HBO's Game of Thrones came to an end on Sunday with a lackluster finale. Here's why I think season 8 could have been better.

The passion for the show was lost, you can tell. The writers are saying that they loved it until the very end... But that is more than likely just to save face. Think about it. I mean really think about it. Why would such an epic series suddenly lost its heart so fast? It starts from the core. 8 years (only on tv, I am sure of that it took much longer than 8 years to start production and prop building) is a very long time to spend on a project. It is completely normal that passion can be lost, if it is all these writers/directors ever saw for nearly a decade. It is fatigue. What should have probably happened was a change of people. Change the unpassionate people to people who are passionate about the franchise.

Jon Snow, son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, true King of Westeros and proclaimed the King in the North ... the only one who could ever unite North and South. Hero of so many battles it makes one's head swim. The son of a Targaryen and a Stark ... he is the LITERAL Song of Ice and Fire in the flesh. This guy turns lovestruck punk in the end? The saddest part for me is, I find myself incapable of rewatching the show. I LOVED having GoT-Nights with friends, revisiting the early seasons, just finding comfort in the (in my opinion) greatest show ever made. Season 8 ruined that for me and many friends I've talked to about it. It just feels.. pointless. All the emotional investment in so many storylines was pointless. Hell, many storylines were pointless. Ist feels hollow. GoT became kind of irrelevant and all that because of a forced finale.

I did not notice any of these scandals and bad things that people get upset about. I think everything was rather consistent most of the time. I think many of these scandals are artifically made to be bigger than they actually are. I was not influenced by any other opions when I watched it, and I didn't mind the Dorne story, and I didn't mind the final season or the ending. In fact, I think that D/aene'rys going mad made perfect sense in the end, and there was hints at this all throughout the previous sea'sons. If you ask me, season 1 was the best and season 2 was the worst because it introduced a bunch of new characters but failed to make them interessting (they would only become more interesting in later seasons).

The occasional bit of stupidity is fine, but Cersei suffering exactly 0 consequences from blowing up the most holy site of the majority religion of Westeros, murdering a beloved queen and religious leader along with members of her own family and various other houses (most likely) was the first unforgivably ridiculous thing that happened. Especially in a show that was all about politics and consequences. Blowing up the Sept was a beautifully Cersei thing to do, but when I realized the show was presenting no consequences for what was one of the most extreme acts of terrorism in Westerosi history, I was done. @@corylong5808 seeing glimpse of the future doesn't matter. Bran can't see into the future, he can see into the past and present but not future- at least the show never sets up that he can see into the future. a master of whisperers is pointless for someone like Bran who can see everything that transpires by using the Wirwood network or warging into various birds and animals to eavesdrop on any potential enemies. if you can literally be anywhere and see anywhere at any given time why would you need someone to spy for you? I think the line was just supposed to be a joke between Bran and the small council, I mean Bran isn't gonna be doing anything anyway considering Tyrion has to do all the work to keep the kingdom together as punishment for....? refusing to serve Danny after she committed mass genocide? I mean it's kind of left ambiguous as to why he is being punished to begin with considering he had no part in Danny's plan to destroy kings landing and was in fact the only one pushing the importance on not killing anyone who surrendered, if anyone should be punished it should be the unsullied, Dothraki, and Northmen would killed and raped innocent people while Danny attacked. If anything Sansa should be in hot water considering she proclaimed herself Queen of the North and is thus responsible for their actions since John isn't Warden anymore, but nothing comes of it for some reason, why did Sansa not get punished?? everyone but Bran, Sam, Arya and Tyrion don't know the truth about who John is so they would still see him as a Stark which means a Stark killed their queen and they're just ok with it as long as John is sent to the wall.... that makes no sense especially when Grey Worm knew Sansa was against Danny from the beginning.

Plus they had to appease the unsullied and Dothraki, and apparently they're all so stupid that they buy "we're gonna punish him by making him Hand of the King for life" as a punishment. Grey Worm also bought "send Jon to take the black, again" which is weird because an episode earlier, the Unsullied were all too happy to murder every innocent in sight for Misandei's murder but when Daenerys is killed he just calmly takes Jon, the person actually responsible for the murder, in custody.

Remember how Littlefinger was the most intricately scheming man in Westeros? He was literally the architect of basically the past 20 odd years of events in the political world of the show. Then he's killed because Bran the psychic shows up and tells everyone what he's been up to. The writers wanted to push him in the direction that he was blinded by "love" in season 7, that this was his downfall. This could've made him a tragic character, his love for Catelyn/Sansa was his redeeming quality after all. They meddled two drives, one being ambition and the other love for Sansa, when they should have chosen one: - Ambitious LF would have left Winterfell the minute Bran arrived/his manipulation failed. There was no benefit of staying around except for orbiting Sansa, who this LF sees as a puppet to use and dispose of. - "In love" LF would've rebuild Sansa's trust instead of manipulating her. Remember, this LF wants her on the throne next to him, so he plays the long game and has to maintain a good relationship with her. This is more of the character GRRM had envisioned when writing LF; someone who knows how to read the room and seems non-threatening.

