Depressed for nostalgia is a problem that many of my gamer friends have. Oh god, one of my most heartbreaking PS2 moments: So at my house we would always use my mom's nail polish remover and a q-tip to clean the game discs when they didn't want to play right, and it worked GREAT. So one day I brought my copy of Kingdom Hearts 2 (a most beloved game) over to my friends house to play. It had seen some heavy use, and hadn't been cleaned in some time, and didn't want to play right. So I had my friend go get his mom's nail polish remover and a q-tip (a trick he had never heard of) and started cleaning the disc... ... ... Only for it to get cloudier the more I cleaned... ... ... Apparently his mom used a different kind of polish remover, and it ATE AWAY AT THE TOP LAYERS OF THE DISC! The game was ruined, and I was heartbroken, because I was NOT one of those rich kids, and it would be at least a few months before we'd be able to afford another copy of the game. If you read this far, thanks!!! I guess this isn't exclusively a PS2 era problem, but that's when it happened to me lol

Crossing ur fingers the game will work this time - Ran the game 90% of the time even if it was beyond deep scratches - playing rpgs like final fantasy and kingdom hearts and forgetting to save - not having enough space on memory card so I would literally cry because I had to delete one if my game data's - it actually got me and my family to play together -Internet was limited so when u had internet to look up cheats for games u would write them down on a piece of paper - SOOO MANY GAAAAMES RPGS, PLATFORMERS, SHOOTERS, FIGHTERS, RACERS, HORROR, HACK N SLASH...IT HAD IT ALL I love the ps2 and I appreciate it so much for Introducing me to the world of gaming My first system is a ps1, but I wasn't really into gaming until I got the ps2

@bottledpills6 жыл бұрын
Jacob Molyneux that's mainly because of game models and textures. Today's weekly updates for the most don't make any change to those things, and in fact those are actually burned on the disks. Updates usually fix bugs and security. Once upon a time, bugs were 99% fixed before the game launch and so was security. And those little harmless bugs that were found months or years after the release, were just really funny to exploit. Also, many PS2 games are 5/8 GBs big.

@Falcon I can't even count how many PS2's I've rebuilt! I learned how to polish the disc's so the damn machine could read it! I would volt mod the systems to get the most out of them. Even adjusted the laser voltage when it refused to read discs, just to get a little more life out of it! I still have a box of parts, and quite a few games. And a working PS2, with a number of controllers, including the big orange gun that I bought with Resident Evil : Dead Aim. The gun only works with the old CRT TV's though, And I gave those up a long time ago! LOL! I don't play the console anymore, but I still use emulators to play the games. Good stuff there Falcon. Have a great day!

@mattsmechanicalssi58336 жыл бұрын
@Alex Kirchgessner I'm sorry I don't. All of my information (books, files, and computers at the time) were lost in a house fire. From what I can remember, there are 2 potentiometers (small, but evident) that control the laser and the servo. Mark their position with a Sharpie, and take a resistance reading. Move the pot all the way CCW and take a reading, then move it all the way CW and take a reading. Put the pot back to the original starting point, and turn it in the direction of least resistance(which will give more voltage to the laser). Do this in small increments, and test each time. You don't want to max out the voltage, cause you will fry the laser very quickly. That said, you do need more voltage than the stock setting, because as the laser ages(through use), it requires more voltage to do the same job. Now you may get another 3-6 months out of it or 2-3 years out of it. And you can always adjust it again when it stops working, and hopefully get a bit more life out of it. I hope this helps! Have a great day! Oh yeah, you may have to adjust the height of the laser too. The screw is on the assembly the laser rides on. And again, mark the position before you move it, and only make small adjustments with tests in between. Remember, a little goes a long way!

Completely pointless and useless as far as teaching you how to play the game, but holy crap that thing was really cool. Didn't have many PS2 games, I think I've only got around ten if I'm making a really generous guess. Was always broke back then. Anyways, my point is that I don't know if doing stuff like that for the manuals was a common thing. Still kind of heartbreaking between the loss of the manuals and not having the published Strategy Guides. I know it wasn't PS2, but the one for Star Fox 64 was pretty amazing with all of the flavor text.

we freaking put the discs on the refrigerator because we thought when the disc got scratches it meant there is space betweens data and freezing them would squeeze that space between them and disc would work LOL

Sometimes the rubbing alcohol would work though. Was great to clean the CD face with, and often that was all it took. I also remember the Gamestop a couple miles away from my house had one of those resurfacing machines that could fix scratched CDs and make them work again. THAT was some good shit back in the day.

I think the best thing about PS2 was that there was no social media storm,there was no KZbin and Facebook gaming communities and bs.Mostly you go in a store see a game u heard about or don't know anything about it and buy it play it.Everyone had a unique collection (of course the classics were there).Now a days gamers waste more time on social media rather than investing it in games and usually people fight make lame memes.We get crappy reviews form IGN or Gamespot and now there is not a lot of that gaming charm.

Aaah, the good ole days, when you actually had to buy a Prima guide if you needed help getting through your game. lol
@gamerhead0076 жыл бұрын
Yeah true. Gamers nowadays read reviews of various sites and see the other players' ratings. They decide to play the game if it's stated good by these other players and websites. Back in the day we created the gaming community. Somebody bought a totally new game and if turned out good would pass on to others. I remember my friends and I had only 10 games in common. Others were different and we used to have fun together.

Honestly I think our games are being priced the best way they can. Not by all game devs of course. I am just saying look at how much more work goes into a game. How many more people have to make that game. It is a different world. They could just sell all AAA titles for $100 or sell the game for 60 and get the rest back with dlc. Just saying with inflation and increased development cost have kind of forced this. Pay the 80 - 100 amount and you get the full game. I agree it sucks and some companies abuse this but seriously SNES games sold for $50 to $60 in the 90's.

i kinda miss memory cards, if your PS2 ever broke and you needed to replace it there was no fuss about reinstalling games or transferring data from the broken one to the new one, just take the memory card from the broken one and put it in the new one and your done, no waiting for that shit to complete the transfer, and no worry about having a shitty internet to make that process take days edit: oh, and the save icons were amazing, they didnt need to have 3D icons like that, but they did them anyway, that was a nice little detail and it sucks they dont still do that now

I was negative 7 years old when this came out but I only got the PS4 in 2017. So from like 2011 - 2017 I played on my PS2 with my Simpsons Hit And Run, FIFA 08 and many more. 7:17 was the bane of the console though. You wake up, you turn it on and cycle through your cases of disks. You find the one you'd love to play. You insert it and wait in excitement. And you're greeted by that. It ruined my day and I'd always ask my dad to do 'the toothpaste trick' where you use toothpaste and other things and when used on the disc it would work again. I have a display of all my PS2 memories on my desk. And despite the fact I didn't know what the analogue button was and I constantly pressed it (never disabled my analogue sticks though) I had one hell of a time in then 6 years and I've been doing my best to get the parts to the TV I've had since my mum gave me the PS2 which was in the living room when I was 6. The first ever game I played was MotoGP and I remember I thought I was breaking the law for playing Simpsons Hit And Run which was a PEGI 7 when I was 6. Memories :)
