As a collector of retro systems, I have just about everything, including the rare obscure stuff. Panasonic Q, Neo-Geo AES, Neo-Geo CDZ, SuperGrafx, TG-16 CD add-on, Turbo Duo, Atari Jaguar, Jaguar CD add-on. I was lucky enough to get them years ago before prices went crazy. The one I missed out on and just can’t afford anymore would be the Nintendo 64DD. Years ago I could’ve grabbed it for about $400, now they’re $1,200-$1,500. Great video as always.

Impressive collection! There aren't many system collectors out there so your comment sticks out. I am also a hardware collector and I had to own the overpriced systems at some point. But I had to pay the high prices for a Supergrafx, FM Towns Marty and an Amiga CD32. The last console I got was a PC FX. I know that this may sound like a useless collection to someone collecting just Nintendo or Sega consoles. But it feels incredible to see and play those failed and unknown systems.

@@Oribaa90 A big part of why I collect them is because as a kid, I would always see these systems in magazines and they always looked so awesome and I could never afford them as a kid or they weren’t released in the States. The PC FX is one I don’t have yet, but I’m gonna grab one soon as they’re still pretty affordable. I’m assuming you’re getting the Analogue Duo? I’m friggin psyched for mine to finally arrive.

I don't have a category 4, but only because I'm patient and will save for everything to make it a reality; I have no limit, so nothing's off the table. I don't have many left to get in that 'thousands of dollars' per game tier, play everything I buy, and am not after games for the sake of them being expensive; being a great game is the only criteria for being on my list regardless of price or difficulty to obtain. I will say that - after 30+ years - I'm on the back end of my retro collecting, and that light at the end of the tunnel is a relief to my wallet, lol. Great topic, great video (as always); thanks Retro Bird!!!

I bought "The Misadventures of Tron Bonne" new, played it, and sold it to a local game store in the early 2000s for a few bucks. Some years later, I was shocked to find out it was now worth hundreds, moving it firmly into the "never going to rebuy it" category.

Just emulate it or get it on vita. The game sucks. I also bought it when it first released back in the PS1 days, because I loved the MegaMan legends series, but I just didn't get into Tron Bonne. Ended up putting it away in storage until about 2021 when I went to just sell my PS1 games and to my delight it was worth something like 400+. Sold it on eBay for 700 actually and whle a part of me feels kind of gross about that, the guy was obviously a collector who was willing to part with the money once he saw the pristine condition of that shitty game.

My category 3 console is a Pioneer LaserActive. I'm already a big fan of the LaserDisc format and have multiple LaserDisc players. It's not a real expensive home video format. But it seems that the LaserActive is the most sought after model, not because it's the best LaserDisc player ever, it definitely isn't, but just because it can play games. It tends to be the only LaserDisc player that game collectors want, so LaserActives are worth a lot more than most LaserDisc players. Just the Sega and Turbografx pacs alone are worth hundreds. I've come close to pulling the trigger on one. Maybe some day...

Guess a copy of Battlesphere Gold for the Atari Jaguar is something I will never buy. Not only is it exceptionally rare and priced around 1000 bucks, I would not even know what an original of this would really look like, as there are so many reproductions out there and confusing information as to what came with the original back in the day.

I collected physical Sega Saturn games about 15 years ago and even then prices of games were creeping up rapidly. The games I did own I cherished and were a lot of fun. Sadly, I sold my collection years later (can't remember why), but those same games now most likely cost twice as much as when I paid for them back then. I think the most expensive Saturn game I had was a boxed version of Saturn Bomberman. It cost me around $50 or $60 alone, but I enjoyed the game immensely. I've heard that it is quite the pricey game now if you can find it. Oh, and Retro Bird had the same idea as me. Banjo-Kazooie is one of my favorite 3d platformers, too, and I would do almost anything for a remaster of it (maybe throw in Tooie remastered as well). Crash and Spyro got excellent remasters, so I can only imagine how awesome a remaster of the Banjo games would be in this day and age!

