I own hundreds games in steam. Empyrion is one of my most favorite games in my steam library. I spent hundreds hours to play it with my son. We traveled the space and built our own spaceship. And we try others' wonderful blueprints, ships, and houses. This is an amazing game.

And the POIs, don't forget the death trap POI and AI controlled ship interior which the reviewer did not show. Virtually all of that content is made from the ground up by the players, so Empyrion to me is a player's game, with content by players who instead of griping for content like some people, just go ahead and add it.

You missed one of the biggest aspects of the game, attacking and taking over POIs. Also base building. There's also some great scenarios (mods) on the Workshop that add even more content.
@GameAdvisors
@GameAdvisors 2 жыл бұрын
I was unaware of the scenario mods sadly but I'm glad to here they have that. As far as taking POIS and such we only allow our selves 24 hours of play time to review a game. This is because have to put out a consistent amount of content and in 99% of cases with in 24hours you have seen most if not all of what a game has to offer in my personal experience. I played space engineers for about a 100 hours before attempting Empyrion so I felt as if I had a good grasp on the game genera and concepts before going into it. That being said from all the comments I've read it appears that this game has a lot more end game content then what we expected, that being said if the game doesn't draw you in quickly enough then your bound to lose players before you even get close to that point. If anything I would consider increase the score by a point or two but with out playing the "end game content" such as taking POI's I sadly have no right to give my opinion on that part of the game. To close of this comment I will simply say that we gave the game the rating we felt it deserved after 24 hours of gameplay, based not only on our own opinions but on that which we feel the "Average Gamer" will have in the initial 24hour experience. If you have any further questions please feel free to reach out to me directly on our discord or chat with our community in the general discord chat. Thank you so much for your comment I love constructive criticism. You my friend are "More Than Worth The Cost!"

@@GameAdvisors And what mark would you give to Space Engineers? Maybe review it? Have played both of them and SE compared to this lacks content as a whole. If comparing tutorials, then Empyreon tries to introduce players to all of its mechanics, SE tutorial on the other hand tries to get you off the tutorial as fast as possible and then just leaves you hannging, also they don't even have water. I agree with some cons and yes bugs sometimes are fun breaking. But overall this review just doesn't feel like you spent 20h in it. You didn't mention factions each with its own design, POIs and even territories of space they control. Some are even made by players and developers added them as official. Also reputation system allows you to get friendly with the "evil" empire and that gives even more content. So I dont know dude just feels like this review is half assed....

@@GameAdvisors Watching this video was tough, it seemed you found every "con" but didn't get to find many of the "pro's" of the game. I understand having a limited time to play to generate content so it's inevitable that your occasionally going to miss out on some of a game. This review really seemed like you bought a new car with only three tires and took it on a road trip to test it and didn't like the bumpy ride. As you noted in your reply you didn't see about scenario mods, but also I just want to mention the Blueprint factory also. Ever wanted to fly an X-Wing Fighter, somebody has built one in Empyrion and you can download it from Steam, think you can build a better X-Wing, go for it and upload it to Steam for others to get and try. Want the Battlestar Galactica, a Tie Fighter, a Stargate Pyramid ship, small ships, large ships, giant ships, entire space stations and full game re-works. They are on the Blueprint shop that people far more creative than me have uploaded that you can get and play with. Please understand I am not throwing rocks at you, your videos are quite good and helpful. My comments here are just to give a little extra info to anybody on the fence about buying the game. I just want to say there is much more to the game than Game Advisor had the chance to cover. Closing out my rant, sorry about this, yes the game has all the cons and quirks mentioned in the video, but every time Elyeon releases an update, the game gets better.

This was a weird review. I’ve put in 1700ish hours into this game and it is still fun to play with each update. No is should not be out of early access but it is definitely worth the $20 if you want a game that you can really be a part of.

Thank you so much for this comment Zaistars. That is certainly a impressive number of hours and I'm sure the game is enjoyable if your willing to invest a very large amount of time into it. Unfortunately we are limited to the first 24 hours of gameplay when it comes to our reviews. That all being said one of the biggest concerns I've herd from other players such as my self is that the game is focused largely on late game content and there fore the first 24 hours aren't really to enjoyable and turns away a large amount of players. Is that something you would agree with?

