I was an engineer at a plastic facility for a while. I can tell you this much. The actual molding cost for models is cheaper than using a home 3d printer. That ought to tell you how much GW is gauging the average person on prices.

Does that include wages and shipping? Do they have to change their casting process every time they produce a new model? Not trying to have a ‘gotcha’ moment just genuinely curious.
@robingraves9517
@robingraves9517 2 жыл бұрын
Ok,,Wages,,casting process etc. is pretty much about ( on average) pennies per sprue ( imagine if you will that a sprue takes about 30 seconds to cast) and mold cost ( yes molds are expensive to machine) and power requirements come to next to nothing since they are molding in higher volumes. As for the shipping out of country,,import and export taxes etc,,It still doesnt add up to 60 dollars for 5 models. Unless the purposely add in a very high cost for personal profits.

@@robingraves9517 thank you for replying. It might be a bad idea, but would small batches raise the price by much? I noticed a lot of Gw products in this video were out of stock so I wondered if they just don’t make many to add a false scarcity to it.
@robingraves9517

I dont know their business practices. But normal companies dont act like GW. I know right now a lot of game shops I go to in the Atlanta area have a hard time getting orders filled. One even told me not to bother special ordering something they dont have since it will take six months for their distributer to even mention if something is coming in. GW shops dont have that problem. They get things other shops cant get in any kind of timely manner. Im suspecting that GW causes artificial bottlenecks on some models. Its ridiculous that costly molding processes are to blame. Its just bad logic to spend 1500 to 5000 dollars on a mold and then barely use it. With the customer bass they have ,I see crudloads of basic minis being made but even they cost astronomical amounts compared to manufacturing and shipping costs. I can see them being 20 to 25 dollars,,but 60 and sometimes 70 dollars for a basic squad of five or ten models? Give me a break. They act like no one knows how plastic molding is or how cheap it can be. I know the plastics they use arent the best. Ive seen Chinese toys made from better plastic. Back when I first started playing in 1990 they used better plastics when they didnt use metal. AND they were cheaper even given the rate of inflation.
@MrNotBot
@MrNotBot 2 жыл бұрын
@@nicholaslowry2366 It's mostly about the overall volume of product sold over a period of time rather than batches. The mold is the most expensive part of the process, and you need one made for each model that you're making. After you have the mold done the rest of the process is dirt cheap so there wouldn't be much difference in making 100 units or a 1000 units (compared to the cost of the mold). The less units you're making the longer it will take to cover the cost of that expensive mold, so it doesn't make much sense to make small batches. If a certain model is expected to sell poorly they might bring up the prices to better cover the cost of the mold, but they would still make big batches. Normally if you want to create a false scarcity you would make a ton of the models and then stuff them in storage, and slowly trickle them out onto the market.

But it doesn’t even take long to print… with 2 resin printers, I can print all the pieces for 15 primaris space marines in about 5 hours… that means in 1 weekend I can print about 144 basic primaris marines. I can print a single dreadnought in about 3 hours. So, conservatively, in about a month you could print and assemble probably 2 full 40k armies. Seeing as most people would spend more than 2 months just saving up for, finding, and buying each model, it is both cheaper and less time consuming to print and assemble your own models.

Hero Forge has an option to design your figure, and then pay a small amount to give you a 3d printable file of the model. Why Games Workshop doesn't do this I will never know. Customize the pose and equipment, pay $10, get the file. People will pay the money multiple times to get space marines in different poses and all GW would have to pay is the cost to keep the program and server running. Lower barrier to entry means more players means more files sold.

And worst part is, should a company selling printable blueprints get caught, so does everyone they ever did business with. come on guys, its not that easy, as you think: 1 - printed minis don't have same level of detail, they could be compared to older models though 2 - resin is fragile material, plastic is far more stronger and easier to work with 3 - if we talk about anycubic printer and anycubic resin, then they made by Chinese factories, where workers have 200-300$ salaries, so argument that gw treats their workers bad is also no so applicable i have resin printer and i still buying gw models, because all of above, even recasted pises often better than 3d prints, its great instrument for own prototypes though

In all seriousness if you're considering getting a Resin Printer... Keep in mind that Resin is poisonous on skin contact so wear proper safety gear. Also make sure the room you use it in is well ventilated. Resin isn't poisonous to smell,, despite the smell, but it can be a problem on like 10-20 years. Just open the window, turn on the fan and you're good. When the Printer makes the item, you need to wash it in alcohol (except water based resin) and Cure it with UV rays. I have a station for Curing and such for it. Some people set the models outside so the Sun can do it. I heard different people say they use different levels of alcohol. It's just simple rubbing alcohol. Manual suggests 95% and stronger, but I heard 91% is ideal. You'll wanna experiment and figure out what works best for you so expect errors to be made.

