This was probably the same idea they used in the Greek history of Hercules. In real life, the Hydra was probably not a real nine headed monster, but many snakes in a swamp. And the idea of growing two new heads was probably because there were so many snakes, it was hard to keep count.

I like how the three boss stages for Rahab are named after different ocean deities, implying that different cultures around the world have encountered him and have their own names for him. Also, I could be reading into this too much, but the different stages of the battle seem to reference different stages of evolution: Dagon crawls, like a primate. When he becomes Poseidon, he stands up, like a human. And when he becomes Rahab, he grows a mystical third eye, implying a higher stage of evolution.

It could also imply how limited the deity’s powers became after he decided to seal himself away from the world once he summoned the 5 great sea monsters. If he didn’t need to attack several explorers like when they started chasing after riches and fame, then he might have decided to not use all of his power if he only needed to deal with a few stragglers. In the ending it shows that Dagon/Poseidon/Rahab originally had the giant red eye open and most likely grew the smaller two as a way to still see with his power locked up.

Maybe it’s just me, but I always thought the names for the First and Third phases of the Final Boss should’ve been rearranged; Rahab should’ve been first, and Dagon last. It would’ve made more sense in terms of progression too, since Dagon is - according to Lovecraftian mythos - an ancient deity far older than any of the other deities dreamt up by humanity, and it would’ve made the whole “Rahab suddenly growing a third eye and turning into a demonic fish/mantis hybrid” thing make more sense.

I remember always returning to this game every birthday at a place called Kids Aerobics. The arcade wasn't the mythic neon landscape I imagine old school counterparts were, it was barely wider than my house. But it had some worthwhile games. I remember dying to the Octopus and begging my Mom to back me up. Probably the closest to couch co-op I every got as a kid when I barely had knowledge or money for games. This presentation with the narration, music, and stylized art for the wanted posters and end credits makes this worth remembering. It's probably the most obscure game I haven't forgotten about. Can't quite get over murdering rare sea creatures tho, at least the small ones. Reminds me of terrorizing innocent dinos in Monster Hunter. Like I wanna take photos of the last dodo not cook it. Fun game tho.

Ocean Hunter is apparently said recently, going to be available as part of Yakuza/Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, next year as one of the available arcade games to play, which most Yakuza/Like a Dragon games have. Really neat that they're bringing it back. The spearfishing minigame in Yakuza 6 was a nice throwback as well to this game, from years ago.

A retro arcade named Time Line Arcade in York, PA has the original sit down cabinet version of The Ocean Hunter, the only thing is the player 2 gun controller needs replacement parts that are very hard to find so while it's playable player 2 has a distinct disadvantage when aiming. My nephew and I have to play the game all the way through every time we go there, it's a tradition.

I can imagine a fisherman and a marine biologist arguing if these are sea monsters or mutated sea creatures caused by radioactive substances in the water. In the end, the biologist loses the argument.

Actually, if you manage to defeat the White Death boss before it kills the diver, you can face an extra boss in the first level.

I'm not used to seeing this game without my shoulders shaking back and forth and hearing "SSSHDUN DUN DUN DUN DUN" over and over again lol i keep immitating it out of habit during the intense parts

Me and my brother literally sat at the machine for this game for like 2 hours to beat it, there were people watching most of the time and a bunch of other kids wanting to play it while we were just hogging the machine to beat it
