Gameboy Advance is Still Insane in 2025

By the time the GBA came out, developers had managed to master sprite based 2D games. It's a special console with its large collection of masterpieces, both underated and mainstream in pretty much any genre you can think of. The GBA has to go down in history as one of the greatest consoles of all time. Its library of games can go head to head with any other console, I fully believe that.

Modern gaming sucks but we have access to all the old games like we never had before and there are many passionate indie developers who are keeping the essence and fun of retro games alive with new experiences. It’s kinda funny how I had almost NONE of the actual heavy-hitters of the GBA. Aside from Pokémon, the most I played on my GBA were tie-in games like Chicken Little, Brother Bear, and Lilo and Stitch 2. It wasn’t until later in life that I discovered classics like Metroid Zero Mission and Kirby Nightmare in Dream Land.

Been playing my GBA SP daily for a little over a month now. I built custom ones for my siblings last year too buying all of the parts separately and assembling them. It makes me so happy to see how much we all enjoy the system, and it's really a testament to it's quality that they were such a hit. Definitely a contender for my personal favorite system of all time.

I wish it had a link cable port though. Imagine it being able to connect to the gamecube like the real thing. Anyway, I'm waiting until the price of retro handhelds supporting PS2 and gamecube Drops a little bit more. I think 2025 may be the year in which I might buy a retrohandheld.

Now, that would be nostalgic! You can connect them together over wifi, though. Trading pokemon is a little complex, but once you set it up, it's awesome!

The GBA was very much a portable SNES, with full color, widescreen, and even some 3D capability. The only real shortcoming was being short two buttons, which really didn't matter too much, even in some of the bigger SNES remade titles like Super Mario World and Link to the Past (I still have both of these GBA games, LTTP/Four Swords is in my DS right now). The GBA also introduced some of the best, if short-lived, new Nintendo IPs with Advance Wars and this game at 5:05 (the name escapes me at the moment). Between all four titles, I've put more hours into Advance Wars then any other game franchise by a massive margin. I still have both AW DS games and an original DS that works great. It's not one of those flimsy DS Lites either. These things are built just like the SP (even the same battery and power plug), and if it were any older, it'd be one of those awesome DS prototypes that I still want so badly.

Advanced Wars wasn't a new IP. it was the 7th in the Wars series which started in 1988.

1:40- It's sad that the strongest Nintendo consoles are both over 20 years old (N64 and GBA). Followed closely by the new 3ds. The switch is weak and a poor excuse of a console. I'll never understand why Nintendo keeps on making weak consoles and corporate shills stay pay money for them.

Due to my fascination with the GBA and a certain popular 32-bit home console, it caused me to discover quite a few hidden gems within both of these consoles. Some of which may have either had games on both consoles, or had ports between both of them.

I got a miyoo mini a couple years ago and it woke up my nostalgia. Every since then I've been collecting and modding original Gameboys. It's nice to play on the real thing after emulating for so long.

I'm right behind you. Last year, I bought a 3ds and hacked it mainly for playing ds games, and nothing beats that original feel. Now I need an actual ds lite, but it's hard to find them in good condition without yellowing

crazy how big the jump from the gameboy advance till the wiiu/switch era is, yet now almost the same amount of time passed and we still are stuck with the switch, and even then the games don't really look at much better. of course graphics isn't everything but I have a feeling we are close to peak right now. because the better the games will look the more detail it needs and the more development time it will need aswell. that's why Nintendo likes to stylize most of their games.

I'm gonna get the Megaman Legacies collection at some point (Zero/ZX and Battle Network, the ones I miss playing the most), but yeah, let's be honest, the chibiA....I mean, GBA library in the Switch isn't the greatest. I find it annoying I have to pay additional for an emulator that has several classics missing (and that don't have some sort of legacy collection on the eshop either)

Thats why a modded DsiXL is the best way to play all these classics plus the very underrated DS library. Im playing chrono trigger, alien isolation ,metroid Fusion, Megaman Zero, chintown wars now.

Honestly, my favorite game console and games library. Its my best friend wherever i go even at home being a busy as all hell dad. Really glad to hear people still loving this thing today ❤ When i realized it was all i needed, I bought a Modded GBA and got an SP donated to me from my sister back home and grabbed an EZ Flash while i rebuild my collection and for my hacks ans translation. Reason why i prefer the real hardware is its 💯 accurate with zero lag. Its an all in 1 package. Im a happy camper and going to be for many many years to come.

I remember having a booklight plugged into the charging port of my indigo landscape GBA, with a magnifier over the screen to make it more visible. Sure, it was heavy, awkward, and lessened battery life. But it meant you could see your games. Klanoa, Justice League Chronicles, Batman: Vengeance and Rise of Sin Tzu, Iridion 3D, and the DKC trilogy were some of my favorites.

I did get one of those modded GBAs, and while it is nice, honestly, the screen is a bit fuzzy, and the backlight is kinda muddled, and it eats batteries like a hungry Pac-Man. But I love the design of that first GBA. So, I might just have to spend some money...

I just had to pick one up, and it really is pretty great. The GBA is one of my fav consoles ever, def my favorite handheld, but I always found the SP uncomfortable in my big goofy hands, so this new model was everything I've ever wanted. It's my first retro handheld, and that perfect 3x GBA pixel scaling is just freakin gorgeous

GBC is more powerful than the NES only reason it might not seem like it at first glance is because all the later NES games used specialized chips to expand the innate capabilities of the console.

what they should do is try to miniaturize the current switch, make a switch 'ultra-lite' about the size of a ps vita, and continue to release lower powered games for it, which also will be compatible with the new switch. they're really leaving money on the table to be scooped up by anbernic right now. people want pocketable handhelds.

the 35xxsp looks great, but im waiting for the inevitable 34xxsp. if i'm going to have a device that looks just like a gameboy sp, i want to be able to full screen it with integer scaling. with how popular the 34xx and the 35xxsp have been, i think a 34xxsp is quite likely that said with some shaders gba looks fine on a 640x480 screen

Meh, couldn't care much over fan replicas. I will always prefer the original consoles, I still have my GBC and GBA (and a GBA SP that I yet have to repair a little,). What I'd certainly do is buying a GBA everdrive, they run games natively and it's a lot cheaper than actually buying the games (cause oh boy they're expensive).

Honestly those RG consoles don't interest me since the screens are small and I can't set the FPS to above 30 And I can't change the resolutions

Theres options in retroarch to set the framerate to 60, and there's things like integer scaling and bilinear filtering to make them look better on TV screens. But, yeah, the screens are pretty small. It's definitely a nostalgia device more than anything

the screen on the rg34xx is double the size of original hardware. i wouldn't want a screen much bigger than that for gba, they're designed for small screens. the text etc looks way too big on a bigger screen. not sure what you mean about fps and resolution, that's just not correct, both are adjustable.

Gba was my first handheld and I LOVED it but to be fair I agree gba has a low amount of games I'd want to go back to. Metroid Zero Mission, metroid Fusion, F Zero maximum Velocity, Golden Sun, Pokemon games and ff6 are really the only ones I'd still play.
