the issue with combat patrol and spearhead is that EXISTING players judge and view them based solely from the meta units in a box or the box savings, none of these youtube reviewers or players take into account the main purpose of the boxes are to have an easy to learn and play experience in one box. The real use of the boxes are lost.

i constantly talk about the box savings, viability as a starting force, and do reviews. so when you say "none of these youtuber reviewers or players" i assume you mean, none of the others. because all i talk about is this stuff.

@@WarHammerMan correct, the main stream "not to say more popular rudely but you know what i mean" articles and videos always focus on the boxes from an already collector versus a new player

I'm planning to build my own Cities of Sigmar Spearhead using some equal old fantasy models that I have. I just need a couple more of generic knights and body for cannon (I already have a dwarf crew for it too).

hell ya, i'm all for kitbashes, and value gaming. i used to do everything custom, mostly to save money. now my time is more limited, and i do love all the new stuff, so i usually just buy more, and do less lol

ya i'm with you, i was expecting a vanguard/spearhead for ironjawz a few months after the new range refresh. crazy we still dont have one!

I don't know if it is over hyped, but people who bought a 2000pts army won't want to play spearhead, especialy if they have to buy a starter to play it. New players are even more picky they want to get to 2000ASAP so they can start playing against anyone who isn't a new player. And with so few players starting any GW games from zero. Then the fact you have to buy limited boxes with factions that aren't that popular (neither sce and especialy skaven are popular around here) makes it DoA. Also living in a place where a 450-550$ salary is considered a good salary a 150+$ box isn't an easy jump in to the game.

Okay but you realise that you don't have to buy the box to play spearhead? If someone has a 2000pt army they probably have the right models to play their armies spearhead and therefore can downsize to play new players

ya i get what you mean. but most new players are willing to play smaller games to grow the community. thats why we are doing a spearhead escallation league. i have about 30 armies for 40k and sigmar, most of which range from 1k-5k points. i'm totally willing to use some of my existing models, to help grow the game, teach rules, and expand the community. if you think all people who play warhammer are selfish, you're wrong. lots of people participate in community building, or teaching opportunities, have some fun, knowing the investment in the community, will make it a better place for everyone in the long term but i get what you mean about prices, but if you cant afford an expensive army, you can play skaven or stormcast for much cheaper, buy used models, or even proxy/3d print. there are always lots of options, and people looking to help others. dont look at everything so negatively, like its a trick to get you to buy stuff...

Spearhead is a good type of game to run demos with, and also to mix in with larger game nights if some players don’t have enough time for 2k Unfortunately warhammer is a luxury+ product and if the average income is 450-550 a week (I assume?) then nothing gw does is going to fit. Not really a knock against the game, it’s just expensive and designed to be so.

It doesnt matter where you live if spearhead takes $150 to get into any other format would cost objectively more so yes it does make it much more accessable for people.

I really dig Combat Patrol/Spearhead as a format, I am a busy adult, and being able to get a game in at something in the ballpark of an hour is amazing, because while I prefer a 2k point game, I definitely don't get a lot of opportunity to put 3ish hours aside to do so.

ya i love the idea of 1 hr games, with quick set up, good rules, and less space. we have had a ton of fun playing combat patrol, after kill team got so bloated games were taking like 3 hours. its insane. i think spearhead is going to be great

i feel the same way about combat patrol. we set up and play a game in about an hour, which is really nice, considering 2k takes about 3 hours

@@WarHammerMan spearhead seems more involved than combat patrol. With the cards and special rules etc. I think spearhead has an even lower barrier to entry :)

I do personally like the appeal of being able just being able to jump into something. I would love to have time for big AOS, not in the cards for me yet.

This is endgame for me. I can not stand the full size warhammer games. I love the idea of having a dozen different spearheads to mix and match.

makes sense, i love that its an option. 40k and sigmar were not great at 500-1k pts, so combat patrol and spearhead have completely changed the game. since kill team is so rules intensive, i think games warcry and spearhead/combat patrol benefit, from ease of play, and quick setup, games, and cleanup.

ya i get the sentiment, but the quick games of spearhead/combat patrol are nice. i also play smaller games to teach, and help new players grow. i used to enjoy kill team for smaller games, but it went from taking 1 hr to play, up to over 2 hours, so it has completely lost its appeal

Iv got plans for loads of spearheads that i wouldnt usually pickup and from there ill expand the factions with the models i like the most. Im not too bothered by how good each unit is , im more excited about how the miniatures look. Besides the good units this year will probably be average units next year and vice versa.

i feel the same way. spearheads are nice boxes, and great starts to new factions. i prefer the look and style to a model, over its power. i often use far from optimized choices, in favor of cool stuff