I always felt like Littlefinger was so in love with Catelyn Stark that he'd treat her daughters like his own. And when Bran tells Littlefinger that "Chaos is a ladder" Littlefinger should have known immediately that his scheming was over and it was time for him to leave. Sky Walker Although I would agree with the 3rd episode being too dark, that was a choice they made, not an accident. Even though I think the decision they made was a little overkill. As far as the cups and bottles, that is so insignificant and is just a slight oversight, and to say that those small mistakes in the bottles and Starbucks take anything away from the actual production would be false. With Dany, what she did was more of a threat to her rule than Jon Ahdunnwanett Snow could ever be. She botched her one chance of a relatively bloodless coup, and decided on a political maneuver that simply doesn't add up. When the characters' (and by extension, the writers') stupidity is more of a threat than any external force, the external force falls flat. The Night King and the White Walkers fell flat (to a certain degree), because the army of the living fucked up at almost every single step, and Dany's war and political struggle fell flat, because she ended up doing more harm to her cause than literally anyone else. I think without the source to draw on anymore they just sat down and said, "How can we get to the end GRRM laid out?" and went with the most efficient route, story and character development be damned. Another review put it this way. Martin is a gardener. He plants character seeds and sees where they go. Great for color and texture, not great for efficiency in storytelling. D&D are plot driven. They know the desired end before they set off. Great for continuity and efficiency, not so great for character development. This is why they were great at adapting the books but terrible at doing it on their own. Martin created the texture, they molded it. When left with no texture to mold, a plot-driven writer find the most efficient way to get from A to B. Bottom line. D&D are great screenwriters, crap storytellers. Martin is a great storyteller, (would be a) crap screenwriter. The two elements need each other to craft a compelling show. Once one was gone the other floundered and failed.

D&D as good screenwriters? I never saw any evidence of that. They seemed like whizbang Wonder Boys adept at selling themselves to get big-bucks financing. But when GRRM's books ran out and our two whizbangs had to actually take over and CREATE a story (beginning with Season Five) they were left standing around with their willies in their hands, as grandpa used to say.

@Zedul
@Zedul 5 жыл бұрын
It's in the appendixes. Aragon levied heavy taxes the first 50 years of his reign to pay for a massive reconstruction campaign. He restored dozens of cities. He reunited the Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor, and became the first High King of the reunited kingdom. He made Pippin the defacto ruler of the North Kingdom, and a lot of northern men resented the power he gave to the Thain of the Shire, as there was quite a bit of racism against halflings. He had to ride north in a show of force to put his point across. He was the first king in over a thousand years to create embassies with all the houses of the Dwarves, and with the remaining Elves and sought to quell racial strife between them... he was a tireless diplomat in that regard. He expanded his borders to take back territory Gondor lost in the past, and fought several more wars with Harad and Umbar to settle matters in the south and east. He even passed land grant policies to instigate people from Rhûn and Umbar to settle in Mordor. He made a new surname, Telcontar, and he had a son and 3 daughters with Arwen. He died 120 years later, and his wife, an immortal elf, basically starved herself to death wandering the empty forests of Lorien, her grandmother's old Kingdom (Galadriel was her grandma). She cast herself down on a green hill and never got up. Because she was an elf, she doesn't get to go to the human afterlife, and her death was very very bitter as a result. Now, that is a proper bittersweet ending...

Consider how often the cameras focussed on her face after she either witnesses a death or kills someone herself. Even from neds death onward her expressions every season toward death change from shock into a general "meh". So her slaughter of the Frey's isn't shocking. People aren't mad that Dany went mad queen; the issue is that they reaaaaallly did not push that point beyond a few instances of her being cruel to cruel people. If they spent all of season 6 and 7 showing Dany becoming ruthless and murderous, and careless of collateral damage, then this would be fine.

I binged all 8 seasons in 3 weeks, so I was acutely aware of changes form season to season. The first 4-5 seasons are outstanding (though I've started digging into the books and I think I'll be more blown away by the books) and the character arks and development felt so natural. Jaime Lannisters transformation as an example was done perfectly and he's such a well rounded character. His regression and the manner of which it was dealt with summed up season 8, pops to Kings Landing completely unopposed after being freed and in record time. No encounters with bandits, no confrontations. He then arrives and takes out a deadly Euron with one hand - finds Cersei and they die in the rubble. It's all just convenient and given the long arc of his change in personality and the discovering of his story - that regression was just an afterthought ... much like season 8's finish. Defenders are right "I didnt get the ending I wanted" - I would have happily taken the ending they gave, if they'd taken the time to sell it to me properly. Justify the ending

David Coleman can you summarize the last four pages of LOTR? I’ve seen the movies and love them but ik the books are pretty different from the movies. Any way you could explain?

