Sam, I can give you three reasons why they are making a Splatoon 3. 1) $$$ Money. This game is HUGE in Japan. And it's audience is the U.S. is growing 2) They want to evolve the series and make it a major Esports title. They said on twitter that they are adding new movement options like a dive roll and a jump attack. People play this game for mainly the multiplayer and the Splatfests. New Splatfests = more attention on social media. 3) To fill out Nintendo's lineup and get a new, original game in the storefront. Nintendo knows people will sour if all they do is release port after port. It's already starting to happen. I don't see your argument over splitting the fan base. Call of Duty releases every year and it's always a top seller. It will be 4 years since Splatoon 2. People are ready for an upgrade. If they make enough meaningful changes people will want to play it. New movement options + New gear + New abilities + New single player story + New Specials + New maps and New Splatfests ??? Better than old ports and more old ports. Nintendo doesn't really do serialized games that often (as in direct sequels). But if you want to complain about serialization, that's just a video game problem in general and not a Nintendo one.

Totally agree with the brown games and SS was unique. But thats not a good reason to like SS. Skyward Sword and the Wii is the reason I abandoned Nintendo for the first couple of years of the Wii U.

Being a fan of Skyward Sword I was already buckling in to hear the IGN crew shit on this game and just brush it off but I can’t stand by Sam’s slander of saying it “doesn’t have any foundationally amazing revelations about the history of Zelda.” Hard disagree, it literally explains why the reincarnations of Zelda Link and essentially Ganon keep existing in all the games. We get a lot of info of how the master sword came to be at all. Even Skyloft and the Loftwings show why the royal hylian crest has wings on it. Could go on for awhile but SS being the first in the timeline gave it a huge opportunity for some great info on the history of Zelda!

People just go with the narrative that Skyward Sword is trash, but thats not true at all. Its a pretty good game, and the dungeons were really fun. It has a 93 on Metacritic, and 8.1 user score. And IGN gave a it a 10/10. Most people didnt even play it and they just say its bad because thats the narrative around it.

Skyward Sword is basically perfecting the past Zelda formula. I guess if you've played every single one then it's frustrating that it wasn't replicating the "it" games of 2011 (such as Skyrim). But for anyone going into SS as an entry into the Zelda franchise, it literally mastered the charm of that world and the dungeon design. And I disagree entirely about the story being bad because the story is sparse. Zeldas function as folklore or sagas. It uses archetypes and broad strokes to tell tales of heroism and good triumphing over evil. It doesn't need more. That being said, it's a cool kid thing to shit all over SS. It's a delightful children's game, not a difficult adult game.

So I totally get some criticism of skyward sword, and I don't think it deserved 10/10 but it's wayyyy too hated on. It's a good 3d Zelda not perfect but honestly none of them are, not even breath of the wild. The ending is way too long but the game leading up to the repetitive backtracking is pretty awesome Zelda fare. At the time in 2011 it was so exciting to even get a 3d Zelda. I don't like motion control stuff at all but it actually worked well here and I felt more immersive swing the sword and shield. The story I think is even better than breath of the wild, the world, although not as open as they made it seem, has immersion and tons of secrets. With the interesting items and powers some of the puzzles and boss battles are super memorable and innovative. I'd rank it somewhere in the top 5 Zelda games and I'm super excited to see it in HD at last the way it was always meant to be. Noone knocks on mario galaxy for being non HD but for some reason this one always gets the shaft.

Dudes, Skyward Sword is way better than I think most of you seem to get or acknowledge. Yeah, that start takes far too long to take the training wheels off, but once you get past that it's generally pretty great (apart from one of two needless fetch quests nearer the end). But, imo, it's actually one of the best Zelda games, and only one of two I've ever bothered to complete (which says a lot to me). I think people are going to give it more credit when it comes around again on Switch (although the sheer freedom in Breath of the Wild might take away from it a little in modern times).

It has the best story of any Zelda game and some of the best dungeons. And now people can't complain about the motion controls. I found the motion controls interesting yet a bit frustrating after awhile. Maybe if some of the easier enemies didn't rely on it so much it would be a bit more forgiving.

