Most open world games don't respect your time. I'm at point where I now cannot stand playing open world games because a majority of them are filler side quests and traversal. And by filler side quests, I'm not talking about actual side missions; I'm referring to the ones where you collect one item and then the game tells you to go collect 50 more of them spread across the map. Absolutely cannot stand them.

It's my problem with most Bethesda games. I feel like all I'm doing in those games is just wasting time running around the open world following quest markers. Open world games just aren't for me except for a few very specific ones.

I definitely agree on Red Dead 2, it IS a great but….there there is SO MUCH damn horse riding, so much busy work & side quests. But the story is so engrossing it’s worth it, I very nearly wish this was a 2-3 hour movie or a Netflix mini series.

So glad to see RDR2 here. Anytime there’s a legit criticism of this game, people freak out, but it absolutely wastes your time a bunch. It’s always funny to me that people decry games for walking sections when this game has the most walking sections I’ve seen in a game and the whole farming section in the epilogue made me want to delete it. And that’s on top of the brutally long animations for everything. It’s not a bad game, just not perfect like people want to pretend it is.

Xenoblades is a series where I turned it to story mode and never regretted it. The fights take so long that I was OK with making them easier just to get through it quicker. I want to see the story, characters, world building, not 20 minute fights. Even then it took a long time to beat and they never shut the hell up during the fights. Though I found out later there are ways around that.

It doesnt matter how good they are because most of us have backlogs and life outside of gaming. Nothing will make me ragequit like a turn based JRPG with overly long animations and overly long randomized battles. I can lose a Soulslike boss battle and not even flinch, but something about having to restart a drawn out turn based battle cause I got some bad RNG just grinds my gears. Also, I know a dude who only plays Apex Legends and Survival games. Lol, he's a sucker for time sinks.
@Rpm2878
@Rpm2878 Ай бұрын
I've enjoyed some JRPGs but most of them are extremely guilty of this, especially the lower budget niche games. 5 hours of game, 20-30 hour long VN/cutscenes, 50+ hours of level grinding along the way so you can beat the final boss and then there might be a post-game, where the real grind begins.

Far Cry 2 is paradoxical. One of its most important aspects is how you get around the map. If you just use the roads with loud and obvious cars, you'll run into a lot of trouble, but it will be relatively fast. But if you go slow and stealthy that can take a lot of time. Some of my best moments with the game were from just slowly travelling around the map breathing in the atmosphere, but it can also easily get tedious. I think a lot of people just don't understand FC2, but there are good reasons why one may just not enjoy it.

A game that I absolutely love but does not respect your time for the first act is Cyberpunk 2077. Everytime you made a new character you would have to play through the same 1-2 hour intro doing the same thing and listening to the same dialogue. It used to be worse on release because of braindances

Elden Ring does the horse back riding perfectly. You get to fast travel after discovering every Lost grace so it doesn’t feel too bad. Plus, you stop a lot to explore in caves/dungeons or fighting groups of enemies. I never once felt like traveling was a slog in that game.

You may as well shove one of the persona's onto this list. As much as I LOVE the games, the ones before 5 (especially 4) do a lot of overtalking for little to no reason other than to stretch the game out and it's obvious in the re releases of the games. At least 5 can get behind the fact that the game needs all of that overexplaining to make most sense out of that game, 3 and 4 overstay their welcome, especially with the answer and the golden ending.