@@GameAdvisors Thanks for the response! On the contrary, the early and mid game are my favorite parts. The real challenge and fun is when I don’t have phenomenal Cosmic Power. While I can still be taken out if I don’t pay attention to the radar or an errant rocket hits a vulnerable part of my ship, that’s the real fun. When I hit late game and can take out the most powerful enemy ships is when i start to lose interest. As for the first 24 hours, I’m still having tons of fun during that time. Early game is where the survival aspect is really potent because of starting out with limited ability to take and deal damage! There are still huge amounts of late game content for those who really enjoy that aspect, but that content doesn’t eclipse early-to-mid.

@@GameAdvisors Personally after playing 6 years of it i actually love the beginning survival gameplay and really wish they would add more really difficult starter planets -- i;ve actually never got into the late (or even middle) gameplay... though have for the first time got into modding --- its also unfair to really criticise the multiplayer which i hate in any game... That said the tutorial is soo annoying at the moment and way too wordy -- though slowly improving - the developers are really not good at low wordage storytelling --- sigh -- That said some of the mods like reorged eden really improve the game and give loads of things to do mid-game--- and the addition of permanent player ,ade factions has also vastly improved the livelnesss of the world/galaxy recently -- so bit buggy but improving at an immense rate.

I have 55 hours in it and I feel I've seen it all. Me and my friends build a base, some fighters, some tanks, a big ship and we jumped the system and the next system is basically the same. We are missing a ton of different block shapes and fighting through dungeons or bases is quite boring after the 4th time. There's no mystery, no story. On to the next one. I would LOVE Sea of Thieves in Space at this point.

After almost 3.5k hours in the game I noticed there is a ton that you missed. One there are almost 1,600 dedicated servers and at least half of them are our scenarios of one state or another. Setting up your own server is no more or less complicated than setting up a Minecraft server or a server for any other port forwarding is mandatory for any server setup within your local network system in order for people to connect from the outside. The base game as of itself has a few scenarios and a bunch of missions you can do along with almost 20,000 star systems you can explore. If you move on to a scenario like reforged Eden project Eden they have a lot more mission-based questline stuff to do. The tutorial is not mandatory and I don't really recommend it unless you're brand new to the game and need to learn how to use the game but that is a first time only thing and from there on is unneeded. The ground combat from what I saw in your video all you actually looked at was fighting AI creatures but there is also an abundance of abandoned POIs filled with massive amounts of AI, infected ZRX, horrors nightmares, and investors along with some of the scorpions and spiders. Besides being roughly 15 different factions that you can either become friendly or go to war with having a multitude of AI. There are several different play styles you can adapt to I would say the amount of game content you actually looked through is a little bit lacking and I would suggest talking to a few people who have over a thousand hours in the game that you are looking through and have them take you on a walk-through/explanation on a bunch of advanced game mechanics for future videos may or may not be helpful to you

This review was like taking a bite of the bread they give at a restaurant, and judging the entire menu by it. Empyrion is a HUGE game. In fact, it has everything everyone wants in other space games all in one. Base building, ship building, and even having a crew on a capital ship, where in battle, they actually need to man stations, refill ammo fuel etc. Actually a 4hr tutorial isn't long enough. People who have thousands of hours are still learning to play. This review did a terrible undeserved disservice to this game and the 5 developers who listen to the space gaming community. What a shame.

This game is an 8/10 at minimum, you have a purpose to build and evolve, unlike other games where you build and explore for no other reason than showing off. The game can be played completely single player, unlike other games and where it's more mp focused. This game is way better than space engineers when it comes to being a proper game, and not just a sandbox for multiplayer. The worst thing about this game is the horrible optimisation, sometimes it goes to 24 fps just being near a native village, and that is terrible.

Ellyon already said this game isn't about the combat so much as it is to building. If ya want a basic ship sure.. but ya wanna make it nice, ya add deco and pipes.. I never had to add a third party to join a server unless ya meant a scenario like Reforged Eden (ya forget to mention that) it's a full galaxy lol a gazillion stars.. buggy? Lol I've seen more bugs in Warzone and Cold War than I did in Empyrion. Granted the tutorial is long but it's a combo of teaching and main missions. Here is what you and others are missing. Games like this are 90's games that came with a booklet.. there are no manuel's. It comes down the the devs to show us how to play. Instead maybe look at it this way. Wow the devs blessed us with a step by step to figure out this. See, most people have no patience anymore. They want tangent lad game style. This game is made so you waste your time gathering and building. A sv for instance. It's a 360 game.. you need a thruster for ever direction. They put this in the game. I'm not knocking your review. But of the many games out there. They put literally everything in this game. It's a hard juggle. And each content patch comes new missions. For example WoW does this. We pay for each release.. the devs here don't do that.. I'm not a "fanboy" persay (I would be if they added crouch lol) than you for your review but ya a bit harsh for the amount of content that's given for this

