I finally got the vive 4 days ago, the feedback on the vive controllers i agree is absolutelly amazing, trying nvidia funhouse when u rub the 2 swords together or u smash the big hammer around, it feels 100% real! Now if only the vive controller had the shape of the oculus touch T.T it kinda feel comparing the wiimote vs nunchuck for their shapes and how they handle.

Hold on. The extra weight of the Vive controllers is an advantage but for some reason the extra weight added by a single AA battery in each Touch controller is a disadvantage?? This strikes me as trying to balance out the pro's and cons lest it shift the 'win' in one direction or the other and trigger the itchy trigger finger unsubscriber/downvote elements of both communities.
@bliglum
@bliglum 7 жыл бұрын
He said in the vid.. The touch controllers are trying to go for a more weightless "hands in VR" experience. By going with a heavy old school AA, that is sort of at odds.. The Vive Wands, on the other hand, are going for more of a grip style, like a gun, or a sword. Which feels better with more weight.
@GamerMuscleVideos
@GamerMuscleVideos 7 жыл бұрын
As bliglum pointed out , its more that the vive wands end up feeling like a gun you are holding so the wight gives you the impression that what you are holding in game is real as well. Where as the touch controllers are more a conduit to get your hands in the game. Obviously the best all round thing would be if vive controller were lighter and then users could optionally add weight to it, I was not realy saying the wight was a "feature" but more that it was not a detriment to the controllers in most use cases.

I own both... Not very different actually. I prefer oculus touch in hand, feel a lot better and i prefer them for gaming. But the tracking on the vive is indeed better. The oculus comes with the build in audio, while the vive requires an extra 100 bucks atleast for a deluxe headstrap. The Oculus is lighter and more comfortable, but the vive is better for a person wearing glasses like me. Also sweating is an issue with both. Both have good tracking overall, a 3rd sensor for the Oculus makes it very good, but a 3rd with the Vive makes it even better. But i prefer the "stand" sensors on the rift, can be placed on the middle of a table and still work. I would say both have good and bad things. But They are pretty similair

So basically what it all comes down to is cost.. If you really really want to know the controllers will never lose tracking then that'll cost you a couple hundred more bucks. If youre alright with the controllers maybe losing tracking once in a blue moon, save 200 bucks and get the oculus and if need be invest in a 3rd tracker and still of saved money in the long run... or am i missing something?

Good balanced review ... I'm assuming you are a VR avatar tho - you only seem to have arms and hands :) I hope for 2nd gen or later generation, the likes of Oculus and Vive could collaborate and allow the hardware to be interchanged (I know it's unrealistic at this stage, but we can dream).

HTC as a company I have very little respect for, and they have given over control to the steam group (you have to have a gamer application only for video games to even start the htc vive, vs oculus just works when you put it on your head, no work needed.

It seems pretty clear that the Touch controllers are superior in almost every way. Touch controller advantages: - Natural fit into hands - More buttons (2 analog triggers) - Analog sticks - All buttons, triggers, and sticks are capacitive for more intuitive gestures - Can easily be used like an xbox/ps4 controller - Is perfectly compatible with vive wand-based games Vive wand advantages: - Feels more like holding something (e.g. sword or gun) - Has slightly more reliable tracking - Touch pads can maybe be used in unique ways? And it makes sense, since the Vive wands were the first VR controllers to exist, they didn't have anything to compete with or to be compared to. Now that even more time has passed, we have the Index controllers mostly improving on what the Touch controllers could do, albeit at a much steeper price.

This is a really good review on the controllers! I'm still thinking if I should buy either a HTC vive or Oculus Rift. The neat thing with the HTC vive controller is where you can make hand gestures with it. I'm not sure if you can do that with the Oculus rift controller but if they do, tell me. I should really be figuring out where I'm gonna setup a vr room first. Well hopefully I'll figure something out. I'll look on to more videos so I can find my final decision of which I should by. Neat. Been thinking of getting into VR but. Everything I looked at involving the headsets themselves didn't help me make any sort of decision. So I eventually decided to look at the controllers, which brought me here. I think you gave it a very fair comparison, and honestly, I'd still be stuck on deciding which one if it weren't for the fact that you brought up the touch pads. I have a steam controller and the right touch pad is the only reason it's a dust collector. I think I'll consider the Rift.