Funny because I couldn't disagree more, not when it comes to Persona but when it comes to the games you chose. To me this was never a big problem BEFORE Persona 5. I feel like 5 is the one that has the most amount of redundant dialog with characters repeating the same things and objectives over and over again during different periods of the day and then across multiple days. To me Persona has been treating it's audience as 9 year old kids more and more each new game. It's been getting progressively worse since Persona 3. Thankfully Metaphor seems to be reducing this a bit.
@ryoung6518
@ryoung6518 Ай бұрын
I also disagree about Persona 5. I think it takes way too long to open up and repeats the same things to you constantly before the first boss fight like it thinks the players are too dumb to understand what's going on. You have to go back and forth to the gym teachers palace so many times before you get to do a proper run and to me the P5 kinda overstays its welcome too. I was done with the game after the first final boss I didn't want to have to fight the "real" final boss for another 10-20 hours D:
@titaniumcranium3755
@titaniumcranium3755 Ай бұрын
You both have presented valid arguments against the 5th installment to which I have a confession to make. I am slightly biased against 4 due to the cliché over anime-ness of everything compared to 3's mature tone, and I unfairly blamed 5's shortcomings on the 4th game. But yes, as a whole these games do have a problem with needlessly wasting the player's time when they can just summarize the previous events. Now with the arguments presented against me above, I think it's safe to say that 5 is a bit more guilty of this, seeing as they repeat the objective for kamoshida multiple times.

Unless it's telltale, you aren't going to get 1 shit from me if you only focused on story and have mediocre gameplay. The first red dead's horse riding has infinite stamina, you can so easily exploit it. You can also fast travel from anywhere on the map except towns (and those have stagecoaches which fast travel anyway). The game does not respect your time either, in fact the entire game just wasted my time with mediocre and repetive gameplay. There is more that gets in the way of RDR2's pacing than just the riding, like the slow animations for everything, having to eat and clean yourself regularly, having to feed and groom your horse, having to clean your guns, having to change your clothes according to climate, and I don't remember exactly, but I think you also have to sleep sometimes? There's just too many of these little time wasting things that keep stacking up. Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga was too long. Having 23 explorable planets was great especially with new planets such as Exegol and Cantonica but there did not need to be 1200 kyber bricks plus a lot of the puzzles to obtain them were the same such as shooting 4 targets within a time limit. Not to mention multiple times having to leave the planet you are on to find certain people or gather certain resources, those smuggling missions, and having to still pay for characters that you went through trouble to unlock. Also Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Assassin's Creed Valhalla went too overboard with the open world content and story grinding.

I agree with some of these points made. Open world games are about exploring and taking your time to mess around; I don't think they are meant to be ran through. I do think that some have pacing issues. AC Valhalla was way too much compared to Ghost of Tsushima, but I kind of expect this from UBISOFT games at this point. Also, you don't actually have to invest time in a game if it's consuming all your time. You could just play a 2nd game shorter/fast paced while tackling the longer one. I handle books like this.

Xenoblade for sure, just not in the way people think. I actually think the main story is actually always kinda good about it because you always get a reward for moving on. But the 100% experience is always just insane. What feels like bottomless grinding, constant travels back and fourth(the low movement speed really hurts then), having to check guides all the time because almost always, the game is supremely unhelpful in finding certain materials you need. Etc, etc. About half of it could be cut out and still have you experience all meaningful content.

I haven't played with all these games, but yea based on my experience I actually get this list. Especially when you brought up Pokemon, the part where you said every step there is an instant battle. Which from one point makes sense, but also can get to a point that is annoying. FFX is an offender in this department too. It's one of the reasons I have sort of intentionally avoided most FF games. Also DK64, as much as I liked that game as a kid, I totally get the frustration with that game. I do agree with RDR2, like it is not at all like GTA 5 where at least driving is a bit faster and fast travel is more available in that game. As far as I remember RDR2 you can't instantly get fast travel and even still it isn't quite as accessible as GTA 5.

For Days Gone, I think it's the opening that killed me. I almost gave up on it but glad I didn't. It almost felt like the devs found their footing halfway through and finally realized what kind of game they wanted to make. The first 30-40% of the game felt like they were almost trying to make this live-service or State of Decay Survival game, wiping out enemy outposts and hives, collecting, building up outposts, trading, doing bounties.... those are the low points in the game and while that stuff still exists in the later parts of the game, the main narrative took over more and it felt more balanced. If some of that bloat was cut, this game would be much better. I almost wish the devs would patch out like 50% of pointless side quests and then just double the EXP of the remaining ones. Easy fix. As it stands, it's still one of my favorite games. Witcher on Wheels!

