I bought this game regardless of the reviews. Really loving the world, atmosphere, and story. I actually like how they don’t pinpoint locations. You have to look at the map, go by the streets they give you to find locations. Finding clues, and figuring things out is what makes this game so much fun. I can always forgive a game on combat if the story is great (which it is).

@jones95jb3 жыл бұрын
Yes grades are bad. You should always play a game "blind" imo. When you love it great! When you hate it you hate it because YOU hate it. For no other reasons. When you read scores before playing a game chances are high that people let their fun diminish by a bad grade. But this bad grade could have reasons who don't effect you personal opinion at all. Like playing a game which was buggy in 2015. Back then it had a bad grad. but it could be great right now. Also there could be things you wouldn't even notice without a review or that don't annoy you at all.

@bluewolf35085 жыл бұрын
@@eastern2687 for me, even without considering the studio behind it, this is my favorite H.P lovecraft inspired game. This depends on what each person wants from a game like this, so its personal opinion. But nonetheless, as just a game is amazing, the open world and the amount of content really makes it shine, voice acting is amazing, they didnt waste budget on pointless animations for the face expressions, but it still manages to look good enough. Combat + exploring + mystery solving + looting + dialogue choices. In a way that doesnt feel overwhelming, thats something not even AAA studios do.
@awsomeinator1295 жыл бұрын
I love the games story and mysteries as of right now, especially how you feel so smart when you figure stuff out, they give you little objective marks having to find them yourself through dialogue and clues and it’s so great to feel like a detective. I play on PS4 and I’ve experienced a few different glitches, no crashes or floating people, but opening the menus sometimes slows down the game and freezes for a second or two. The combat is still a bit clunky but the aiming is a bit better.

I got this at 60% off (but really wanted it) the game definitely feels like Sherlock Holmes with scary in it. The things I don't like are the Boat I drive like a drunk, the inability to lock onto target to attack, and the load times are a bit taxing. I kind of wish they would have like other games where you find fragments that tell more about the city history and findable artifacts for achievements. The camera feels like it could be used more as well. Overall I'm having a good time but yeah it could use a few things.

I understand the criticism about the gameplay and the bugs, and also I think that the game lacks on content from the Lovecraft's tales, because I would like to see more entities, creatures and cults apearing. But unfortunately Frogwares is still a small studio with not so much budget, nevertheless, I believe they tried their best. It is definitely worthy playing.

Great overview, I bought this game recently after watching your video and a few others. I really enjoyed the balanced review and it helped me make my decision. I bought this game knowing what i was in for and what id like, and because of that im really enjoying it. Having just bought it I'd say theyve patched it a bit since your review so ive probably got a little better build, but some of the issues obviously still remain. That said, I really LOVE this game. Because of the great setting, writing and general feel im able to look past the shortcomings. Its just a shame it could have been something so more. This could have been the next bioshock or the like (in immersion level not game style) but i think i needed maybe 6-12 months more development to add meat on the bones in parts. All said tho, Ive never loved a game with shortcomings as much as I do this game. I hope they get the chance to do more with this IP as it has such character and promise.

Crafting materials respawn and there are section on the map where you can run around and gather materials whiles dodging monsters! So if didn’t have enough you could gone to one of those sections and loot from cars and trash cans. And I found that the voice acting was on point, really well done. The combat is a bit wonky and will make you struggle at times. But the story is engaging and well written.