There's a lot of systems I wanted to get back when I was a kid but didn't have the money to get them at that point in time & now that I do have the money to buy them. I don't want them. So it be the Sega CD, Sega 32 X, Sega Saturn, Sega Dream Cast, Atari Jaguar, Turbo Graphx 16, The Neo Geo, The Panasonic 3D0. At that said time I wanted these. I was more hooked & addicted to video games back then. Now I don't even care to play a lot of games as I will just play the ones I like now. I do buy a lot of games now just because I can but I won't pay full price for them. Story time: Speaking about arcades, I used to go to them back in the 90's & I would waste my money playing them wasting my quarters because I was addicted to like every game I saw back in the day. Now I went to a video game arcade bar where you pay a set fee of $10 & you get to play arcade cabinets all you want because they set them to free play. What I found out is that I don't like arcade Joysticks at all. It never used to bother me when I was a kid but now it bothers me a lot that I have to play arcade games with console controllers.

Just about any expensive game is "Category 4" to me. I am a very cheap retro collector, so anything $200 and above is far too expensive for me. It generally works- there is the chance of prices going down, and if they don't, I'm aware of the numerous other, affordable games that I'm also interested in giving a try and buying all of instead rather than spending the same amount of money on a single expensive game. Also, I'm aware of the "trash and treasure" principle and how it relates to a no-name game potentially ballooning into being a hidden gem of the new age. This actually happened with an infamous Wii shovelware title known as Sukeban Shachou Rena. I TRULY lucked out on this one. When I bought it, I paid the price of what a normal Wii game would be, to a seller that wasn't aware of how unpopular (and by extension, rare) it was. Not only did I get the game cheap, I also made the most of the game, 100%ing it for the first time in 2020, and I think I'm the first and still the only player to ever do so for this game that came out in 2009. The price has since ballooned to a Category 4 game, in the league of regularly costing 4 figures! That's a huge increase, especially for a Japanese game, which typically go down in price and flatline. I also got a Virtual Boy earlier this year. I was mentally prepared to pay higher prices than usual, as well as buy games like Jack Bros. (which I got in Japanese for a decent price by the standards of that game) thanks to the limited library. I had enough money saved for it and I feel I earned it. Plus I have no regrets, considering that I absolutely loved playing the Virtual Boy.

The fact you said Category 4 is "$200 and up" makes me cry, because that's still higher than mine. There's a few $100-150 games that may be category 3 for me, but above that is too much. I've never spent over $60 on a game so far though lol. The Sega Dreamcast has a lot of category 3 for me, but the Saturn is full of category 4 lol.

@@NottJoeyOfficial It's not that I'm poor, I'm just frugal. I'm regularly employed and can afford current-gen full-priced games if I want, but I don't want them. Most of my favorites have been cheaper games, and they have the least risks to begin with, usually being popular which makes them inexpensive and therefore unlikely to disappoint, plus more likely to go up in price after I buy them if they're not well known which makes it worth it, so that's what I go for. And plus, I usually stick to cheaper Japanese copies anyway, which are no problem for me. And in the case where they are, the good ones end up getting re-released and reproduction carted anyway, such as the recent Mr. Gimmick Remaster on Switch and PS.

The top of my category 4 list is not a video game, but a pinball machine. The Addams Family Pinball would be amazing, but it's quite expensive, and there's also the lack of space and whatever upkeep a pinball machine needs, so it's just beyond me. The only saving grace, I suppose, is the emulation of it in the original Pinball FX game. So as long as it doesn't get pulled from Steam, and Steam doesn't go away, I'm slightly covered.

My father and I used to buy and sell pinball/video arcade machines in the late 90s, mainly as a hobby. We'd fix them, play them until we get bored with them and then sell them and make a few bucks profit. We had an Addams Family pinball, Paperboy, Ms. Pac-man with original artwork, Operation Wolf, T2, you name it, even an Outrun like Retrobird mentioned. We were lucky enough to have held on to a few, but I cringe when I see what some of the stuff we let go goes for now. The Addams Family is a good example of that.

:10 Yup, me as well if I collected NES games. A game that slipped from 4 to 3 was Panzer Dragoon Saga. Those were a rough few months after I bought it. Then there's the PSX (the DVR PS2, not the original PSX), which is also a 4 for me, due to how many of them end up breaking down and me not really having a good place to maintain them. Similarly, the original PS3s. That said, there is also the fact that I have multiple PS1/2/3 games of different regions. An all in one solution would be nice, and I know that while the PS3 is region free, that only go as far as PS3 games are concerned, and not PS1/2 games. Other games that are teetering between 3 and 4 are more Saturn games for me. Astra Superstars, Guardian Heroes, and Dragon Force comes to mind.