@@diegogelinck8665 I sort of agree, but not quite. Frodo gives Bag End to Sam, which doesn't happen in the movies. The point where Sam realises Frodo is leaving for good is handled with far greater poignancy in the books. Finally, when Sam, Merry and Pippin stand listening to the sea, they are listening to the last echoes of the Creation described in the first chapter of the Silmarillion [the sound of water]. It bookends the entire mythology. It's one of those moments where the written word conveys more than film. For me, anyway.

I really agree with you. The DETAILS were IMPORTANT and what took the show to a new level. The lack of detail in later seasons just killed off the magic. Where did the Dothraki go?? Who IS lord of the Stormlands? I can bet you it wasn't just sitting empty when Gendry got promoted.

For me, the biggest letdown is never finding out the true backstory of the White Walkers, their motivations, and their relationship to dragons. You know, the ice and fire concept. Instead, we’re left with the old tired fantasy trope of the pure evil villain after world domination only to be stopped by the good guys just in time. I truly thought the entire show was based on some idea of a grey world(as opposed to black and white) where the duality of good and evil was not so easily understood and yet a balance exists somewhere you might not be looking. Instead we got an absolute mess where nothing really makes sense.

So, it has the same problem that Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 had? Don't get me wrong, there's a lot great with the show, but that's more present in the front half than the rear. Unfortunately, I don't see GOT getting a "FMA: Brotherhood" treatment anytime soon, if at all.

Dude Fullmetal Alchemist was perfect from beginning to end, I’d say it’s better than brotherhood, but both versions we’re great.

Brotherhood honestly felt rushed compared to the original. Spoilers for a 16 year old anime.... Like, in the original I genuinely cried after the death of Hughes but in Brotherhood we barely even met him before he was gone. Also the Xing characters from the manga who were added in Brotherhood just did nothing for me

@@wererat42 I feel like Hughes death was warranted in brotherhood and since I actually watched brotherhood with no prior knowledge of what happened in the original I wasn't expecting it and felt sad. And to the contrary I loved the characters from xing, and to me they just added to the show.

@@slothful2039 The butcher made me sympathize with the boys, Nina made me furious and weepy, and Hughes made me feel sad in the original run. They took the time to let us get to know these characters, which Brotherhood didn't. Character driven stories need 'filler', but all parts of the story need to pay off in some way. Brotherhood doesn't have that (which is why I enjoy it less than the original run despite the original going stupid) and neither does GoT in the latter half.

People are very quick to critique D&D, and that's valid... But people seem to forget that Martin isn't without his part in this whole mess. I mean does anybody remember how painful a drop-off it was to go from Storm of Swords to Feast for Crows? And then waiting 6 years for Dance With Dragons? And then him writing a plethora of other ASOIAF novelas in the 8 years since, and yet still no winds of Winter??? That would be why you have no Bran in season 5. That's where Martin left his story. OH! And apparently the major character endings shown in the show are basically what Martin had intended. So yeah...Bran on the Iron Throne was Martin's idea. Martin is just as much to blame for this crap shoot as D&D. I think he's deliberately waiting to finish the books because he knows that however he ends the series, it won't work out the way he wants it. He got to big for his breeches, PLUS I think he's realizing that the post-modernist bent he placed in the tone of the series works against epic fantasy counter-tone--particularly as you bring the story to a close. And though he may critique Tolkien's philosophy in the Lord of the Rings (yes, I know he still has tremendous respect for Tolkien and takes LOTR for what it is), Tolkien still did in 3 books what Martin cannot do in 20--and really that's only one book if you take into account that Tolkien was rather adamant about the entire series being one unified work. (Side note: even when the book was divided due to paper shortage, they were still all released WITHIN A SINGLE YEAR). Back to the present, I think it would be a cowardly move for Martin to just go, "HAHA! JK. This is how I really want to end it" and retcon the books after having already divulged the ending to D&D. The suspicious side of me thinks he waited this long on purpose to see how his proposed conclusion would fly. TL;DR: Martin tanked this show too.

Martin can end his story the same way as long as he fucking develops the characters and the story into that payoff. Daenerys went mad because fuck we have to. Bran becomes king even though he did fuck all for the entire season. I'll stop there but in my opinion the decisions themselves aren't a problem to me, the lacl of development and storytelling was. Because it was mad rushed.

That is what i think to he wanted to subvert fantasy troops and make something as timeless as lotr but just ended up failling as he has no idea how to end his story or how to even get theire What makes me think this way is the fact that he is willing to work on anything now except for the thing that actually matters even he admitted that he is struggling with wow his world got so big and so complexe even for him

I agree. The ending we got was Martin outline. You can see in his themes that Martin would want Bran to be king because knowledge and the big picture were what made knigdoms last in his world. Also Bran is like an author. The series ended too quickly and should have never been picked up until Martin finished his series.
