We've talked before about the science behind Fire Pokemon. Today I am turning my Theorist eye towards a different type - Electric! Throughout the series we see Pikachu zap Ash and many others with its attacks. It got me wondering - how powerful is Pikachu? Or any Electric type? Well, when you look at the science, the answer may SHOCK you!

So basically in order to be realistic, Thunder Type physical moves should do way more damage than special moves and Thunder Type physical moves should be more common too, and all of them should cause recoil although the physical ones with more than 70 power should probably cause guaranteed paralysis. Interesting. You'd have a "polarizing" type whose moves are100% either god tier or straight garbage.

Does this mean Japanese doesn't have a word for 100,000 and they're basically saying 10 10,000? I remember watching a video of a Japanese school student trying to count (in English), and he called 20 "ten ten", and every so often the video would cut back to him, showing larger numbers. When the numbers got to like 100 or higher, at one point he takes a deep breath and goes "ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten!"

@@rax1899 I never said anything about what it was in Japanese? I said it was a Japanese student speaking English. He just used tens for every multiple of ten (ten ten for 20, ten ten ten for 30) and when it went back to him later, there was a really long number, so he took a breath and went "ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten!" while everyone else was giggling about it.

As an electrical technician i can say: you got a lot wrong here. First the human skin has a resistance of 1000 ohms. Also if the cheeks of pikachu where negatively charged, then so would be the whole Pikachu. Also you don't know if the Pikachu itself may be an insulator and only the cheeks are a conductor. But the main thing you got wrong, is about how lightnings work. It's true that a voltage of 30000 volts per centimeter is needed to overcome the resistance of air, but once it's ionized, the resistance drops massively. Going by your logic, lightnings would be harmless

I'd also like to think that as an electric Pokemon charges up its next attack, it is effectively ionizing a route in the air between it and it's opponent. Using extra "hidden" energy to charge up the distance between it and its target, like an invisible radioactive beam. Then when it has charged up enough, it releases the electricity and then the sparks do the rest. This is why I also believe the electricity can curve and/or strike multiple opponents at once.

Having only melee range attacks as a pokemon thats not really a heavy type or at least suit for boxing/whatever because or their, well, body, length of arms, shape of legs etc makes them basically useless unless you throw them st another pokemon with no range attacks so they can maybe shock while taking a bone cracking punch to the face. Otherwise theyre at a disadvantage when it comes to defending against ranged attacks if they cant fly or move quickly enough for dodging to be easy and the length of their arms to catch the other pokemon with not matter

Minecraft theory: I have a theory about the blazes. Wither skeletons are made of carbon as they drop coal on death. They most likely were fossilized in soul sand and netherrack and eventually gained the properties that allow netherrack to burn forever. Then some of them got hit by a ghast and they lit on fire as well as gaining the ghasts’ ability to fly and shoot fireballs becoming blazes. due to the fact that they were made of fossilized coal and netherrack they burn forever and can shoot weak fireballs at targets. They also live in the nether fortresses because they used to be the ancient builders. Edit:The spawners could be a result of the builders experiments with life and death. After blazes lived in the fortresses for a while their essence went into the spawners and they started appearing from them. Edit 2: magma cubes could be slimes brought into the nether.

So, if we reverse this and say that electric Pokémon have to be doing *some* kind of effective attack (since they do actually KO other Pokémon), could it be that we have the mechanics of their power wrong? Maybe the power isn’t to “shoot lightning,” but to ionize air? So, the power is the ability to reduce the resistance of air to nothing, and thus allow them to turn what should be minor shocks into major weapons?

I've always assumed that Electric type attacks that operate at range, Such as Thunderbolt, act a lot light lightning strikes. Essentially, an electric-type pokemon is able to separate positive and negative charged particles in the air through the same way wind is able to do it, but on a more accurate level. It's less of an electric shock, and more of a targeted lighting bolt. Essentially, imagine a weaponized Tesla-coil where you can charge the particles in the air around a specific target and then let loose a bolt of lightning that will strike the target with SHOCKING accuracy.

Matpat is the kind of KZbinr that will claim that you can water bend by controlling the earth's magnetic field, but conveniently doesn't mention that pokemon would easily be able to control electricity if they could control earth's magnetic fields in the same way.

There's also the idea Pikachu, Raichu and Pichu have insulating flesh around their electric sacs, meaning it would be much harder for them to shock themselves as long as there isn't a conductor leading into those sacs (such as nerves). Pichu, being the baby version, would have less developed insulation and that would explain why he takes recoil damage from his own electric attacks. In regards to being able to change the charge around a target, that would seem to fall under a psychic type ability which would suggest that electric and psychic pokemon share a distant ancestor (not quite as far as Mew though).

Sans is Ness only offended weak people. The fact is either you thought it was really cool or dumb, but only weak people insulted Matt for making it. They might make jokes with their friends but they wouldn't be highly triggered. This is actually another stupid pokemon episode where Matt applies real science to a show about magically fictional creatures.(which I get is a thing he does, but it doesn't make it less stupid the theory is directly not canon and can be rejected on the plot of the games and anime alone.) The differnce is I think it's stupid, but I don't think Matt is stupid for making it. I think it's a waste of time, but if it gets him views and new subs then it was probably worth it for him.