The MSX2 is a random 8 bit Japanese console that actually was a keyboard computer that could also play games. Graphics wise it was closer to the PC Engine, and it had a much better version of Aleste 1, and exclusives like Aleste 2 and Aleste Gaiden. MUSHA was the Aleste game made right after 2, to give some context, so these were the direct prequels to MUSHA. But even if you bought a MSX2 I'm not even sure I could hook it up to any of my TVs, and since it's so old it may not even work, and the games are also super expensive. Hopefully M2 will release an Aleste Collection for the MSX2. Fun fact, the original 2 Metal Gear games were on the MSX2. And also the original Puyo Puyo.

Love this video! Honestly, some games I just won't ever be able to get physical are games like Earthbound, a complete copy of Pokémon Soul Silver or the Wii Version of Dokapon Kingdom Complete. I have others, but they are what I'd call category 5: Unless I get stinking rich someday, I'm never getting this one. And that game and console are a NEO GEO and Neo Turf Masters. I will say, I've been a collector for over a decade now, and I've got most of the games that might have been a 4 or 5 in my collection already. Having a complete copy of Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn are very nice. Having a Wii U and most 1st party titles for that I'm guessing will only go up in price over time here.

If we include computers and not just consoles, category 4 for me at the moment is the Acorn Archimedes/RISC PC line of computers - the line of computers for which the ARM CPU was developed. They're incredibly interesting from a historical standpoint - but they're British computers from the early 90s. Getting them in the US would be pricey, and then you need power and video conversion and they all used proprietary mice and keyboards that nobody makes replacements for. And then compatibility from one version to the next was pretty rough so you can't have /just one/ Archimedes .... A PC Engine used to be category 4 for me until I learned about japanese auction proxies. Also, I sold a ton of old games that I was hoarding to fund a set of everdrives. Critical for the PC Engine because finding a working CD ROM2 unit is starting to get really hard.

Every NeoGeo game is in category 4 for me. My biggest games are Snatcher and Panzer Dragoon Saga. Those should be category 4, but I had to and I found a good deal. My ultimate though would be a sealed copy of the Apple 2 version of Maniac Mansion. It's my favorite game ever.

Games and systems that are in Category 4: Neo-Geo and pretty much it’s entire library 😢 Also, Little Samson, Bucky O’ Hare(that one really hurts!) and The Flinstones: Surprise at Dinosaur Peak.(the cheapest one I saw was over 800 dollars!!!😮). Actually I changed my mind about Bucky O’ Hare. It’s doable but not for quite a while. It’s more Category 3 I guess 😊 Some of those rare NES games can be quite expensive!!

Great video as always RetroBird. For my answer it is the Limited Run Games Version of Shantae and the Pirates Curse on Switch. I feel like I'm being greedy as I already managed to nab a physical copy of the 3ds version at a gamestop a couple years back but I'd love to have the switch version physically but that price is a non starter for me. Another one is gatcha force on the gamecube and rhythm thief on the 3ds. It's just far too high. One that was a category 4 that fell to a 3 were the 2 smt devil summoner games on the ps2. I managed to have some money at the time about bought those 2 games, though I probably wouldn't make that same purchase again for how much I ended up paying.

For cat4, definitely a 2 player racing arcade. Heck, 4 players would be even nicer! Unless life does a 180, I know that will never happen due to the obvious reasons: space and money. I did play Daytona USA in a 4 player setup with 4 computers and steering wheels, it's was simply the best experience!

Those category 4 games I can't/couldn't afford don't really exist for me. There are so many other games out there (retro and new games) , that I even start losing having interest for unpayable games. If I put category 4 to the consoles/arcade machines type, than it is a whole different story. I could definitely afford an arcade cabinet or pinball machine, but there's no chance to put it in my apartment. That space is already occupied by my music instruments 😂. The Neogeo falls in a between category 3 and 4 type of things. The reason here to say no in this case, there are nowadays so many ways to play the games. But again, arcade machines are definitely my weak point and just unreachable.

My category 4 items, aside from the obvious Neo Geo and a TMNT Arcade cabinet, are Snatcher on Sega CD and Magic Night Rayearth on Saturn. A local shop has a mint copy of the latter signed by a member of the dev team and it's an eternal taunt every time I visit.

Category 1 is so underrated. I've paid as little as $5 for some of my favorite games. Granted, that was a while ago, but you just have to look around to find good games cheap. I bought Hagane for SNES and I've probably got less than 5 hours in it. R-type final: paid $5 and have put over 100 hours into it.

