The Battle of the Goldroad is an engagement in Daenerys Targaryen's war for Westeros in which Daenerys Targaryen's Dothraki horde ambushed the combined Lannister-Tarly field army and supply train as it was returning east to King's Landing after successfully sacking Highgarden. It was the first time that Daenerys used her dragons in battle in Westeros, riding Drogon in combat.

Haven't rewatched GoT since the series ended but this was one of the last truly excellent moments in the show in my opinion, the tension building up as the Dorthraki charged, and then the moment Drogon appeared, still makes the hairs on the back of my neck tingle.

Also, with the fact that Dragons weren't seen in Westeros for hundreds of years - the latter Targaryens never had real dragons, only the symbols of dragons on their house's sigil. Other Lannisters dismissed Daenerys's dragons as some "exotic curiosities" from Essos and nothing more. And now, with that in mind, imagine seeing an actual dragon come out of the sky - real, full-sized, fire-breathing just like from centuries ago.

She could have wiped all of the Seven Kingdoms with ease and killed Cersei as soon as she got her dragon, but that wouldn't make for a compelling and interesting story. Furthermore, it is as much practicality and production limits that makes this. Animating people is hard. That's why the burning humans are real. They're stuntmen being set on fire. This already broke the record for most actors on fire at one time. It would have been far too dangerous to do this with 100+ people lined up. Effects don't look as good as the real deal.

History tends to repeat itself. 300 years ago, House Lannister and House Gardner joined forces to throw Aegon and his sisters back into the narrow sea. With 55,000 men they marched and they burned on the field of fire, falling to the might of the three dragons of House Targaryen. Then 300 years later, House Lannister and House Tarly joined forces for the same reason and they met with the same results.

I mean, first lets go over how scouting in a Medieval European army actually works. You would basically have small parties of people armed and armored as mounted infantry. They usually were sent out to raid or to simply gather information and report back. In virtually all cases, these scouts encounter other scouts and never the main element of the opposing army. That doesn't work against an army consisting entirely of cavalry. At the strategic level, the Mongols can move their entire army in the time it takes for a scout to return to their army and bring back follow-up reconnaissance. At the tactical level, Mongol scouts were the most dangerous and skilled cavalrymen in human history. They would be dispersed over massive areas, with each rider having multiple horses at his disposal. Furthermore, they could accurately shoot their compound bows while mounted at a gallop to hit horse-sized targets up to five hundred meters away (purported). Enemy scouts very often could not escape them. A single Mongol scout can kill an entire scouting party because he can out ride and out shoot them over the course of a pursuit, which could last many hours. Hell, you don't even need to kill the scouts. Just tire out or injure their horses. Anyhow, the writers could have dropped a throwaway line about how the outriders have not reported back yet, but in all honesty, this seems similar to how the Mongols took armies by surprise on the march.

One thing I liked is that the Dothraki knew their blades couldn't penetrate armor, so they aimed for throats. So much better than shows and movies where swords can just stab right through plate and chain. Uh no, they can't. THAT'S WHY THEY WEAR PLATE AND CHAIN! If it can't stop a sword then there's no reason to waste money equipping troops with it.

@@cadian122 I think that the sheer force of numbers would've broken through the Lannister and Tarly lines. Jaime and Randyll had 10,000 men at their command. Daenerys sent all of her Dothraki bloodriders, which numbered 100,000 horsemen. Sure, the heavily armored infantry would hold for a while. But the Dothraki don't really care about losses too much and they would probably eventually break through even without Daenerys's dragon

Then it would be hard to manage many cities at once. With each city needing resources depending on travel and communication If a disaster happens on one of the cities that needs aid, communication would be needed but again. Valyria empire is vast so it takes that long This comment is long enough so, In summary: If the Valyrian enpire takes over most of the world. The Lannister army just got done after it’s surprise teleport attack on Highgarden, and then Daenerys surprise attacks them by teleporting all 100,000 of her Dothraki from Dragonstone with nobody noticing. There’s also the fact that Westerosi cavalry doesn’t seem to exist anymore post Battle of the Bastards.

We see Tywin and his army rush out from Harrenhal earlier in the show, and it makes sense that Stannis wouldn’t know how close they are to the city since he’s launching a naval assault. Meanwhile, Jaime marches all the way to Casterly Rock, gathers up the entire garrison, and then marched through the Westerlands and across the vast territory of the Reach to suddenly storm Highgarden without any of the numerous castles in-between sending warning.

The problem is it is too late. There is no time for you to quickly get on a horse and desert as far as possible: the Dorthrakis army are going to swamp you over; the dragon is far more quicker than you and your horse. One of the most epic. I love the dragon scenes at the end of seasons 5 and 6, as well as the retaking of Meereen. Then there are scenes like Hearthome, and the Blackwater Bay. Heck, I even liked the first half of The Bells before they decided that Daenerys having a crazy father was enough foreshadowing by itself to justify her just losing it.

My suspension of disbelieve was destroyed instantly and it didn’t get better with Jon Snow surviving 100% deadly Situations again and again and again. Topped by Sansa not telling Jon about the knights of the Vale for dramatic purposes. And instead of him being angry, he thanked her… For me, it was one of the worst, most nonsensical scenes in the show, only topped by the battles for Winterfell and Kingslanding in Season 8.

I love how Ser Bronn of House Pay Me never even considers running away. He tells Jaime to go and not for a second does he think of bolting himself. This was back when they were still writing Bronn to have actual character development, when he very symbolically abandons his gold and nearly gets incinerated to save Jaime. He could have just cut and run. A purely selfish mercenary would have. At this point Bronn was risking his life and his position again and again, for Tyrion and Jaime alike, with no reward beyond not letting his friends get themselves killed. But then D&D just abandoned him and character arcs in general.

Worth considering that said supplies slowing down the Lannisters is what enabled her ambush, and the primary advantage of the Dothraki is their mobility. Trying to move that many supplies might've been impractical. Destroying the supplies in a pinch denies the enemy their use anyway. Share the misery and such.

Daenerys actually liked Lady Olenna Tyrell. Her age-old wit, strong strategic mind impressed her. She's got nothing to lose coz everything she had was taken away from her in the most unthinkable way possibly. So when Daenerys heard the news of her ending she become furious. And its not the Lannister army tricking her that made her furious but the fact that the Lannister's already destroyed everything Lady Tyrell had but still they choose a cowards path of attacking & looting a helpless old woman drowned in sorrow who's day's are numbered.

Would have been so much better if the Dothraki just stopped before hitting the defensive line. Dothraki just starring at them or maybe still chanting. Leaving Jamie stunned and bewildered. “What are they doing? Why’d they stop?” Then all of a sudden Jamie hears Drogon’s scream coming in from the flank. Burning the majority of the defensive line in one pass. That’s how I would have done it.