I can understand and respect your view point Luke however we are limited in the time we have to review a game. We allow our selves 24 hours which is (with out giving any names) 22-23 more hours then most other game reviewers. This is actually why we started up this channel as we felt the same way you did. That all being said anything more then 24 hours, with real life knocking on the door every 5 seconds, we wouldn't be able to put out more then a video every 2 weeks. Just to give you an example here so you know I'm not bsing you we spend 24 hours playing, 2-4 hours writing a script / bullet points, 3-4 hours recording audio takes, then any where from 8-20 hours editing the videos. There is some other minor things in there but that's all the big stuff. If we add all that up into one amount that's 37 man hours in order to put out a review in ideal conditions. We also have many other life responsibility's such as our regular jobs. With all that being said I genuinely appreciate your comment and we will do better in trying to make sure we get all the possible viewpoints and experiences a game has to offer in the future as long as its with in our play time.

This is why reviews after playing for limited hours is not ideal for the best information to the viewer. Yes the tutorial is long, but at the same time it also helps you play. The stuff you do is not lost and does a great jo of showing you how to get started. Not to mention you can skip the tutorial or you can skip any steps you want. Playing with your friends is very easy. The confusing part is that it says local coop, this is in fact not "local". Just click start local coop and then it will open up a dedicated server automatically, your friends can join. The main point of this game is building ships and bases. If you are looking for a heavy combat game this is not it. The combat is okay but not main focus. They still support this game today and are constantly working on the game. That alone is great for a developer of a $20 game. This game is worth $20 all day if you are in to space and building. I do apricate your time reviewing the game and overall it was a okay review. FYI the club entrance is up the stairs on the front, took me a min to find it too.

This game is far superior to Space Engineers. I used to play a lot of SE. There's zero PvE in that game. What's the point of building a cool ship or base if there's nothing to do with it? The SE devs tried to implement some PvE, but like everything else they do, it was done half-assed and eventually given up on. Empyrion on the other hand has tons of PvE and bases are raided by NPCs. When it comes to the survival game mode, SE doesn't even begin to compare with Empyrion. And even if you want to play creative mode, at least in Empyrion your creations can later be used in survival. There's just nothing to do with your creations in SE.

just for note, every new feature has a 99% chance to be broken. Which is follwed by the fix, than fix the fix, than fix the fix the fix. Maybe than you will get a half way working feature, or at least a state where you can workaround the bugs. After 1000+ hours gameplay i can say NOTHING gets fixed fully. I have seen versions of the game where it was fully broken, and insted of fixing it they added sun flares. The game as of today is in a shape, where building/constructors are broken, placed blocks getting transparent, ships are merging on collision, enemy ships are moving after death, so u cant loot them, SVs are useless, HVs are useless. Bases are useless... Steel, Hardened Steel, Combat Steel blocks are useless. You can beat dreadnoughts with a single plastic starter CV, but not with a dreadnought. Galaxy feels empty and dead, you find the same things over and over again. UI has over one second hardcoded lag. (Try turn on/off shields. or turrents continue shooting dead enemies..)

Empyrion clearly has its main strength on creativity and exploration. And on that aspect its one of the best games around. The devs still keep updating the game, working with the community creatively and constructively. Just a few days ago they released an update improving graphics, especially terrain detail, as well as redesigning and rebalancing some things, adding the first voiceovers. The game is even more immersive and depending on your settings challenging enough even for experienced players. But let me be clear once more: if you don't enjoy mining, design, building and exploration this game might not be for you. But then again, sandbox survival might not be your thing.

I agree that there are lots of issues with EGS, many of which you mentioned. That said, it takes far more than 24 hours in the game to find all the nuances of it. If you were testing Vanilla (what is provided by Eleon), then you still have not touched what all is there to do. If you play one of the scenarios, like Reforged Eden, which is much harder and provides a hugely expanded storyline, I think you will find it more challenging to play. I have over 6000 hours into the game now and it still has a long way to go before it is truly *finished*, but I enjoy it immensely. Please invest a bit more time into it and see if your view changes a bit. I bought it years ago. Many years ago. It's still being upgraded for free after all this time. My only gripe is the loss of saves during upgrades sometimes. Start again, again. I would predict around 100 to 500 hours of playtime before you see enough. That is without multiplayer. or the alternative scenarios. I've never got that far. It's a slightly steep starting curve, I play the tutorial each time just to get some extra experience, it's not that bad...