Skyward Sword is an amazing game, the motion controls worked great (unless you're bad), and there were crazy mechanics, scripted events and enemies around every corner. The lack of overworld really screws up the pacing though and brought the game down, it makes no sense how undeveloped the Sky section is after the openess of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

Wii U to Switch is the same as Game Cube was to Wii --Basically the same guts, with an added function This is going to be a bit harsh and a bit hyperbolic - but everyone that bought a Wii U got a slap in the face from Nintendo, they dropped the support on that basically the day the Switch came out. There's no reason any of the Switch games couldn't be on Wii U, and because they decided to change the formfactor and restrict purchases, our Wii U games wouldn't work on this system. Now, had the Wii U done well.... No doubt we would have Odyssey, Mario Golf, and others on it.

Sam you're mistaken about Skyward Sword's timeline significance. The Master Sword origin is not as important as that game revealing that Zelda is the reincarnation of their universes Goddess in Hylian/human form. A lot of cool universe building blocks are laid out in that game be it the bird motif of the Hylian Shield, why their world is always under threat, why the Master Sword can "speak" to Link. It's rightfully considered the worst Zelda game from a game design perspective, but its narrative contributions are pretty neat. BotW even uses new lore that Skyward established.

Triangle Strategy is because of the 3 angles to a problem: Morale, Liberty and Utility. In the demo you get to experience that after the first battle. Supposedly, according to how you decide to solve a situation, the story changes and so does the characters that join you.

I understand people being disappointed with the direct, but remember this is only first half of the year. And for me it was pretty dope. I put over 300 hours into Xenoblade 2, So this was the most excited I've been for a Smash character for a while. I love Splatoon since the Wii U, so knowing 3 is coming is awesome, though I wish it was this year. I haven't played Skyward Sword since it came out and Zelda is my favorite series of all time, so I'm down, some of the best dungeons in any Zelda for real though. I am also really hype for the Age of Calamity DLC, already pre-ordered. Project naughty Triangle or whatever it's called looks awesome, loved Octo Path.

Lifelong Zelda player here and very much disagree with anti-motion control disdain for SS. That WAS the entire appeal for the game. I believe the dislike is basically people who don't like motion controls wanting to change the game. And that just won't work with SS. That's WHY the rest of the game aspects were mediocre compared to other Zelda games because the main focus WAS the motion controls gameplay. Take away that and what's left is a lackluster Zelda game. Aside from being a good Zelda story. Nothing against people who don't like motion controls, mind you. Just saying you can't take away the main gameplay element from a game and expect it to be a better game. 🤷‍♂️

Not favoring the Skyward Sword controls, or the added padding in the back have is completely understandable. What I don't understand is the extreme love/hate that the game gets in general. I can't stand the padding in Twilight Princess and I think the entire game is mostly soulless, depressing, and boring, but I still played it to completion and enjoyed some aspects. SS on the other hand, while a bit linear is 1000 times more enjoyable than TP. The characters have more depth, the dungeons are more engaging, the items don't feel like throwaway one offs, the controls are unique (and worked flawlessly for me), the villain was enjoyable for once rather than being Ganon AGAIN. I want another game with the motion controls of Skyward Sword. I want a hundred more games like that. It sucks that it will never happen.

I'm not a "hater" of SS, but I don't think it's a good game. I played it to completion twice. Not only did I have no issues with the controls, I actually like the controls, I liked the visuals, the story was well presented, and the dungeons were some of the best in the 3D games. So with all that said, what could be the problem? Pacing. Exploration (lack of). Hand-holding. The game has no breaks. It's just go, go, go as the game is constantly telling you exactly where to go and what to do when you get there. There are no genuine discoveries that the player has to make on their own. It's the complete opposite of Breath of the Wild.

@@nyrisj That's another thing that I find odd...Breath of the Wild comes up in nearly every case when making an argument for why Skyward Sword is not good. I'm all for comparing games and I can agree that tastes change over time, but then why don't we hear people say Ocarina of Time is awful because of the water temple? Or complain about the lack of any real discoveries when 'exploring' Hyrule field? "Breath of the Wild gave exploration depth, so now OoT is hot trash!". While not as extreme as Fi, Navi does hold your hand, but still OoT is beloved. I'm not trying to pick on OoT or BotW, but I feel SS gets a lot more shit when you compare it to newer games, so why don't we do it for older titles as well?

