For a company that loves "fighting the culture war" they're all to eager to tell you to avoid the *BIGGEST MEDIUM OF ENTERTAINMENT IN THE WORLD*. But sure, they're not grifters though.
@bethanyh1637

Its only the biggest medium because mobile gaming revenue gets lumped in with it, but most "gamers" don't consider that true gaming.
@DarkSpyro707
@DarkSpyro707 6 ай бұрын
@@bethanyh1637 gaming as a medium exploded before mobile gaming became the money grab that it is now. take away the mobile games and its still a medium that is consumed and spent on by consumers more than any movie property you can think of. Games like pokemon are a world wide phenomenon. A single game can make more money than any smash hit box office title. To try and downplay it at any level is either feigning ignorance of it all or just denial. Video games are huge part of our culture now whether neocons want to admit it or not and its a big part in this culture war. To tell us to avoid gaming because its "woke" is to cede what is one of the biggest if not THE biggest front of the culture war.

I wouldn't conflate buying a piece of art with acceptance of it's message, tho the two often go hand in hand. One of my favorite movies is a co-opted psuedo anarchist turned anti-Bush era in V for Vendetta. I still love the movie despite the ham-fisted anti Bush rhetoric missing from the source material. I think many people bought the latest SM game despite it's woke politics, not because of it. A good game is a good game. Luckily for us video game lovers, despite the industry surpassing movies in revenue, in mainstream, it's seen as "oh that's a kids thing" so funny enough, it's not quite as co-opted for social messages as tv and movies are. And when it is, they willl find out what Disney did...people consume entertainment to escape reality, not to be told how to view and mold it.

I am myself rather bemused that people would voluntarily refer to themselves by a term that indicates they conceive of their self-identity through a medium of entertainment consumed. (I've played video games since childhood and have never identified with the term). No one talks about movie-fanatics, Western cartoon-lovers, otaku is primarily a Japanese concept for the most extreme manga/anime fans, and bookworm only indicates a person reads a lot of books, when there are so many genres and types of books out there. Gamer however as a term is a very narrow and specific term referring to a person that defines themselves by passionate mass consumption of video games, with a number of stereotypes from nerdy flesh boulder neckbeards to Madden/Fifa/Call of Duty dude-bros to the pasty rail-thin stringing hair goth kid who plays Doom or Hatred religiously all falling under it. People in general don't like it because people don't like fanatics of pretty much any kind, especially not those who are fanatics for particular mediums of entertainment and insulated culture around it who handle criticism with a fourth-grader level of maturity.

I hate to break it to you, but personally I don't think he's on the "keeping the malicious politics out of gaming" side. In his "Wokeness in Video Games" video, he said "some people believe" (indicating us, and not in a way that he places himself on such a side) - I found that wording peculiar because it's not ACTUALLY committing oneself to anything, more just a stating of a scenario. The entire video was also quite POSSIBLY completely missing or intentionally leaving out the fact that there were political bad faith actors driving storytelling, casting and creative choices

This is why I ultimately dislike Ben Shapiro. Wasn't he a Breitbart guy? Didn't that site's namesake talk at some length during his life about the folly of the right's willing retreat from popular culture and their adoption of the moronic belief that you could defeat an all-consuming ideological philosophy like Marxism by just focusing on politics and economics alone? I remember the Breitbart sites starting as something of a right wing counterweight to sites like Salon, Jezebel, and other lefty sites that did the "intersection of politics and entertainment" thing. So Shapiro strikes out on his own, and who does he boost as his flagship contributor? Matt Walsh, a guy who mostly hews to the tired old neocon/mainstream LOLbert view that pop culture doesn't matter and the right can just win on politics and economics.

@Return_of_Godzillas_Revenge I didn't word my post very well. I was in too much of a hurry. This is catnip to the perpetually online crowd. Most of the content creators who occupy this space stick fairly closely to the prevailing narrative surrounding the events of this space and tend to have similar takes. This continues to perpetuate more discussions about said topic because it makes money/garners engagement for said content creators. The amount of things going on outside of this kerfuffle makes the idea that this is vital or necessary just smacks of falling into a narrative trap. Sure, the vanguard of agitators are losing, but losing what exactly? A rhetorical argument in a niche space? Having a few blips of resistance inside a customer base full of hopelessly bluepilled plasma zombies? My priorities are so much greater than this. I lurk nominally non-woke places to see if people fundamentally understand what they're up against and 99% have _zero_ idea what's going on beyond repeating thought terminating cliches. At some point you zag when your opponent expects a zig.