I don't think this review is fair. For the cost to game play ratio, I've gotten 300+ hours out of this game and just getting started. So, if that's the measure this game should cost at least $300 to $400. It isn't as buggy as your average Bethesda game and this is a small independent studio. However, I have experienced game ending bugs like no other game I've played. Still, nothing that reverting to a previous save can't solve. Although I did have a bug that required me to go back 7 hours of aalsaves because the bug was stored in the save file. But I did get it resolved. It really comes down to how much you like build and survive games. The game is far deeper than you are going to see in the first 100 hours. Combat is average. Story is okay although I haven't finished the main story line. I do find the Zirax constantly attacking your base a bit annoying but at least I haven't had a problem with that on the starter moons. The biggest problem with the game is that starting out can be frustrating if you don't know how the game works. But inevitably, when I think there is a messed up game mechanic, it turns out that it's just me not understanding how the game works. For example, I built a harvester ship that had no storage capacity. Later I found out that you have to add storage capacity. Or almost freezing to death in space, I later found out you have to upgrade your suit because space is cold. The depth of this game is you need to warm up your space craft before you jump in just like in real life. I feel like there's a lot more to learn and discover after 300+ hours. Basically, if you liked Minecraft, this is 1000 times better. If you didn't like Minecraft you probably won't like this game.

The people of the community also agree that the vanilla tutorial/story missions are lack luster and too drawn out. Many of the scenario mods fix this issue. I realize you are on a schedule to release content, which is totally understandable. Playing Empyrion for 24 hours, 3 or 4 of which was in the story mission, doesn't even scratch the surface. The "combat" you experienced appeared to be shooting food. It is the equivalent of killing a bunny while fighting on the front lines in WWII. In addition to using your ships to assault ground based facilities guarded by turrets and troops, there is capital ship vs. capital ship space combat around planets for the rights to mine certain resources. There are many different factions for you to contest for territory and resources. There is an entire trading system that allows you to become rich without fighting if you wish. Plus, much, much more. I'm sorry you didn't get the opportunity to enjoy all this game has to offer. At $20, it is one of the best values on steam, IMO. I've played it for 3,000+ hours, and with one modded scenario in particular, Reforged Eden, I have not experienced all the content. I know many, many people who have played it for longer than I have. I honestly hope you get an opportunity to revisit this game in detail.

Hey first off thank you so much for the feed back. Thank you also for understanding we have a limited amount of time. Out of curiosity at what point does the game start to become fun and include the "combat" that your talking about. I've heard so many things about the end game but when you have to push through dozens of hours of "not fun" content and killing of "food" when does the average player get to start enjoying the game? 50 hours? 100 hours? Our reviews are catered towards the "average" gamer who doesn't want to spend dozens if not hundreds of hours to start figuring out if the game that they purchased is fun or not for them. None the less I genuinely appreciate the comment and feedback.

@@GameAdvisors Enemy (Zirax) facilities are on all starting planets. A player could attack them within the first few hours. The facilities are normally guarded by Zirax foot patrols that you can engage with if you are on foot. However, a much safer way to engage with them is to build either a small vessel (sv) or a hover vessel (hv). These can be built with small amounts of basic resources such as copper, iron, and silicon. If an average player understands this, they can begin assaulting Zirax facilities within a few hours, maybe 2-4 depending. Even this still falls into the category of early game. A player doesn't begin to approach end game until they've fought enough to assemble enough resources to build a massive capital ship able to fight enemy massive capital ships. One reason new players don't do this is because, like you said, the tutorial intro missions do a horrible job of giving the player clearly defined goals. Nor does the into mission demonstrate the vast possibilities the game has to offer. It doesn't hint at space combat between massive capital ships or conducting attacks on huge space stations. We, the community, have complained about the starter missions for a long time. Although they have changed, they are still inadequate. Many of us believe this is the main reason the game isn't as popular as it deserves to be. As you said, people play it for a couple of hours cutting down some trees and picking some berries without understanding what they are capable of doing in the game. It is a real shame.

@@GameAdvisors I hate that I am spamming up your comment section, but I thought of a better way to sum up the game. It presents you with problems that you must over come through design and building. For example, you start with an inefficient hand drill and realize you need to gather more efficiently, so you figure out how to build a hover miner. Now that you can gather a decent amount of materials your problem becomes where do I store them and get organized. You decide to build a base. Once you build a base, Zirax attack it. Now you need to redesign your base to defend against the attacks. How do I scout the planet to see what is here? Design and build a small vessel to quickly scout the planet. Now you've found Zirax facilities that you suspect have juicy loot. How do you make their loot yours? Design and build some sort of weaponized craft, etc... This problem solving through design is the part of the game that keeps people coming back. Again, sorry for the text walls.