Not sure what you mean but light house is simply more precise and less prone to occlusion than Oculus constellation tracking. That said Constellation is faster to set up for front facing , does not need power sockets but needs long usb cables and once you get 3 or 4 cams constellation is effectively indistinguishable from constellation for home use. I think constellation will eventually be abandoned for inside out tracking where as light house will probably keep being used many applications not just VR but anything that needs ultra precise tracking. I think home VR mind you will probably end up being inside out in most cases within 5 years or so.

The main thing that bugs me about the Steam controller/Vive, is the touch pad control. Never have been a fan of touch pads.. Not on laptops, don't even really like touchscreens on phones or in cars.. Always preferred controls/switches with tactile feedback.. I want a VR headset with the comfortable motion controls of the Oculus rift, the superior tracking of the HTC Vive, and the more comfortable headset with RGB display and conventional lenses of the PSVR (only with higher resolution of course).

That's true I did say in the video I can see how its good and bad , I guess one advantage of lithium battery would be that stronger rumble could be used as having the batter run out under 10 hours would not be an issue.

It last sooooooooooo long. And recharge in less than an hour. I use chargers that come with the VIVE, I plug them and they are usually 80% within 15 minutes and 30 minutes for full or so. They recharge way damn fast. The charge speed is greatly reduced tho if plugged to a powerbar, but my powerbar is a shitty one so...

I don't think the vive can really hold a candle to the touch controllers 2-3 week long battery life. Though you really only need like 8 hours of use, any more is over kill. I guess one other advantage the touch has is that the batteries wont loose there maximum charge over time, but that would take a while and a fair bit of miss charging.

T Dub if you mostly play non made for VR games and simulators it's best to get rift and save money. if you want room scale VR games then it depends a lot on head shape and how much you care about the lenses + aspects of the tracking as to which is better for you. You need to try both HMD's a lot of which one is best comes down to shape of your face and your priorities. In general I personally prefer the lenses wider FOV and brighter screen on the VIVE along with the lighthouse tracking. But If you can get the rift for cheaper and set it up well it can be really good and if you dont mind the lower FOV or prefer a lighter HMD + the built in headphones it might be better. I would say ether headset you go for you should buy it from Amazon or a store where you can easily get it replaced should it have issues as HTC especially have terrible customer service.

And you get the feeling that you don't use controllers. And their helmet looks finished, at HTC Vive as a prototype, not a finished model. The only plus with the HTC Vive is in the base stations and more precisely that you don't need so many free usb ports on your computer and additional tracking devices. Not for Oculus Rift. PS: And now I remember. Problem with spare helmet cables. I just wanted to send mine for lack of sound and a little twisted cable and realized that they stopped selling them. At least that's what they told me where I bought it from, and with Oculus Rift cables it is very expensive, not standard but combined HDMI and USB in a common jack.

What does, "Makes you feel like you're holding on to something tangible" even mean? Because it's heavier than the OR controllers? Both controllers are "actually something you're holding on to". It's all about what you get used to. "How real it feels in your hand" is not empirical data. "This air feels more real in your lungs than that air, because this air is more humid" ???
@GamerMuscleVideos
@GamerMuscleVideos 7 жыл бұрын
The rift controllers are designed to try and be as invisible as possible , in that they melt into your hands and most games using touch represent your hands in game to give hand presence. The Vive controllers are more designed to be like a tool that you also see in VR and so rather than giving direct hand presence they achieve the goal of feeling as if you are holding the same controller but in vr. generally speaking, when it comes to the Oculus controllers and the new not yet released valve knuckles controllers the lighter the better as that makes them less noticeable in your hands.