I think the "bloat" issue is overblown in most games, including Assassin's Creed games. Like, 80% of the content is optional, it's not like Dragon Age Inquisiton that forces the player to do side content to farm a currency that allows them to do main quests (Power).

Disney Speedstorm should’ve been added to the list. It’s too pay to win and it’s too grindy that games cost me to give myself time to try out other games. I did quit Disney Speedstorm 2 months ago because the game wants me to pay for 2 golden passes & Ennui the mid season is locked behind a paywall. The moment Ennui was locked behind a paywall it pissed me off to the point that I ended up quitting Speedstorm for good the moment season 8 part 2 ended.

Days Gone was going to be my comment for a game that felt like a bit of a time waster

I agree with red dead redemption and days gone. I got bored of rdr2 because of the slow poke travelling and sometimes they do have too much dialogue when travelling and the horse will slow down. Also there are too many missions to do too. In days gone, the last camp which is the military became tedious for me. Both are great games no doubt but they have flaws too.

A random idea had is for games that really want to be books (Cyberpunk 2077, Mass Effect) (that also takes time and has almost nothing to do with the game itself). Why don't they just create an app or YT Channel with the whole lore thing.

11:55 you can install teleport for RDR2. There is a mod. You just make a waypoint on the map and press F11 and it will teleport you anywhere you want it on the map. ( don't use it during active missions ). I think it comes with "Lenny's Simple Trainer." That is how I beaten the whole game. I would never finish this boring game without the teleport.

Mafia 3!!!! For sure with repetitive side missions. Good game when it’s just main story.

For me Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword was that game where I seriously asked myself why does it take so much time, they reused same locations and ideas, definitely big let down.

I personally enjoy single player games cuz they give me a sense of accomplishment. To each their own but I’m not a fan to games where u can sink an hour or two in it and accomplish nothing.

I would throw in the second half of MGSV: The Phantom Pain. Hundreds of side ops to complete, base management, repeated missions at tougher difficulties. Such a slog to get the true ending of the game.

To give Fortnite credit I honestly don’t think it’s battle pass is too bad, I log in maybe once or twice a week usually but I can usually get to tier 100 by the end of the season, it’s one of the few live service games with honestly pretty forgiving exp progression

Looking back on all the games I’ve ever played as of right now I’d say Overwatch 1 was the biggest time waster-which falls under the live service category. Back in 2016 when I started playing I got hooked and by the end of its life cycle I had upwards of 90 hours played as Reaper ALONE. In total I probably put close to 500 hours into the game and that’s time I’ll never see again. Sure we all had fun memories but that’s all they’ll ever be now is memories because they shut the first game down and replaced it with the shittier 2nd version which is really more like 1.5 but ANYWAYS let me not get started on how they ruined the sequel… and also I’d like to say as somebody who’s beat Red Dead 2 TWICE in its entirety, and did 100% completion on one of the runs, I thoroughly enjoyed the game but I do have to agree the horse riding could be cut in half or more of what it is. It’s a masterpiece of a game but I do agree with you there. Maybe for CHRISTMAS I can get some new games that won’t waste my time 🤔

Christmas. Cool list. While I also love RDR2, I'll agree that it eventually became a slog. The entire Guarma section of the game felt unnecessary. Lately, I'm finding more and more that games do not respect your time when trying to be a completionist. I know it's self inflicted since I hunt trophies, but some of the blatant padding that's put into trophy lists is egregious. While I love tower defense games, the Bloons TD5 platinum made me NEVER want to touch a tower defense game again. Lmao

In the case of Destiny 2 (as a live service example) this used to be the case but in a good way, now Destiny is formatted in a way that they actively want you to spend less time playing it because of how mindnumbingly boring the content cycle is now, they took the FFXIV approach of creating a game that is now designed to be played on and off however that was not the intention.