Sorry? Playing with a friend is as simply as choosing a starting location, or resuming a game using the drop down for "coop". There are a few settings, but they don't concern port or difficult IT options. Punch in a name, choose how many people can play max, run. The other guys then choose "join" game, and when you are friends on Steam, you will instantly find the game and can join without ANY trouble whatsoever. As for the fun: if you are of the type of who wants to get taken by the hand and kicked down a pipeline of missions, this is not the game for you. There are missions, and some are quite interesting, but what makes this game unique is that you have total freedom. Freedom comes with responsibility, in the real world just as in gaming. In this case it comes with the responsibility to not be a boring follow-the-signs type, but make it your own. To understand how amazing this game truly is, all you need to do is look at the workshop. Compare it to comparable games like "Planet Nomads" for instance (also an awesome game btw.), and you will see how much it inspires gamers. Not only is there an insane amount of stuff players designed and built, but the level of quality is something else too. EGS is one of the best balanced games, if not the best balanced games of this kind of genre I know. It does take more than 24 hours, and a certain character to appreciate it though. Finally, the graphics are not on a level of what say Star Citizen (I am one) offers, but they are not at all shabby, so I really don't understand that claim. Bugs? Every once in a while I get an "internal error occurred", I click "continue" and all is fine. In well over 2000 hours of gameplay this game hasn't completely crashed on me once.

Actually, i am pretty sure most empyrion players would say it is quite a deep and enjoyable game despite it not having so much detail in combat. For me personally, though i'm sure most would reach the same conclusion, this game's main purpose is to challenge ones resourcefulness and creativity under pressure. It is a game where you go through a lot of pain to gather resources to build amazing bases that if you are not very careful can be lost in an almost instant, therefore playing with your stress tolerance. It is a thinker's game, mental in it's nature and has the quality of strengthening your overall acceptance of loss and resistance to a harsh reality. Very few games behave like this. Like chess, basically graphics are null (the classic chess not the fancy 3d games that were built on it) but the complexity of it's mechanics (which seem simple at first) enhances the brainpower in many aspects of life, from focus to problem-solving and acceptance of loss. Pure therapy. This game is actually healthy added to the fact that it gives you a tens of thousands of stars randomly generated map for every new game (which means you can end up having trillions of random galaxy maps to expand into and feed and train your artistic side, with breathtaking space scenes) Then there are the steam Scenarios that players like to build (which act basically like mods) out of which to present the two dudes working on it have kept it updated and full of fire and it is still the main winner of the throne of scenarios out there, by giving the game the extra oomph it needs. So overall score should at least be an 8/10 if not 9 if the pros and cons list would include these other points i just mentioned.

I have over 6k hours in this game, and you wont find the ground combat till later game, and i am wondering if you even made lvl 25 "max lvl" in that time. As for the tutorial i cant say, i don't think i have ever used it, like you said just watch some you tube, there are great videos on the game. On game servers, you can rent your own for as little as 5$ a month, or there are approx 1500 public servers to play on, and some of them are very good. Just my 2 cents, I will say the game is getting a little old after 6k hours and i don't play a lot except after new content comes out then i play a good bit for 2 to 4 weeks and then wait for more content. P.S. you really need to check out some of the player made scenarios like Eden or Reforged, they add SO MUCH to the game.

There's TONS of games that do this and I personally don't think it's that odd considering you can just single player. Not exactly a fair review in my opinion, let alone a complete one. I'm a casual (but somewhat dedicated) player myself with 36 hours into the game and yah... While building in survival mode can be a challenge, what about creative mode? You can actually design in creative, save your work and import that in a fair way back into your survival game. That accounts for something too I think. Or what about crafting? I was pretty impressed when I noticed that the crafting devices could actually "deep craft": so automatically creating all required items for you in order to build stuff. Not to mention the rather excessive options you have to build your bases; it's not just the wide amount of decorative blocks, but what about all the logic circuitry you can add to your bases in order to "run" them? I for one was actually pretty surprised to see that my food items could go rotten, but even more so when I discovered that all that rotten goo could actually be put to good use as well! I can't help be convinced that you guys didn't even manage to scratch the surface of all this, no offense.