@GamerMuscleVideos
@GamerMuscleVideos 7 жыл бұрын
The idea of oculus controllers is that they melt into your hand , in most oculus games they basically are your hands and so you want them to be as light as possible. The vive controllers are like a tool you hold onto, so when you are holding a gun for example or a tool in game that uses the vive controller shape it makes that tool or gun feel more solid and real in some ways. Rift controllers feel better when you use in game character hands and vive controller feels better when you are using an ingame tool. hope thats more clear and explains things better !

It pains me to admit that the Vive donut does indeed seem to provide better occlusion resistence. Before I got Touch we were told that one of the benefits of two front facing cameras or a 3 or 4 camera setup where at least two cameras always saw the controller was occlusion resistence for very close hand interaction. In practice though, If I occlude say my left controller with my right controller from the point of view of my right camera, I get the controller drifting a couple of virtual inches until it snaps back when I un-occlude that controller, this despite the fact that 2 of my other cameras can still see the occluded controller. That said, with the Vive controllers I wouldn't have to worry about controller drifting when I bring them together because the donuts mean physically they can't be brought that close together anyway so its kinda moot. However, it was one of the advantages we were told Touch would have over the Vive controllers that it turned out not to have after all. Doesn't change the fact though that in all respects that matter to me, I much prefer the Touch controllers.

thats it im not getting htc vive.... i have oculus and windows mixed and on windows i didnt like the battery time and they have 10+ hours with one charge! oculus only takes 1 battery per controller and they reach for me upwards to 20-30 hours lifetime--- yesterday i did a 12hours livestream so i didnt needed to put any cables onto my controllers restricting my immersion! I nope out for htc vive.... altough im getting the base stations and some trackers to use fullbody in VRChat :D with oculus :D

The reason the haptic feedback or "rumble" feels weaker in the oculus is because they only use 1AA as a power source. That's 1.5 volts which isn't much. Additionally any significant use would quickly drain the battery.

To be honest, doubt you could notice the difference in weight between a AA battery + bracket and a lithium cell + charging port + charging circuits. That said, yeah, it's kind of a bummer that they use a AA instead of a rechargable battery... But at least the AA is replazable.

I like the oculus rift controllers better by far because it feels more like I’m using my hands and when you grab a pistol or knife or anything in a VR game it feels like you’re holding onto that. I don’t know why Vive made there controller like remotes because it doesn’t feel like you’re using your hands. That kind of controller looks like it would only feel good if you were using a sword. Unfortunately I can’t play as many games with oculus rift as I can play with htc Vive. Guess I have to get the vive

mark greenberg Oculus. The grip controls are much better, an analog stick is easier to use, and they’re much, much cheaper. The only downside is not quite 360 tracking with the included 2 sensors. However, for an extra 80 bucks (which still puts you below the vive price) you can get an extra sensor for room scale and full 360.

