Hey whatup guys OSG here and this time we will be looking at games that I would say were better on the C64 than they were on the Amiga.
There’s no doubt that both of these commodore machines were great but some games were just that little bit better on the 8bit. Obviously we aren’t talking graphics here as the Amiga wiped the floor with the C64 in that respect but as I have found through my 35 years of gaming that a game isn’t all about looks…. You need good gameplay and great music too when you have those two things the graphics aren’t as important as you think.
This is a list of 17 games that in my opinion are better overall than the Amiga versions.

About Defender of the Crown. If I've understood it correct, the Amiga version was the first release of that franchise, meaning that the later versions had a more developed game design.

The Amiga version was rushed, planned features were left out. I guess they ran out of money and had to ship a stripped-down version. I guess the revenue from the Amiga version allowed them to produce the more complete versions that came after the Amiga version. There was also an upgraded Amiga version (I think it was for the CD32). Digital speech, more options during the siege, different gameplay. But, in my humble opinion, also less fun to play. I mean, you conquer all of England, no enemies remain...and the eradicated enemies still attach you, with decisive strength, and while you have wagonloads of money, you suddenly cannot buy any new troops anymore?

I was wondering if you were going to get to Wizball. It's always the first game I think of when asked what was better on the Commodore 64. Not to mention those awesome "guitar" riffs. We know it's the SID, but wow, what perfection.

Another super video, pal, so thanks for that. Just one highly noticeable omission from your list, and that's *Flimbo's Quest* - it was decent on the Amiga version, but shone like a platforming beacon on the C64. The graphics were cool for a C64 game, back in the day, and the smooth animation in conjunction with parallax scrolling was pretty amazing for the time. In fact, I remember playing this game to death on the C64 until I finally beat the bugger. I mean, it was a difficult game, despite the cutesy graphics, as many will remember. I just wish that someone out there who remembers Flimbo's Quest with lots of love and affection (and the necessary skill set!) would remake this classic platformer with updated graphics for the PC. Happy days...I feel nearly 30 years younger, now. 😉

Great to see Wizball on this list; I was so annoyed when I fired it up on the Amiga back in the day, after playing the c64 version to death. You're right; the controls were just slightly off somehow, so the skills I'd built up playing on the c64 didn't transfer. Pity, it was a great game.

Actually, the list can be huge. Some games, had this 8-bit feeling that was never transformed to a better game on the 16bits. For example, The Great Gianna Sisters was meant to be for the 8bits. Or Impossible Mission 2 that on the Amiga, it felt sloooow. I even liked IK+ better on the C64.
@OneEyePI
@OneEyePI 4 жыл бұрын
Agree. I think it's that 8 bit games ported across just felt like they had been given "better" graphics and not a lot else (although I was never a fan of the graphics in a lot of 16 bit games, which often felt plasticy if that makes sense). The 16 bit machines were best when used for things that 8 bit didnt do well like vector graphics.
@lordevyl8317

I think SOME of them COULD have been better on the Amiga if they weren't direct ports from the ST. Amiga fans know the pain of C64 owners who had to put up with DIRECT Spectrum ports. Not bagging on the Spectrum, but those kind of graphics never really suited the C64. The only decent direct speccy port I can think of is Fairlight

that exactly that: 8bits are designed for an era and doing certain things well, 16bits are another era and do other things which can't be done on 8bits but are limited if doing 8bits stuff. Each era has its high and low and each has its merits, there is thus no better or worse, there is what fits you and what's not. Enjoy yourself, feel good vibes and be outside often. I totally agree with Wizball being an absolute Amiga stinker. I mean for a kick off, why did they use drum sounds for Wiz sound FX? Ha ha...how lazy. You have a bass drum for the bounce sound, and a snare drum for the gunshot sound, It's like they really just couldn't be arsed at all! Wizball on the 64 has absolutely stunning music and fx, which are a huge part of the whole package, and they clearly just didn't try with the Amiga version, which could, and should've been amazing!! I have such fond happy memories of playing Wizball on the 64 with my brother as a kid, he'd play as Wiz, and i'd be Cat picking up all the lovely droplets of colour, and I was always mesmerised by the stunning music, and the equally amazing sound fx, which drew you right into that amazing little wiz world on your screen. To this day it still has the same affect on me...truly one of the best games EVER!!

