Edit: RIP to Billy, Maruki’s English VA. He recently passed due to Stage 4 colon cancer at the very young age of 35. Billy's portrayal of Maruki will always be one of my favorites out of the English VA cast, with many of his scenes really hitting home for me. I hope the family can find peace in his passing, and the community can spread awareness to be on the lookout for symptoms of this horrible disease. Fuck cancer. ----------- Also, to add on the discoveries here in the video made by Neviutz and FurryWulfz, Shady also put in a lot of time and effort into the Royal OOB discoveries found before major skips happened from one of the accidental finds. In mid 2020, royal OOB was possible, but was much less understood than before the late 2020 and early 2021 finds. Please give all the runners and glitchhunters a sub/follow!

There used to be similar sort of runkiller in FFIX runs (boss could completely wipe your party like nine hours in if I remember correctly.) I watch a LOT of these multi hour RPG speedruns as background noise and to learn new things and as it turns out, most of them have some sort of runkiller hours in and that, as you said in the video, makes me respect the runners who can just push through random bullcrap like that and persevere to continue to do runs. I definitely would not have patience for that! Persona/Megaten speedruns are some of my favourites, love to see you cover one of them! Great video, thanks for your hard work!

That's why I always remind new speedrunner to buff Defense and Heal before you deal damage to not die against the counter since you die in your turn then boss have his turn after that killing your low level Digimon and not letting them revive your main Digimon...

Great, detailed video. Persona 5 / Persona 5 Royal are great RPG runs that usually go dismissed just because of their sheer length, even by RPG standards. A lot of technical aspects go into making the runs as fast as they are though, and even though the community for each game is very small the people involved with both games have put a lot of time and effort into optimizing these runs as best as possible. edit: Granted there are a few minor inaccurate pieces of info on P5R. After May 2020, the full method of going OOB properly in Royal was being discussed long before December 2020 and the mention of what Fetchgames randomly stumbled upon, and this can be seen reflected in several videos on Shady's channel around July of 2020. Where Shady recorded methods of him going OOB in Madarame's, Okumura's, Kaneshiro's, and Maruki's Palace. Albeit in spots that didn't turn out to be much use in the end, but the community was still well aware of how to achieve free movement OOB long before December 2020. Fetchgames discovery was a recorded method of being stuck in the ground post ambushing a shadow. Which seems to be a rarely occurring bug with still no known method of achieving consistently.

I found a glitch in a Flash RPG called _Crystal Story II_ that allows both bridge areas to pretty much be skipped--normally, avoiding enemies on the bridges is harder than normal due to the tight space, but changing the display mode to Follow or Full makes it possible to clip out of bounds in the first transition points. While there are no speedruns of this game (or the first one, for that matter) that I know of, discovering that glitch (at least for myself) did intrigue me about speedrunning this game...

I think a video comparing the different versions of Persona 3’s speedruns would be interesting. Because the one thing I know about persona 3 speedruning is that in fes, there’s a glitch that let’s you skip the final boss entirely, meaning you theoretically have to do none of Tartarus(probably a bit of a boring speedrun at that point). It saves 5 hours over the category that bans this glitch. However for some reason, even though it doesn’t have this major skip, the Persona 3 portable run is half as long, and I can’t imagine what makes such a huge difference. Sure the loading times and mashing through the cutscenes is probably faster, and it has fast travel, but fes can skip all of Tartarus. Wtf is going on in p3p that makes it so much shorter? I’d watch the runs to find out, but it’s a 15 hour and 8 hour run.
@uffy2 жыл бұрын
I'd say a large part has to do with not having to walk anywhere as P3P uses a cursor for all of the over world navigation
@FFXI_Addict2 жыл бұрын
Scenes play out more like a Visual Novel than the PS2 original where characters are walking around and visibly having their polygon models emoting. All of that not existing in P3P just makes it a lot faster to go through.
@brendanbeta4872 жыл бұрын
Portable has several things that make it way faster. The visual novel style means that instead of walking around and watching cutscenes you just need to mash. Persona 3 has a lot of cutscenes. The ability to quick travel anywhere means you can immediately go home in about 15 seconds compared to the minute or so it takes normally. On the topic of quick travel, you can leave Tartarus at any floor and go back to your highest floor instead of having to use the teleport. Combat is made less random and consistent due to a few key changes. Controllable party members makes planning and quick fixes to problems easier. The change to knocked down is another factor, p3p uses P4 knocked down where you only lose a turn if your dizzy. Skill cards mean you can have immunity and skills on personas that make bosses more consistent. Your party members are nearly always available in portable, which means you don’t need to plan around their availability. There’s a few more changes but they aren’t used to much in the speedrun e.g money easier to get.
@butterflydreamer96492 жыл бұрын
You guys also forget in p3/fes you can’t really fast forward so you need to hold down triangle which takes some time since characters move around/ there’s a slight delay to show the next text, while in portable if you hold down triangle it’s super snappy and it’ll skip it really quick since it’s a visual novel. Where in fes a cutscene will take 3 minutes to fully skip it’ll take no more then 30 seconds on portable

I feel as though speedruns for games that last longer than 10 hours NEED to allow players the opportunity to take a break. Think about how popular P5 is, yet how few people speedrun it. The amount of people who love the game, but also have both the time and willingness to sit and play for so long is extremely small. If a break were allowed I am confident the game would start to be broken and people would probably start finding new routes and making it significantly faster.

Imagine just how much time would be shaved from the run if Atlus just gave us proper scene skips rather than fast-forwards. You'd be cutting a minimum of 4-5+ hours off, possibly way more. I get that's not really an easy ask cause of dialogue choices sometimes being important, but what they could do is flag certain choices as important or unimportant, and the skip function either jumps you immediately to the next "important" dialogue that results in possible social stat, relationship values or choices that change what action you take like entering a dungeon or mementos; or if one of those isn't in line, it skips the scene completely. Or the more simple solution is having the skip function simply jump you instantly to any dialogue choices regardless of their import. This alone would still shave hours off of runs themselves.
@r.a.fgattaiguy8456 ай бұрын
adding a skip dialogue option in a game almost entirely about talking to people is just dumb
