I am so glad that Mat pointed out the huge genderfication of games. I'm a woman, and although I do enjoy Stardew Valley and the Sims 4, I ADORE Skyrim, Fallout 4, and The Long Dark. They were all marketed as male games, and TLD only had a male option to play as. But, I grew up with Skyrim, GTA V, Fallout games, and all different kinds of fighting games like Mortal Kombat and the like. I am so happy, and I hope that his assumption with the gaming market changing is true. It would make my whole existence to know that my siblings and my kids wont be subjected to American propaganda. I am even hopeful that this will help other companies realize that they can get more money and have less hassle, simply be not gendering their products, experiences, and companies as a whole.

I don't believe it's a forced split, just statistics on who plays those games more. Even with the arena of valor game it's still a 54-46 split which is pretty close. I don't believe anyone is saying this game is only for a certain gender, the stats are just stating who plays it more.

The main gripe with this video is Mat being "surprised" that other countries exist, but rather, I think this video just goes to show that the English speaking side of youtube has been boxed in by the big three markets (japan, us, and europe) and I feel it's a valuable lesson. I'm Jamaican, and so much of my experience being mostly socialized through the internet primes me to be being oriented to think that way, because the english speaking audience just, tends not to interact with other regions and I think that a big name mentioning this will help better globalize the youtube experience and let all of us smaller countries feel a little bit more seen online.
@Lion10104
@Lion10104 2 жыл бұрын
It more has to do with the fact that we have better games and freedoms that allow us to have a diverse range of games that fit our personal preferences. Meanwhile in those countries they are heavily restricted as to what they can play as well as the availability of games, so all the people who download games only have a limited pool to choose from and hence there being that many downloads of those games as well as a more equal gender balance in it, due to them not having a choice as to what they can to pick that fits their personal preferences. Imagine the only vegetable in your grocery store are potatoes, well your going to have a disproportionate amount of people buying potatoes if you just look at the data and compare it to another country that has a diverse range of vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers etc.

The more i learn about game preferences between men and women, the more i feel its about in which social enviroments they play games. And then the trends make more sense quick. Men play games in their "man cave" on their computers or consoles. Wimen play games in more open social situations, thus more couch co-op or mobile phone focused. This also leads to the fitting trends i see with gender distributions in games, more then the game type itsself.

The game is popular in Asia and it's always the most profitable games except that time when their parent company Tencent(who also own Riot) launch pubg. The funny thing is Honor of King is a copycat of LoL before they bought Riot and then they got copy by Mobile Legend which also a successful game in Asia/SEA and beaten their own games like LoL wildrift(China+International) and Arena of Valor combined which is supposed to tackle Mobile moba outside of china.

And though people are playing freefire because of they have phones with 2gb ram, that's changing as more and more games are coming to mobile. Apex legends mobile nearly looks like apex legend pc and people with 3gb ram or more prefer more graphics heavy games like CODM or pubgm/BGMI that's why freefire Dev recently made a high end version of freefire.

I wouldnt say we categorized who should play which games. What DID happen is that companies looked who their biggest audience was and then started to exclusivly maket to that group. Thats all. Its companies trying to market efficiently. Which of course ends up with them not adjusting later, because they influence who plays their games. Those that they market. Its a self fullfilling loop. Not a malicious one. Nor an intentional decission of any one person or group. So no discrimination. Just the result of self fullfilling prophicies, and the laziness to expand your consumer bases, in favour of going for what is known to work. Which is also why indy studios have been finding so much success and love. Its all connected and the same reason. Companies getting comfy and only doing what is safe and known to work. No risks taken or evolutions tried.

@@sparcey8092 well, there is a science to sampling, and some parts of society have gotten pretty good at figuring it out, but I feel the game industry is quite far behind on that still, and the marketing, particularly in mobile games, is a great example, where the target is relatively small but they use a huge blanket to get to and find it, and it's almost all about the money, in sort of a sneaky way. MatPat has talked about that a bit before, but I feel like it kind of applies here too, just in a different way. I know nothing is going to be perfect, but I feel we can at least try a little bit harder, and I find it interesting to see what we as Americans are often blind to because of our media consumption. Cool! I wrote a master thesis on this and got an A. Although those kinds of videos were what inspired me to choose this theme in the first place.

I can't believe no one knows much about freefire outside of certain countries. As a person who lives in south asia, I skipped the craze over it while getting convinced to atleast try it by siblings, cousins, etc(Did not work) . I never understood the craze. Matpatt made me learn something again.

Kinda a relief really, people had been trash talking mobile games, while it's the only games we can enjoy without breaking the bank. I do agree that mobile games are not as good in quality, but cmon, it angers me when they just blindly hating

My answer from the start: Mobile games and China. The amount of population there is changing everything now that asia caught up to europe and north america. Both china and india. But china is the famous one. Not to mention, mobile games are so much more accessable then other ways of gaming. And theres so much less regulations on it. So perfect for economic growth.