@@kylekatarn5964 Sure. In the grand scheme of things, this controversy isn't gonna change the world. And I'll even give you that youtubers sometimes focus on culture war stuff too much to the detriment of more urgent real world issues. But gaming isn't a niche space. Hell, not even the specific subsect of people talking about SBI is a niche space, the page that started this whole thing has literally hundreds of thousands of followers, and considering recent high profile flops such as Suicide Squad, or even The Marvels over at the movie side of this issue, it means that people are getting more and more tired of this kind of propaganda. The companies are feeling it, too. WB has announced they'll focus less on AAA gaming and Disney has quetly shelved several projects, so I don't see this being a part of a greater plan, I think they legit messed up. More like coping and seething that other conservatives aren't in lockstep with him, that many conservatives did not trust Trump the first time round because he hung out with Hillary and Bill Clinton for years before running (and thus clearly gave the impression he'd be a moderate Democrat, basically just a RINO, in office), who stated openly they voted for Trump in 2020 between the choice of him and Joe Biden (something which he curiously omits in his rant), and believe that someone like Ron DeSantis would do a better job this time around at winning the election and implementing MAGA policy than Donald Trump, who is being tangled up in politically-motivated legal cases (you can support Trump in overcoming those while at the same time saying someone else can do a better job than him and possibly even pardon him from the motivated federal charges). It's super strange given Razorfist himself admitted Trump is not and never was his first choice the first time. Suddenly he's righteously indignant that other conservatives view Trump (as all politicians) strictly in a meritocratic analytical lens and that personal loyalty to a single politician, especially one that has little consistency in rhetoric and policy, is not justified in their view. Part of that, in no small quantity, is that he seems butthurt that Pat Bucanan (who has had many eye-raising antisemitic positions and beliefs over the years) has been out in the wilderness for the last forty years because no one wants his Mercantilist beliefs in Tariffs (which artificially create scarcity and demonstrated why they're ultimate a bad idea in the Smoot-Hawley Tariff that led to the Great Depression) and his myopic Isolationist beliefs (even though the US has been interventionist at times as far back as the First Barbary War of 1801, especially in the Western hemisphere).

Gaming already has enough on it's plate without having people actively trying to destroy it. Such as: unfinished games launching, lazy compression, day-one patches, pay-to-win, DLC, micro transactions, season passes... etc. We don't need an army of "inclusion experts" to help take down our industry. It was already taking itself down.

Matt Walsh: "Some people spend as much as 100 hours a year gaming!" Motherf--ker, I probably spend more than 100 hours in a MONTH gaming. What kind of lightweights has this guy been talking to? Meanwhile, I probably spend less than 10 hours in a year watching movies, and approximately 0 hours in a year watching television. Which should tell you something about the future of both those industries, while gaming gets dismissed by these brainlette neo-cons. This is why conservatives are always on the back foot...

You can't deny that Kabrutu's "Sweet Baby Inc Detected" curating list is a godsend,the dude literally exposed the entire body of the libtarded Hydra that was hiding underneath the soil after the first Gamergate shitstorm. By putting SBI's vile and shady work into the spotlight he unknowingly opened a can of worms that resulted into being directly linked with individuals who were involved with the first scandal and Zoe Quinn herself,that Steam list became nothing short of a miracle. We now have a clear group of enemies and this time around we are far better organized and aware of their agenda,they are fucked because they know that their old tactics and gaslighting don't work anymore and their lies are getting exposed much better than before.

Man, this ain't a sequel.. It ain't "gamergate 2", because the OG never ended...i'll quote here, what i commented on Eric July's video about the topic.. "there can't be a 2.0 of something, if 1.0 never ended. the shit that precipitated the original controversy never went away...and we never stopped watching and calling out the corrupt, dishonest activists, larping as journalists and developers in the gaming space. GG shifted from a hot conflict, to a cold war....but it's always been there. All that's happened is that hostilities have re-commenced, because these fools mistook our calmness and maturity, for weakness and capitulation." Players have changed, and so has the language...."social justice" is now "wokeness", for example.. It's ALL the same shit from 10 years ago...this more of a resurgence, or continuation of the original, than a new thing unto itself. I wish people would stop pretending like this is new.