I liked to play it, too, and the music stuck with me to this day (sometimes i whistle it during work) - but objectively, i cant say it was a good game. We all know, there was only one proper way (outside blind chance and glitches) to score a goal, right? Sometimes simple, rather poor mechanics, still make a fun game. Am slightly surprised that OSG didn't know about it, but hey, there were (quite literally) thousands of C64 games on the market at the time. Yup, pure nostalgia!

I had o lot of fun with many c64 games in the 80's. Wizard of war, river raid, rally speedway, Dan dare, hero, dino egs, diana sisters , raid on bangelin bay to just name a few of many many games. However, at least for me wizball is the ultimate c64 game ever made. Insanely good soundtrack, superb graphics and nearly perfect gameplay. 10 out of 10 easily. As a matter of fact wizball on a original cassette still in the Package with the paperwork and instructions is the only thing I still have left from my c64 with disk drive, ultimate cartridge and hundreds of cracked games. My sister and I played wizball so many times all the way to 999 999 points. I also did that in single mode but wizball truly shined in coop mode. The cassette is still in my kitchen drawer as a memory when my sister and I played it 35 years ago.

@@hynol I don't remember aiming on Amiga b/c I only played it on a friends comp (could try now on emulator, though), but yes, the C-64 hi-res graphics was less colorful but was much sharper and cleaner. Though, him using a really blurry old TV could've helped that a bit. My home TV was smaller but had way better tube, with denser (not more saturated, but brighter/better defined) colors and sharper image.

You need to do a video on early Microprose - from 8-bit to Civilization 1, for example. They were the No.1 publisher of the 80s early 90s with pirates, Silent Service 1 and 2, F-19 Stealth Fighter, Kennedy Approach, Gunship, etc.

I was a little sceptical when I read the title but after viewing I'm deffo inclined to agree! Most of these were classed as shite Amiga games back then. I was surprised about DOTC and Myth, I'll have to check the C64 versions out. Although not a game, my biggest disapointment was The Shoot 'em Construction Kit. I spent countless hours on it on the C64 , making games, creating loading/game over screens, it felt like you was using the power of the machine. When I upgraded to the Amiga I was excited to discover a port of SEUCK and what a pile of shite it turned out to be, just not using the Amiga's hardware at all, kak. Anyway, great vid m8 :)

Nice list and I agree on all of them, yet there are other many games that somewhy work better on C64. People don't lynch me now, but I've never been interested in Last Ninja series, still I can tell by the video that the C64 version is somehow more convincing. Talking about graphics, I think that it's often important, and sometime we like to play a good looking game only because it looks good, precisely, even if it lacks in the other important components, as well as we play Crazy Comets basically for Rob Hubbard's tune only. Comparing some Amiga and C64 versions of the same game I would say that sometime the graphics is actually really better on the C64, and with that I mean the style, the colors, and the framerate which is (an essential) part of graphics (optimization).

It's really kind of incredible how much they were able to squeeze out of the little 8 bit machine that could. So many of the games on it were better than their Amiga equivalents in spite of the inferior tech. These are all great choices, but they're just the tip of the iceberg. You could easily add another two lists of this length haha. The music in the C64 version of Defender of the Crown is so much better than on the Amiga. It's such a beautiful SID tune. I always felt the Iron Lord theme lent itself really well to the SID chip as well. The C64 just had so much great game music thanks to the SID.

