because it wasn't what you wanted!" No, I'm mad because it wasn't done WELL. I don't care who killed to the damn NK. But D&D literally set it up to where Jon was right there, in the perfect location and condition to fight the NK. But what did they do in order to shoehorn Arya as the killing blow? They suddenly closed Jon's very clear path to the NK with White Walkers! So now all Arya's left to do is LEAP OVER ALL OF THEM.

It sucks, because Ned and the rest of the Stark family are set up as the protagonists and we're rooting for them but you can also tell that they made a lot of mistakes that put them in the position to die. It was very well written. What they've done now is use shock value and try to convince us that it was good writing because it "subverted expectations" even though it doesn't make any logical sense at all.

@@Garycarlyle City of Theives is actually pretty good. But writing for T.V. incentivizes more bombasticism and spectacle. They need to keep you hanging on the edge of your seat but also coming back for what you want. So they'll subvert your expectations but in a way that doesn't take too many risks, especially when it comes to getting rid of fan favorite characters. In T.V. format it's way easier to gloss over the "wait wtf? That doesn't make sense." Moments that would bother you in a book.

It's not just the fact that almost nothing could be seen because 1/3 of the episode was pure darkness. It's HOW it was done. The episode was stupid on so many levels. WHY was the Dothraki just thrown in head first to the enemy, instead of used as a reserve to flank the enemy- like what Stannis did to the Wildlings? What was the Dothraki plan before Melisandre showed up? They didn't have Valerian steel blades, they didn't have dragonglass Arakhs. They didn't have flaming swords before she showed up. When the fire barricade was started up around Winterfell, why didn't they burn the dead within the ring? Why were they surprised when the dead got up? That's the point, that's the main meme, dog. They're the army of the dead. Why did Melisandre even go to Volantis? I thought (they talk about this mostly in book 5, but its even in the show a little bit) that she was gonna come back with a squad of red priests. After all, the line in Volantis is "The dragon queen in Mereen is freeing slaves, and she is Azor Ahai. When she calls upon us- we need to be ready" Why were the White walkers there to do NOTHING???? What was the point in 8.2 and for one brief moment to pan out and show us all the white walkers on mounts so we could see DOZENS of WWs if they did FUCK ALL. Why was ghost only in one scene? Why show us SO MUCH of the crypts if NO ONE except a couple red shirts died down there. WHAT IS THE POINT? We didn't see a SINGLE WW fight someone with Valerian Steel. Why is it that if you're a red shirt, you get swarmed with the dead and attacked, but if your name is Sam- the Army of the dead just want piggy back rides? Not enough characters with names died, Pod, Gendry, Davos, Grey Worm, Brienne, Jamie, Tormund were all attacked with SHIT LOADS of the dead and surrounded- yet FUCKING PLOT ARMOR saves them all. This story used to have balls and killed characters that made mistakes. How can the Army of the dead be so in tune with sound that they can hear Arya's blood dripping on the floor- but the ENTIRE army of the dead, all the white walkers and the NK allow her to just jump in and end the fight? its BS. All this while Jon was busy YELLING AT A FUCKING ICE DRAGON From DAN AND DAVE THEMSELVES: "There's going to be an even more intense showdown between Jon and the NK, more intense then what happened at Hardhome, more intense then what happened in the 'beyond the wall' episode. Its going to shock the fans" Where was the payoff, what's the satisfying thing from this episode?

@@devinl9863 - It's pretty clear that everyone just wants to be done at this point. We all knew something was wrong when they said that the last two seasons would be shorter than 10 episodes... Especially with this season needing to wrap up both the Night King and the titular "game" in 6 episodes. So between rushing through everything just to be able to say they gave us an ending, and no longer having George's books to force them into not just taking the plot armor and good guys always win trope route, they're delivering something disappointingly typical. In the end they just never had the endurance to finish the grand work they started, especially once they no longer had the steady hand of the books to guide them... Then again, George doesn't seem to have the endurance or imagination to satisfyingly finish the work either... Or finish it at all, more than likely. So maybe we should be grateful that we're going to get *an* ending, even if it's not a particularly *good* ending.

I did rewatch all episodes since April and it definitely doesn't look that strong a second time around. Around season 4, beginning of 5, I often wanted to fast forward, especially with all the boring Jon or Sansa stuff. Has anyone ever counted how much his screen time increased? In the beginning, all characters got about the same time. Even Littlefinger or Varys had some segments. Now it's the "Jon and Dany and their dragons + Ninja Arya" show. It turned from a smart show to a dumb show that panders to the lowest common denominator.