Started playing 2 days ago. Never read any lovecraft in my life. Never played any kathulu games before. I know absolutely nothing of the lore beside kathulu is a weird looking tentacle face being with wings (I dont even know if that's right). I've seen kathulu in Easter eggs such as a cult in we happy few. That being said, I love this game so far. The combat is far from desirable. I play on console because I was looking on steam for the game, long story short I thought it wasnt available on PC yet so I bought ps4 version. The aiming is very clunky and not smooth at all. It's just a pain. Honestly I'm more likely to take my chances with melee than try to shoot. I have encountered glitches where people would just drop. Like they would be sitting and fishing and then just drop out of the screen. Not a big deal. Besides the combat and the few minor glitches I have a lot of fun. The way it doesnt hold your hand and the way you have to piece together clues, amazing. I keep a notebook at my desk and write everything down like an actual detective. It's more like a journal I'm writing from the characters POV while playing the game. I write about the evidence, my thoughts on the case, my deductions, encounters with people, their descriptions, the feeling they gave me. etc. I document everything. Makes solving the investigations easier but is very time consuming. Just a way to emerse myself deeper into the game. I'm a huge fan of figuring shit out on my own and this game does an amazing job at it, especially if you play on (master slueth). Would definitely recommend for anyone into crime/detective games or shows. Combat is undesirable so if that's what you're looking for move on. If you're looking for a good challenge, some nice oldschool detective work, and just generally feeling like a badass sherlock Holmes investigative genius, this is the game for you!

Fair review, the game is amazing. Everything you said + I found the combat really fun, about maging resources while using the proper weapon for each situation, enemies vary a lot (from size to special powers) and each one has a different weakness that makes you learn their pattern first. As for resources, you said they're scarce, but that might have to do a lot with personal experience, loot crates respawn loot and sometimes so fast that you can grab three times from the same crate while investigating a house, (this might be a bug tho but it works almost everywhere). There is also the infested zones, that are supposed to be high difficulty high reward zones, but the thing is that you can loot them and run without getting hit. If im being honest, I think you can exploit this so much that you never run out of bullets and can play as a walking minigun depleting your ammo as you please, then refilling it on these infested zones crates. Besides the too exploitable loot respawns, I feel the game is perfect (besides, its not exactly bad to have the option of exploiting a mechanic), with some bugs here and there I hope they fix. Everything else 10/10, and a lot of gameplay hours you can get out of it.

Life-long, dedicated Lovecraft fan here. I find this game to be...well, out-of-the-box thinking for sure. A perfect rendition of a Lovecraft book into a game has been done twice now, and both games were called Call of Cthulhu. Lovecraft did not have some brave armed guy in any of his books ready to just fight these monsters. That is where other games got it right. This game got it right for other reasons. Do we really want only a small GLIMPSE of the big bad Old Ones like in the books? Do we really want ANOTHER strictly detective game? The creators of this game knew their Lovecraft, and they knew they were out of the box with this, and I admire that strongly. I hope to see a sequel, or 5, with several Great Old Ones experienced along the way.

"It feels like those Sherlock Holmes kinda games"-- well, there is a reason for this, considering it was made by the same folks who made the Sherlock Holmes series of video games. All in all though, I am not very far in (haven't had much time to play) but am loving it so very much. It reminds me a lot of Vampyr as well only I found the narrative in The Sinking City to be so much more interesting. I actually found the huge amounts of sociopolitical blabber in Vampyr to be very distracting, and in fairness, the combat in The Sinking City actually feels less broken than in that game (I absolutely despised the combat in Vampyr). As stated above, though, I am only a few side missions in (pretty much just landed at the hotel and done a few of the side missions thereafter), so my opinion may change, but for now, I am adoring the game in general, and find that the city is probably one of the most "real" feeling ones I've played in a video game in a long while. I don't feel like it is as arbitrary with invisible walls and fake doors as other games, and I find the city a lot more navigable than in other games of its kind. And the lore is just... if you are a Lovecraft fan, this is a love letter for sure, and plays really well with the tropes introduced by HP.

I need to watch your videos more often. I see so many games on PSN that look good, but the video or screen shots only do so much. I love how you present the game and just showcase what it has, pros and cons, showing gameplay and how the game works. I was looking at this game yesterday and I love H.P Lovecraft stories, so this game would be up my alley.