You can indeed direct where a lightning strike goes, and we do it for research and even the U.S. Military has tested lightning-based weapons like the MARAUDER plasma railgun. The main way is to use a rocket trailing a wire. As the rocket flies up, the wire provides a channel of least resistance for the lightning to strike. Its pretty cool, and the process vaporizes the wire creating a giant green line of plasma. The other way to direct a strike is to ionize a channel of air. Fire can ionize pockets of air, but the military tested high-power Lasers to ionize a channel of air to guide lightning. A literal Lightning Beam! So in the case of Pokemon, perhaps electric type pokemon can ionize channels of air to guide their lightning strikes, or fire out extended whiskers that act like wires.

hot wings Thing is, what if Electric types partially ionized the air before they do their lightning move. The resistance would be lower and therefore the attack would be more damaging. in RL of course there's no way to aim that so it going to go which ever way it forks off like a lightning bolt but in Pokemon we have psychic moves so if he could just aim that ionized channel towards someone as they charge up they'd at least be aiming in the right direction to hit them rather than it being totally random bases on air density, flow, and resistance.

Personal theory: Electric type pokémon shoot superconductive 'magic' pellets, that have basically negative resistance and therefor lead the electricity at a much higher shock then a static shock. These would make it possible to shock the opponant to faint and not to kill, while still being strong enough to actually make them faint. It doesn't sound nearly as stupid when you consider the psychic type. Pokémon is magic, not science

Also, now a year later, I now know that electricity is part of the inseperable concept of electromagnetism, so if any electric type pokemon can manipulate electricity, they can also manipulate magnetism. So new suggestion: they use the magnetism part to _attract_ iron atoms or small molecules, which are either polarised or electrically charged, into a path the electricity could follow. Now they use the magnetism part to create a magnetic field that guides an amount of electric *energy* towards the closest molecules to their target and make them move in relation to each other. That causes an electric current and is quickly attatched to the target, shocking it by the amount of electric current that was caused by the magnetised particles moving. If this sounds too complicated, remember that these are magical beings which are just born with this power. They probably would use their power in the same intuitive way as birds fly and we don't have a clue how that works phisically speaking. Besides, as it turns out, transferring electric energy through a magnetic field is not affected by electrical resistance and electricity providers have been giving us our electricity this way for decades. Though still, I am a very dumb individual and I can only vaquely recap what I learned in physics classes. Take this with a grain of salt, I could be entirely wrong about every aspect. Edit: typos

@@michaelcherokee8906 Actually, the very fact that electric Pokémon work can be seen as evidence for this guy's theory. Matpat just spent a whole theory explaining how electric Pokémon can't shoot lightning... but they do. So something has to be allowing them to do it, and Vintetia's theory fits the bill.

Pure water (which I assume the water types produce) cannot conduct electricity. However, if we assume the water produced is not pure, and contains some ionic charge such that it can conduct, then you may have a point. In fact, the higher the density of conductive dissolved metal ions in solution, would mean the easiest flow of charge in the water. There is, unfortunately, one drawback to this theory. There are two methods of getting “electrified water” from point A to B: 1) A single disjointed squirt or 2) A continuous stream. Neither of which would yield much result for Lanturn. In case 1, we have that Lanturn shoots out an electrically charged squirt of water. Assuming it doesn’t immediately discharge onto himself, the electricity would dissipate into the metal ions and be absorbed near instantly and, hence, the target Pokémon will get 0 zaps, just get a little splash. In case 2, we have a constant stream of water between Lanturn and the target. In order for this to work, you would need to have a massive conductivity in the water and hope to god the other Pokémon is more positively charged than Lanturn. If the target was close in charge, say, another electric Pokémon, the Voltage between Lanturn and the target would be low, and so, very little current will flow from A to B. This effect will become stronger, the more positive the enemy becomes, so rock and steel types, watch out. Overall, by providing a constant conductive medium between the attacker and the target, the attack behaves, essentially, like how Matt described a stun gun. And, with a high enough voltage, this could do some serious damage.

this actually explains how Denki' Kaminaris quirk downside works While yes he can build up enough to shock someone else, he's still shocking himself. Saaaay- his negitive charge is in his heart and lungs, that means the closest internal organs, his stomach and brain, can get fried by his quirk Which explains how he short circuits his brain, and how he might even feel sick afterwards. Matpat unintentionally gave me the ability to understand my favorite mha character's quirk

Well, if the Pokémon world works differently and air, there does not have any resistance then Pikachu could possibly be able to target his electricity, especially if he dies a mechanism in his cheeks that allows him to target his opponent and if his body is also slightly negatively charged, it would make sense that he also would not get shocked. You probably should’ve added these to your calculations these can make a heck of a lot of a difference.
