The best time for negotiations is when the other side is in a position of desperation and willing to agree with all of your terms. (ie. Second Punic war, battle of Zama, 202 BC)

Regarding your first point, there is also value for the other side, in that you are potentially offering a resource (payment for a product or service), when it is convenient to the vendor. There is value in this fact, and this could be marketed accordingly.

Wow! So that's what I encountered as an inexperienced 1st-time car buyer. I didn't really want the new car and so I was able to play 2 car dealerships against 1 another until I received the price and car with the amenities I wanted. I had no idea at such a young age, I was using an aspect of game theory. Thanks for sharing this knowledge.

What is the best approach when having to renegotiate the same contract on a yearly basis? I work in industrial insurance. Policy period is usually one year. So every year I have to negotiate the same contract with the same people. Making a last minute take it or leave it offer might work one year, but can backfire the next year.

"You'll probably get a better deal if you're not desperate." A 3 second statement somehow stretched out to a 3 minute video. Aren't these videos suppose to be experts using their rigorous study and exceptional experience to share important things the laymen doesn't know? Hmm I wonder what Chris Voss would say about this. That "take it or leave it" approach is pretty much forcing your counterpart into a corner. Chris Voss has always been advocating for a compassionate approach that comforts your counterpart, because pressuring them may lead to them completely closing up. So... yeah... I don't know what's correct here.

too simplistic; just saying that you are not in a hurry does not mean that you do not need the car right now. Bluffing is more important, not giving away the fact that you need the car right now is the key. Conversing, knowing everything about the person who wants a raise, for instance do they have high debt levels, thus can not afford to lose their job, will give you the leverage to say no when they ask for a raise. Also if you do not get the salary raise now, it means that a subsequent raise in the future will need to be of great amounts to offset the money you lost by not getting the raise a long time ago.
@Philosific6 жыл бұрын
David Boson i think you should watch the video over. HE CLEARLY SAID THAT YOU SHOULD NOT WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE. What he state was not bluffing. The two are quite different.