People do not set expectations right. This game is developed by a small ukrainian company with budget not even close to average games out there and still they pulled up pretty high quality and handcrafted world. Also their Sherlock games were very successful. People these days are annoying as fuck due to access to all major goods. I would check them out if they lived in 70s 80s and tetris would be considered a triple A game.

i fu enter a building , loot it, go out then go back it, by magic, all the items refresh, and they are random, so if u spend like less than an hour in the smae building, going in and out, u can max your stuff and the game becomes more fun......and yes, the pc version is the best choice....

I agree with a fair amount of the points you had. Combat, not great. Graphics and glitches, not great. And I'm on the Switch version which all the hair looks like Playdoh. But the story is great. I was describing to a friend all the weird stuff that goes on in the game and they were shocked that I was describing just one game instead of 2 or 3. You got plenty and various things to do despite the town being so big but half innaccessable. Charles Reed can be a snarky smartass which can be hilarious at times. Could do with less monsters. At the later points in the game, you can't enter any new place without having to tackle some beasties. They were scary before when I was a pansy, but now I just wish there was less of them so I can actually play the game and get to the end to see how this engaging story concludes.

Jake probably forgot to mention that the game came from creators of "Sherlock Holmes", so it's much more like that rather than books of H. P.

I am playing it on a PS4 and have experienced no glitches at all. It’s very seamless. I do get what you are saying about travel, but there are fast travel spots that get you close to most places you will need to go, but even near the end of the game I often find myself choosing to travel the full route occasionally just because I find the city so compelling. The art style, rendering and especially the weather mechanic is especially well executed and that along with the exceptional soundtrack really make for an impressively moody place to visit. My issue is mostly with the reusing of assets that remind the player of the “gaminess” of this place. I agree that it feels a bit unfinished, especially for this reason. It just feels like they ran out of money, time or both. The game is flawed for sure, but what it does accomplish it does better than just about any game I’ve played. That said I am a HUGE Lovecraft fan and find this very respectful of the source inspiration without being too derivative. The combat is a bit clunky, but I feel that is by design and it makes more sense to run from critters than engage them. The poverty of ammunition keeps that kind of gameplay going which makes for a more compelling story. This isn’t a fighting game. The puzzles and mysteries are well crafted. The lore is engaging and unlike most games filled with bits of information (looking at you Horizon) this lore is actually engaging and I’m invested in the societies. The moral ambiguity is also a nice touch and I found the story, character and voice acting engaging. It is really the repetition of assets that hold this game back for me. Like I’ve said, it’s a flawed game, but at the same time it’s become one of my favorites. But it’s definitely not for everyone.

Clunky as the combat is, I really enjoyed this game. I really enjoy Lovecraftian horror and the general aesthetic; I love the story, how this game doesn’t hold your hand during the detective sections, and the mythos nods. Plus, any game that lets you insult and then shoot KKK members in the face is a game I want to play.

I am very happy so far. I ran around for an hour after I got to the hotel, and I have only gotten a couple clues from the doctor. That's it. Feels very real life detectivey. Does not in any way hold your hand. Not sure what to do now, but I am ok with it. Just so you know, you don't get penalized when you die, so you can die in a new area and you will respawn at the nearest save, even if it has not been seen yet. I am a big H.P. Lovecraft fan, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It is definitely a love letter. I feel like it plays exactly how H.P. Lovecraft's writing is received and understood. A bit wonkey, but full of little tid bits to feast on with eldritch hunger.

honestly the game is just so much more fun when you cheat engine in like a few thousand shotgun, rifle, or sub machine bullets. i went and spent like an hour farming a cheezy house for supplies and got half way through the next mission and ran out of stuff again. thats not fun. would rather just enjoy the story! the combat sucks anyway

I think the way monsters are often thrown at the player _waters down_ the game a bit. I get the market call for action in games, but this could be a true lovecraftian adventure that became a lovecraftian action at some points. At least the combat isn't central to the game.