Once upon a time, I played three games whose titles I don't remember maybe You could help me? The first game was about the adventures of a black-haired boy, a platform game he jumped on trees and shot green slime :D a game similar to Mr Tomato. The second game, also from the side view, we moved left, right, up and down by some soldier or special agent, commando dressed rather as a civilian, he walked around buildings, picking up rifles from the floor or from shot enemies...a bit like UnEpic from 2011 but less fairy-tale like,coloristically. The protagonist of the third game was a character who looked like Indiana Jones maybe even the game was about him the only thing I remember is quite original graphics, very natural, like Mortal Kombat, at the beginning you could move tables in some abandoned castle, or rather its ruins ... and there was water also,the furniture could float in it and we could stand on it. All games I was playing on Amiga 600

I agree with you on all of them! But most of the games I only played on one system. I don't know why I never really played some of them that I liked for C64 later on the Amiga. I did play Defender of the Crown though on both systems, but I guess I only did it because of the graphics (which was really good at the time) and not much for anything else. As you said it was better on the C64. Some of these things though I would like to blame the Atari for actually... Some of the ports was made with the intention that they only had to modify some parts and it would run on both systems (Amiga 500/Atari ST) with a less development cost. I think both systems actually suffered for this but mostly the Amiga. Platoon would have been such a game, but now looking at it (on youtube both version, Amiga and Atari ST) it seems there are some graphical differences so...

I own a Commodore portable, the SX64, but back in the day I was not specifically a Commodore fan at all till after 1985. Apparently, I was more of a Jay Miner fan, for I owned and praised first my Atari 2600, next my Atari 8 bit computer line and in the fall of1988 my Amiga 500 computer. It does sadden me, years later, to see how many Amiga titles were either simple ports from the Atari ST or just sloppy creations completed by developers who perhaps did not know the system too well or did not have the necessary development time. The result, as seen in hundreds of Amiga titles, are games that are inferior of the hardware with little to no utilization of the Copper or Blitter chips. However, what was partially responsible for the poor ports on all computers, in those days, was the rampant piracy, which reduced profits of software companies. Nevertheless, these vintage consoles have imbedded within me fond memories of surprise, amazement and fun that will follow me to my grave. Also, it has been amazing to see so many fixes to vintage 8 bit computer games and even new games developed as of late. Some of these new titles truly push the 8 bit computers to amazing and impressive levels well beyond the imagination of developers and hardware engineers of that era.

For every ST port there is a good Amiga developed title though. There were lots of ST ports but as they were on the same framework it was seen as a quick turn around for some games and after all they just wanted our money at the end of the day...i wonder how things would have been back then if we had the internet to check games out before buying
@ridiculous_gaming

@@oldstylegaming As you fully know, the Atari ST was a bargain priced machine from day one making it a fast selling 16 bit computer in 1985, so games were often first developed on the ST, due to the larger market share, and later ported to Amiga. An example of this was Dungeon Master that took about 2 years until it reached Amiga, for it was created on the ST first. However, there was no complaints here with this title, for it was a jaw dropping experience for me when I had just migrated from an Atari 130xe to Atari STFM. I also remember a few games that ran on a 512kb Amiga, but needed 1 meg on the ST as well.

While I have spent a huge amount of time gaming on the Amiga and I think that there are a lot of great games on that machine I must say that generally speaking I think that the C64 games had more heart in them. I think that on the Amiga it was much easier to make something that was more pleasing for the eyes and that they often focused most on the visuals and forgot the rest. On a lesser capable system you have to work harder to make everything work together and so they did. This is at least my feeling. Also, and I don't know if this is me just preferring the sound of the SID, but the music on the C64 was always better with very few exceptions. Right know I cannot come up with even one Amiga game with that kind of iconic music we got spoiled with on the C64. SFX, due to the better ability of playing samples, was often better on the Amiga though. I think that this trend of focusing on the visuals continued on to PC gaming as well making me loose interest in gaming. Nowadays, though, there are plenty of games that are both visually stunning and fun/enjoyable to play and there is much more variety with more indie developers and such. I guess games like Baba is you and Patrick's parabox would have been possible to achieve on the C64, for example, but I cannot recall anything like that.
