Most open world games don't respect your time. I'm at point where I now cannot stand playing open world games because a majority of them are filler side quests and traversal. And by filler side quests, I'm not talking about actual side missions; I'm referring to the ones where you collect one item and then the game tells you to go collect 50 more of them spread across the map. Absolutely cannot stand them.

So glad to see RDR2 here. Anytime there’s a legit criticism of this game, people freak out, but it absolutely wastes your time a bunch. It’s always funny to me that people decry games for walking sections when this game has the most walking sections I’ve seen in a game and the whole farming section in the epilogue made me want to delete it. And that’s on top of the brutally long animations for everything. It’s not a bad game, just not perfect like people want to pretend it is.

Also, I know a dude who only plays Apex Legends and Survival games. Lol, he's a sucker for time sinks.
@Rpm2878Ай бұрын
I've enjoyed some JRPGs but most of them are extremely guilty of this, especially the lower budget niche games. 5 hours of game, 20-30 hour long VN/cutscenes, 50+ hours of level grinding along the way so you can beat the final boss and then there might be a post-game, where the real grind begins.
@burningsheep4473Ай бұрын
Far Cry 2 is paradoxical. One of its most important aspects is how you get around the map. If you just use the roads with loud and obvious cars, you'll run into a lot of trouble, but it will be relatively fast. But if you go slow and stealthy that can take a lot of time. Some of my best moments with the game were from just slowly travelling around the map breathing in the atmosphere, but it can also easily get tedious. I think a lot of people just don't understand FC2, but there are good reasons why one may just not enjoy it.

You may as well shove one of the persona's onto this list. As much as I LOVE the games, the ones before 5 (especially 4) do a lot of overtalking for little to no reason other than to stretch the game out and it's obvious in the re releases of the games. At least 5 can get behind the fact that the game needs all of that overexplaining to make most sense out of that game, 3 and 4 overstay their welcome, especially with the answer and the golden ending.

Funny because I couldn't disagree more, not when it comes to Persona but when it comes to the games you chose. To me this was never a big problem BEFORE Persona 5. I feel like 5 is the one that has the most amount of redundant dialog with characters repeating the same things and objectives over and over again during different periods of the day and then across multiple days. To me Persona has been treating it's audience as 9 year old kids more and more each new game. It's been getting progressively worse since Persona 3. Thankfully Metaphor seems to be reducing this a bit.
@ryoung6518Ай бұрын
I also disagree about Persona 5. I think it takes way too long to open up and repeats the same things to you constantly before the first boss fight like it thinks the players are too dumb to understand what's going on. You have to go back and forth to the gym teachers palace so many times before you get to do a proper run and to me the P5 kinda overstays its welcome too. I was done with the game after the first final boss I didn't want to have to fight the "real" final boss for another 10-20 hours D:
@titaniumcranium3755Ай бұрын
You both have presented valid arguments against the 5th installment to which I have a confession to make. I am slightly biased against 4 due to the cliché over anime-ness of everything compared to 3's mature tone, and I unfairly blamed 5's shortcomings on the 4th game. But yes, as a whole these games do have a problem with needlessly wasting the player's time when they can just summarize the previous events. Now with the arguments presented against me above, I think it's safe to say that 5 is a bit more guilty of this, seeing as they repeat the objective for kamoshida multiple times.

Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga was too long. Having 23 explorable planets was great especially with new planets such as Exegol and Cantonica but there did not need to be 1200 kyber bricks plus a lot of the puzzles to obtain them were the same such as shooting 4 targets within a time limit. Not to mention multiple times having to leave the planet you are on to find certain people or gather certain resources, those smuggling missions, and having to still pay for characters that you went through trouble to unlock. Also Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Assassin's Creed Valhalla went too overboard with the open world content and story grinding.

For Days Gone, I think it's the opening that killed me. I almost gave up on it but glad I didn't. It almost felt like the devs found their footing halfway through and finally realized what kind of game they wanted to make. The first 30-40% of the game felt like they were almost trying to make this live-service or State of Decay Survival game, wiping out enemy outposts and hives, collecting, building up outposts, trading, doing bounties.... those are the low points in the game and while that stuff still exists in the later parts of the game, the main narrative took over more and it felt more balanced. If some of that bloat was cut, this game would be much better. I almost wish the devs would patch out like 50% of pointless side quests and then just double the EXP of the remaining ones. Easy fix. As it stands, it's still one of my favorite games. Witcher on Wheels!

I don't want to buy Nier Automata, because I heard that you have to play through the story three times to really beat it

I don't care what anyone says. RDR 2 is a masterpiece, & i loved pretty much every minute of that game. The story, the characters, gameplay & immersive world was sum of the best gaming experiences I've had in recent years.

Hard agree on RDR2. Even like skinning animals is ridiculously time wasting

To give Fortnite credit I honestly don’t think it’s battle pass is too bad, I log in maybe once or twice a week usually but I can usually get to tier 100 by the end of the season, it’s one of the few live service games with honestly pretty forgiving exp progression

Looking back on all the games I’ve ever played as of right now I’d say Overwatch 1 was the biggest time waster-which falls under the live service category. Back in 2016 when I started playing I got hooked and by the end of its life cycle I had upwards of 90 hours played as Reaper ALONE. In total I probably put close to 500 hours into the game and that’s time I’ll never see again. Sure we all had fun memories but that’s all they’ll ever be now is memories because they shut the first game down and replaced it with the shittier 2nd version which is really more like 1.5 but ANYWAYS let me not get started on how they ruined the sequel… and also I’d like to say as somebody who’s beat Red Dead 2 TWICE in its entirety, and did 100% completion on one of the runs, I thoroughly enjoyed the game but I do have to agree the horse riding could be cut in half or more of what it is. It’s a masterpiece of a game but I do agree with you there. Maybe for CHRISTMAS I can get some new games that won’t waste my time 🤔

The first half of AC Valhalla was one of my favorite games, but I can't recommend it to anyone because the last half is just a repetitive slog

Proud of myself for assuming Days Gone would be on this list.

It's true but days gone is so good I didn't even mind the bloat

Christmas. Cool list. While I also love RDR2, I'll agree that it eventually became a slog. The entire Guarma section of the game felt unnecessary. Lately, I'm finding more and more that games do not respect your time when trying to be a completionist. I know it's self inflicted since I hunt trophies, but some of the blatant padding that's put into trophy lists is egregious. While I love tower defense games, the Bloons TD5 platinum made me NEVER want to touch a tower defense game again. Lmao

I agree with all the ppl in the comments on Red dead 2 I loved the game a lot and enjoyed finishing it but the slow ass “realistic “ picking up items and a bunch of the other things ppl mention too… really hoping gta 6 doesn’t keep any of those dumb “realism” slow animations

In the case of Destiny 2 (as a live service example) this used to be the case but in a good way, now Destiny is formatted in a way that they actively want you to spend less time playing it because of how mindnumbingly boring the content cycle is now, they took the FFXIV approach of creating a game that is now designed to be played on and off however that was not the intention.