I wish I bought more Mega CD games when they were still affordable. There's stuff like Final Fight CD, Keio Flying Squadron and the US Sega CD Flashback that I'd love to own, but I'll never be able to justify to myself these days. Thankfully, I did buy Snatcher back then, and only spent £30 on it, which seems ludicrous now. I'd also love a copy of Burning Rangers, but I've made my peace with the thought of that never happening. I have treated myself to a few expensive wishlist games a couple of times in the last few years. While they're not Panzer Dragoon Saga expensive, Kirby's Adventure, Sexy Parodius and the Japanese Metal Gear Solid Premium Package were all fairly indulgent purchases that I sold a bunch of games to buy. I'm really glad to own them, though. It is worth allowing yourself to go for some of those big "maybe someday" games every now and then, if you can find a way to do it without breaking the bank.

For older consoles/games, my category 4 is the Neo-Geo Gold set cib and Earthbound. I've been on the hunt for years on both, but I couldn't find a price worthy of my money. I still have a hope for finding Earthbound loose at a considerable price, but 20+ years is wishful thinking. Newer stuff tends to be in that $60+ range. I waited until last week to hunt down a Tears of the Kingdom. Found it $25 under msrp, and I bit the bullet. You could say that ended up a category 3 because there's no way I'm comfortable spending that much.

I don't really collect very many retro games compared to some people and just use an everdrive/modded consoles for a lot of my library that aren't more modern games. Or even emulation with retro game emulation consoles. For my Category 4? I'd be interested in adding a CIB copy of Earthbound to my collection, but yeah that's never gonna happen. It's just too expensive and I can't justify it, which sucks because I really love the game. Super Metroid and Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask CIB would be a Category 3 for me. F-Zero and Super Mario Bros. 3 CIB definitely hit that Category 2. Anything Category 1, I've probably already given to my impulses and picked it up on ebay. I really love having CIB copies of my favorite games of all time. It brings me a lot of joy to stare at then, pick them up, maybe look through the contents. I like having physical things that remind me of my favorite things. I guess that's why I only collect so many games, and I try to get them in nice condition.
@rummyraisin

Interesting reflections. I know what you mean about owning CIB games! For me, getting Gamecube games in this state is important, probably in large part because that was my first console and these games were like literal gold bars to my kid imagination (and still somewhat to this day). But when it comes to SNES, N64 or really any other Nintendo game, it doesn't bother me at all going for cart only. Maybe it's something about the ephemerality of a cardboard box, or my lack of direct memories. And probably also because most CIB Nintendo carts verge into my category 4 😅

For me, very few games that I want would fall in the category 4. Many would fall in category 3 though. The only ones I could think of that would be category 4 for me would be games like the Nintendo World Championship. Hundreds, I can conceivably save up for that. But when we start getting into the thousands…Something near the lower end of the thousands could still be a very high 3, but when it gets into the high thousands…that’s just too much.

Earthbound was/is a category 4 as I’m sure it is for a lot of people. I actually made a friend who was also interested in video games and still loves Earthbound, but he gave me his original copy he got from a second hand store when he was young simply because he told me he’ll probably never plug in his Super Nintendo to play it after he’s found more convenient ways to emulate it. He knew I was into collecting so he had no issue contributing to what I’d essentially my centerpiece next to my a virtual boy I found at an estate sale. True lifetime homie for that one.

The rarest system I own has to be my Mario White New 3DS, one of the only times the regular sized N3DS was released in the US. It's not crazy rare, but it's pretty uncommon and I was one of the lucky bastards fast enough to snag one on Black Friday 20...15? 2016? before they sold out. My rarest game though, that's trickier. I've got Sonic Jam and Burning Rangers for Saturn, but they're the Japanese versions so nowhere near as expensive as the US copies. I've got the US physical PC release of Portal 2, again not super rare but a cool uncommon novelty. I've also got some weird alternate exclusive or "NOT FOR RESALE" copies of games like Star Fox Assault which has a BlockBuster cover art behind the official cover art, as well as a copy of Metroid Other M marked for "IN STORE USE ONLY, NOT FOR RESALE" so that's neat. It might come down to Xenogears, at least, that's the one I spent the most to buy used recently- $109.99USD, most I've ever spent on one single base game.

A couple of years ago, I had to sell them to help pay some big important bills. My wife cautioned me with a fact I already knew: I'd never be able to get them back. I miss them.