Excite Truck was a really fun game. I played the crap out of that game. There's a bit of a learning curve for the controls, but once you get it, it is pure arcade-style joy. The sense of speed is awesome, and doing tricks off of massive jumps to get boosts is super fun. I don't know about "favorite game of all time" material, but that 8 out of 10 score holds up in my opinion.

1:08:33 Also, it was a lunch title and there are never a ton of good games to play on a new system, so early adopters had a lot of time to play that game because it was one of the only few good ones on a brand new Nintendo system for a certain period of time. I know that's my case, and I grabbed Excite Bots as soon as it came out because I had already played and loved Excite Truck (and I wasn't 10 at the time, more like twice that, and I played that game almost exclusively in single player) I wouldn't say it's my favorite game of all time, because racing isn't even in my favorite genres, but both Excite games on Wii are among, if the THE best arcade racing games I've ever played. On a side note, this is probably the Nintendo-exclusive franchise that I want to see revived the most. I don't want Mario Kart 9, I want a new Excite game.

We could've even used the gamepad like a radar for that completely useless 'dowse' feature lol Heck.. with how late in the Wii life cycle this game came out, I'm actually surprised they didn't delay it a bit further to simultaneously lunch the HD version on the Wii U. That would've single handedly turn the Wii U into a much different story than the sad affair it turned out to be. Weird watching Game Scoop before Beyond. Lol. As for the ND, it was pretty bad. We haven’t got a regular ND in a long while. Games like MP4, Bayonetta 3, and BotW 2 haven’t had any news. Bayonetta 3 hasn’t had news since it was announced. MP4 hasn’t had news since it was moved to Retro 2 years ago. So instead of getting news or release dates for those games we get 2 games coming in 2022. At least a year out but most likely longed. One didn’t even have an official name. I mean I get e3 of some sort is coming in 4 months. Or summer of games. But Nintendo didn’t announce crap last year. This ND could have had fans pumped for what is coming. Instead we get another sequel with no date, one Zelda announcement, and the rest was old news. Disappointing to say the least.

Yeah I don't get all the hate over this and the direct. Well actually I do get it. It has been over a year and a half since we got one, so people wanted and expected too much. Always happens. I love Splatoon so I am pumped for Splatoon 3. Yeah it sucks that it's a year away. But Mario Golf looks amazing and I'm also pumped for No More Heroes 3.

@@monkeyspice2010 I’ll get Mario Golf. But I feel that Splatoon 3 could have been shown towards the end of the year. Why now? I mean if it follows the last game’s release it won’t be out until next summer. Nintendo didn’t need to announce another franchise game that doesn’t have a release date. The rest of these announcements could have been mini directs. There is 3 games people want some news that they are still being worked on and we haven’t seen or heard from them in close to 2 years. I mean look at it this way, Splatoon 3 got a release year. BotW 2 had a similar trailer showing and we haven’t heard anything. Bayonetta 3 has been 4 years since it was announced as a game for the Switch. I get people were excited because it was the first ND in over a year and half. But the content wasn’t worth all that time with nothing. Especially the Zelda bs.

I still have hope that they will do a Zelda 35th celebration and release Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD or something along those lines. If they don't, it's a major misstep. You can't celebrate one game franchise's anniversary and just pretend like the other one doesn't exist. (Well I guess you can if it's Metroid rofl)

@@WEK-kh8gd I'm not denying it has a dark theme, but the dark world has typically been a parallel dimension in the same area. Termina is a whole new location. Before Hyrule Historia came out 10yrs after Majora's Mask I never heard anyone calling it a parallel world to Hyrule. This seems like made up lore after the fact to cover that the developers simply had incredibly tight timelines and reused a lot of assets from OOT

So, for example, Skyward Sword is released on Wii, then re-released on Switch, and then re-re-released on the next system. They're just going to keep releasing the same games on every new system forever. I understand why but it's funny when compared to PC where you buy a game once and that's it.

What the hell is going on with IGN and this “Skyward sword hate”? I mean c’mon guys. I think I was one of the few people who used to defend you and now I’m changing sides! They gave Skyward sword a 10/10 back then and all of the sudden everyone at IGN seems to hate it! It is an amazing game and can’t wait to re play it.