Ed Snark training to avenge her family and take the names off her list, not to defeat the night king. It could have been done, but characters like Bran and Jon who’s arc we’ve been invested in for 8 years, and those arcs have been pushed by the night king, were stood there with their dicks in their hands and don’t actually do anything to stop him. Instead it’s someone who had no stake in this plot until this episode. It’s unsatisfying and Jon and Bran (who’s been training his abilities for 8 years to be glorified bait) arcs have essentially been completed

It lasted 20 minutes for us, the episode takes place during the whole night (5-6 hours of darkness?). The storytelling is so bad that the fights actually last for much shorter. There is no way in hell that all the charachters that are alive and well at dawn actually fought for hours. Just look at how much they are outnumbered. The only way to survive death would have been for them to hide somewhere or get all the whites to come through one door or one passage and kill them one by one.

I've always been a live and let live kind of guy, but watching people clap like seals for an episode that thoroughly undermined Jon's arc while effectively torpedoing any hope of a competent, satisfying conclusion to the show--and for no better reason than to subvert expectations with shameless girl power--makes me want to strangle every blue checkmark on Twitter. I started ASoIaF when I was 16, shortly after the release of A Storm of Swords; I'm 34 now and Martin has added a whole two books to the series in that time. Cersie didn't send her army north and has another 20,000 troops. And Dany is not happy. Sansa is not handing over the North and Dany is not happy. Jon is challenging her claim to the throne, and Dany is not happy. Jamie raved about how unbeatable the Dothraki were. They were her 'blood' riders. A bond much more personal than mere troops. Now they are gone, snuffed out for no reason or gain or anything. Then the Unsullied are sacrificed, for very little. There has never been a been a series of such incompetent tactics, ever, in the history of the entire universe. It's a farce. Daenerys is shown to have brain of a peanut and is not fit to rule a sandpit let alone an empire.

What is funny to me is that they even show us one more time how unkillable the NK is in this very episode. Daenerys is torching him with dragonfire and it does exactly nothing to him, while later he get stabbed and killed by valyrian steel dagger (that is most likely deadly to WWs because it was forged with dragonfire) is absolutely hilarious to me. The winter is coming bullshit was apparently just a subplot, well it wasn't supposed to be until D&D decided to ignore everything and play a little prank just to surprise us. The moral lesson before was that the conquest to power resulted in suffering and deaths of loved ones, and that everyone should unite and focus on the real threat instead. Now they decide to end the show with a conquest to power. Fantastic writing and storytelling.

The main plot was ALWAYS "who" will take the Iron Throne and rule the 7 Kingdoms of Westeros. Cersei Lannister's line delivered to Ned Stark back in 1/07, & I quote, "When you play the game of thrones, you ether win, or you die. There is no middle ground." Many of the cast from Little Finger, Lady Ollena, Stannis, & Varys, to Tyrion, Tywin, Dany & Sansa, have ALL had intertwined deep discussions about WHO is the best for the good of the Realm & should have claim to the Iron Throne. The fandom has lost sight of this. Also, if they really thought that GOT was going to go till the bitter end Finale with the Night King running amok terrorizing ALL of Westeros, then they haven't been paying attention to all the weapons Gentry made of Valyrian steel & Dragonglass. 😏 I can't believe ALL the cry babies bitching over Arya being clever & quick, taking out the NK. Jon Snow took out Ramsey Bolton in the last big battle, so let somebody else have their moment. It is an ensemble cast. The series doesn't say Staring Kit Harrington. Jon Snow had his moment, but the Night King outsmarted him, "Oh Boohoo!" 😭 At least is was a Stark that took him out.

It could also have worked if the two plots were combined, as in say the Night King succeeds steamrolling all over the North and he marches his army far south into Riverlands while the protagonists (I won't call them heroes :)) are fleeing before them (fly you fools! :)) then the whole of Westeros sees the glory of the White Walkers, they need to come up with something big or they're screwed so they resolve to force Cersei to submit to unite all available forces then the final battle takes place. If the resolution with Night King was more drawn out in time it would have left a bigger impact, it would rise the stakes significantly.

Worst part is that as the Night King walked towards Brann I thought "oh shit, something is going to happen, he is going to kneel before him or something, oh shit now is the moment something cool happens... wait Arya... no... oh thank God he grabbed her... no... no... WTF is this... no... this can't be...". My only hope is that somehow they fix this in the last three episodes but I doubt they will, feminist fan service is all there is to this last season, as in the previous two seasons.

@@andresanchez728 what makes that even worse is that the Night King made a conscious effort to be gentle when he was catching her. The show had already established he's the most physically powerful being on the planet. He threw a giant ice javelin hundreds of feet in the air to kill a dragon with scales like armor. He should have crushed her throat when he caught her. The fact that he didn't shows her plot armor.