First of all, before i start Commenting: I Used the Oculus Rift with 2 Sensors and the Touch Controllers for around 2 Weeks...now switched to the HTC Vive with those GOD Awefull Wand Controllers just because i wanted to have Full Body Tracking (with the additional Vive Trackers)...so i know what iam Talking About - so save any "Bla Bla you are Fanboy" Comments! Even without watching the Video, i can say, there IS NO Comparison here, the Vive Wands are amongs the worst Controllers ever made! And compared to the Oculus Touch Controllers, they are HORSESHIT! There is a reason why People all over the Internet wish, that they could use the Touch Controllers in combination with their Vive HMD. Vive Wands feel like holding a damn brick in your Hands! The Controllers are supposed to transfer your "Real Hands" to the Virtual Environment, to be your "Hands" there, the Wands NEVER achive this, while on the other Hand the Touch Controllers feel so much more Natural, if you want to grab something….well grab on the Controller like you grab something in real life, this will make you press the sidetrigger automaticly, and since the touchs sensors are able to figure out where your fingers are (Closed or open) if Translates a Gazillion Times better into Games than what the Vive Wands could EVER Achive! Also, cant even let go of the Wands without dropping them, while you can do so with the touch Conrollers, thanks to their Design, this makes interacting in Social Apps like VRChat a thousand Times more natural than with the Vive Wands! You want to Wave your Hands at someone? (again VRChat) with the Touch just Wave at him like you would do in Real Life! (No Button needed)And with the Wands? Well.....Grab on to your Controller (you have to do that anyway or else youll drop it) and Press the Trigger, while Waving that Brick of a Controller...…..) Also in some of the Comments i read about the Comparison regarding Batteries / Battery Life....and here there is again NO FRIGGIN Comparison! The Touch Blows the Wands out of the Water here too! In those 2 Weeks of Using the Touch Controllers with the Rift, they NEVER died on me while playing! After using them for around 1 Week or so (around 6 to 8 Hours per day!) batteries were a Little low , so i just swapped them for a fully charged pair of Eneloop rechargeable Batteries (1900Mah) and was Ready to Play on! Compared to this, the 3-4 Hours battery Life of the Wands are a JOKE - a BAD Joke - (Maybe a Little longer or Shorter depending on the usage) Yesterday i was having some good fun in VRChat, many People gathered together and we were doing some crazy shit - well that Fun ended when the Wand Batteries DIED on me, Forcing me to end my Playing Season, with the Touch Controllers that woulndt be a Problem, quickly swap the Batteries, and Keep having Fun! Not Possible with the Vive cucumbers - so this is not just a minor Issue, no thats a TREMENDOUS Disadvantage over the Battery Situation on the Touch Side. Than we have the "Valve Knuckles" on the Horizon (Maybe?) those would eliminate most of the Disadvantages of the Wands compared to the Touch Controllers, BUT Right now, those Knuckles seem to be Powered by internal Batteries too, so one of the Serious Drawbacks will still be there! If only Valve would decide to ditch that Internal Battery Bullshit, and also go for AA Batteries like the Touch Controllers! THAN they would not just be equal but WAY Supperior to the Touch Controllers (at least from all the Informations we have Right now for the Knuckles). And last but not least, Movement in Games......with Touchpads.....Gaming on Phones SUCK because Touch Controlls SUCK, so what does HTC do?....slap a Touchpad on the Wands instead of or at least together with a Thumbstick….THIS ALONE allready is reason why the Wands are not even in the same League with the Touch Controllers. Played a few Games including VRChat with the Wands...and yea well, Walking / Running around is HORRIBLE, ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE, iam not even going into Details About why, it is easy, Thumbsticks are MANDATORY for everything that wants to be called a Controller, without, it is NOT a Controller, but HORSESHIT. Therefore Walking / Runing around with the Touch Controllers, NO PROBLEM! With the Wands BIG PROBLEM! if it wasnt for the Full Body Tracking with the Vive Trackers, i would have sticked to the Rift + Touch Controllers, or would immediately sell the Vive and buy a Rift Bundle again, this is the ONE Big Issue that i have with Occulus, the one Thing i HATE them for! knowing that there is a demand for Full Body Tracking, but not delivering a solution for that, forcing Rift Users to switch to Vive if they want that, what IDIOTS must they be to leave that field for HTC!

I have mine set up in a triangle shape, one is in the on the right side of my pc and one on the left side about 5 or 6 feet apart from each other and the third sensor is behind my left shoulder (if I'm facing my pc) on a bookshelf. And as I said in my comment I don't seem to have any tracking issues what so ever, and as far as the guy saying fast or erratic movements cause the touches to lose tracking I have not had this problem even with Sairento VR, this is a ninja game in which you swing around swords and your constantly turning in all directions and again no tracking loss what so ever good luck with your setup and have fun in room scale bro. Oh also don't worry about buying a usb extender cable oculus sends you a ten foot one along with the third sensor.