If you don't like it, you will drop out within a couple of hours because, it doesn't look that good, the GUI and explanations are horrible - you will have to look on line to have game features explained to you, you had no idea what to do. If you like it you will look beyond the graphics, slog up the learning curve until you understand it and discover a gem of a game. As per this review, the exploration is off the charts and very rewarding.

I agree with much that was said in this review. There is a custom scenario called Reforged Eden. It combines 2 custom scenarios Reforged Galaxy and Project Eden, the authors of those 2 scenarios are now collaborating on Reforged Eden. Without Reforged Eden, which out performs the vanilla game in every measurable way, this game would fizzle away to nothing. Eleon can't keep up with 2 authors that make the game better than they could have imagined, and therein lies the problem with Emyprion.

Sure, graphics isn't best, BUT it's best explore, survive and build game with open space, most planets aren't that big, BUT DAWG YOU GOT ENTIRE SOLAR SYSTEMS THERE And let's not forget that it have only 15GB, nowdays we have games with like 80GB what is nothing else than nice looking car with crappy engine and shit like that Empyrion is definitely worth that 20€ and for what it offers...it's very complex game...where you have to think and plan in advance a lot

In few words just to describe graphics, physics and objects in this game it is kind of an advanced minecraft. I spent 3000 thousand hours, but I played on the biggest server. But now I finally gave up, because whatever you do, whatever mod you create everything eventually comes to the same end, this game is limited by itself. ALL worlds are the same and it is really boring and nothing to do there eventually even with mods. And another huge problem is a number of bugs, what is increasing with every, so called update. There are tons of bugs, most of them never been fixed since first releases of this game. To say short, for example you plan some operation, you know what to do, you know ALL bugs in this game. Ok, you think you come and do what you plannned and go back with loot or smth. Well well well...In most cases every operation finishes with recovering yourself, what take you extra from few hours to infinity, means you should contact admins. This is due to tons of bugs. You can not be sure in anything in this game. You can die, you can stuck, you can lose everything, you can be disconnected right in the most crucial moment like engaging fight, you can fall through the surface every minute, just due to tons never fixed bugs. Yes, most of them never been fixed. While devs cheerfully report with every update, look we made waves in water, now it is animated. Hell yeah, lets start with a fact that even still water have sick and critical bugs that affect whole play...And this is neverending process. Devs ignore bugs, but do some really silly pathetic upgrades about graphics or some absolutely useless stuff. Btw, graphics itself is nothing with realistics, same as physics. Colours are really sick and acid. Darkness is weird. It is 3D game, but you will be constantly frustrated even with orientation. Actually I played about 3000 hours and I finally gave up. I had two accs and gifted them to my friends. I forgot this game with no any regrets. Excellent idea and worsr realisation ever. Yes, you can try this game due to great idea, but more you play, more frustrated and dissapointed you feel. This game should be still in alpha and should be for free at this stage.

Graphics are pretty dated... character models are pretty bad too. The optimization argument for the graphics in nonsensical. The client handles the the graphics, so they can be as high end as possible, where you only need to transmit where things are located for multiplayer. So, if you're at 640x480, or at 4k, it doesn't matter as far as multi-player. Being at a higher resolution or having advanced models and textures doesn't slow down multiplayer, as that's handled by your client, and only for display, and is based on your cpu and graphics card.

There's no good reason for the graphics to be this bad. It's simple design choices the developers made, clearly the ship building was HEAVILY (read: entirely) influenced by Kingdom Hearts 1. But in Kingdom Hearts, they knew their limitations so ship size was restricted, any bigger than an 8x6 grid or whatever it was and they knew the console would tap out because of the way the ships are rendered - as SEPARATE PARTS that each have their own individual motion, shading, lighting, and in some cases animations that have to be computed independently of each other. It's like building with LEGO blocks - each block is its own physical entity even after all the pieces are connected. This allows players to have more creative freedom, but it limits choices to standardized "faux-voxel" part shapes and it makes the fps TANK if you try to build a medium or large ship like the Star Destroyer. Compare this to other space-ship games where instead of building a ship one random piece at a time, you're restricted to certain blueprints that are unlocked once you collect all the parts or enough money to purchase them, or you start with a ship frame and it only has a set number of slots to insert various parts - in that case the ships are rendered as a single solid object rather than fifty separate objects loosely connected. So in short, because they decided to allow voxel-esque "full creativity" in the construction of ships, they had to compromise on the shape of the parts to make them universal, and then they had to also compromise on graphics quality overall in order to prevent severe lag once you have one or two decent sized ships on screen.