Because you can't make enough profits selling 3D files to support all the things GW do besides just selling the models. To be fair, there are some great alternative models out there but many are close to straight copies of GW models. Who do you think made the concept work and all other parts that goes into producing the finish product? They need to be paid. 3D printing also have a high starting cost, to by a printer cost around 500 $ if you want a quality in the models that are close to current plastic models. And when/if the screen wears out or you damage it that's another 150 $. It's also an investment in time, a large modell on high detailed settings can take hours to print. So I still don't see 3D printing taking out standard plastic anytime soon, but I think it will make a noticeable dent in the market. And GW really need to adjust to this in some way.
@kodain
@kodain 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheLegendMythMan Some models haven't received upgrades for over 10 years. Those who made those models got paid a long time ago. Even with maintenance, rent, and salaries thrown into the mix, GW has really expensive models. They can sell boxes like Indomitus and still make a profit, and if you can get models for that price a lot more people would buy more models. You can get a good resin printer for about 270 EUR (Elegoo Mars 2 Pro), and replacing the LCD screen for that is like 37 EUR. Even if I went with a larger model like the Saturn, which is about 500 EUR, the LCD is about 85 EUR to replace, and the screens are made to last for a long time. Yes, it takes time to print models, but you print more than one, usually, and you can do it passively while you do other things. The whole cleanup process isn't even complicated or that time consuming. As for paying itself off: A Leman Russ is about 34 EUR at Wayland Games (which is the cheapest you will find it, pretty much) for a single model. You normally field 3-6 of them in a single army. That's 102-204 EUR. It takes maybe 3-4 EUR to print one, plus 20 EUR or so for the blueprint. That's 29-38 EUR, approximately 18.6% of the cost, saving you 166 EUR. Repeat that print two or three times, and the printer has already paid itself off.
@TheLegendMythMan
@TheLegendMythMan 2 жыл бұрын
@@kodain yes, but could most people model this themselves? I think some times the argument boils down to "if everything is free" it's cheaper. But some one have to make money on sculpting the 3D models you print and there are costs over time for 3D printing, and also time consuming, that some people tends to reject when arguing for 3D printing your own armies. I would like to have a printer, I could even use it professionally, but I don't have the time or space right now and for the limited use I have now I don't think it will pay for itself yet.

Making the mould dies for plastics is very expensive - whereas a resin printer can be reconfigured between every printing at very little cost.
@MERLK2
@MERLK2 2 жыл бұрын
@@sirrathersplendid4825 Sure. The design and pre-production phase (inlcuding creation of dies) is expensive - but CAD/CAM and the possibility to go directly from there to the 3D printing/CNC-production of prototypes or dies, speed up the process quite a bit - and reduced the costs in quite some ways. Modern Design2Production times are lighting fast compared to the already relativly fast processes of the 90s (compared with older methods). I recommend everyone not familiar with the whole thing to watch videos about the scale modelling companies that show their production process - Zvezda had one for example that shows if my memory is correct how fast infantry & tank sprues get made. Once it is set up, hate to say it - injection/extrusion machine goes brrrrr. Very low production costs with over time lower & faster & better pre-production processes is one reason why we see ever better model kits in the scale model market, with relativly steady affordable prices. To compare it a bit - an almost 1 meter colosal 1:350 model of the Yamato can cost between 80 (okayish old thing from the 80/90s) to 250 bucks( hell yeah give me all the details n bling), compare that with GeeeDubs pricing. To manufacture models that can competete qualitywise AND so extremly pricewise with so to speak relativly ineffective privatly available cheap tools, one part after another, with partially very long production times, shows how very much out of space GeDubs pricing is. Especially with their reduction of possibilities and in some cases quality.
@sirrathersplendid4825
@sirrathersplendid4825 2 жыл бұрын
@@MERLK2 - It’s all about economy of scale. I’ve heard that producing a kit in plastic requires sales of around 1,000 units; whereas in traditional resin it’s a few tens of units. A 3D printer reduces that to 1 unit.
@MERLK2
@MERLK2 2 жыл бұрын
@@sirrathersplendid4825 Yes and No. A plastic injection machine is expensive ... yeah - but you DON`T buy a new machine for every new model. And as long as the machine runs, after it has amortizated itself, every consequent kit made can break even much earlier. For every new model that can be made, the ROI point is reached faster then with those that were used to get the money for the machine back - cause the new ones have only running costs n dev costs that burden those. Resin was relativly cheap to use, because GW basically afaik could recycle the dies/forms n machines that they used for the more expensive tinfigures. And one could say they didn`t care if the quality went down hill with those "finemolds" because shoddy QA. BUT ... using resin and tincasting means you are often slower then with injection molding that uses an even cheaper material with much higher output. (If tincasting has the speed of a old cowboy gatling, the injection molding machines were like a MG42 ... and the newest are like the GAU-8 :P) So yeah, the starting costs with resin were lower, the material a bit more expensive - but the output also much lower. In that case running costs n co weight alot more. And finally a 3D printer does amortizise itself only in 1 one model - if your 1 model you mentioned is one that is more expensive then the printer+running costs ;) I don`t think you thought about bits or a lonely guardsman ^^

1. "Why would they after all the time they spent railing on them?" The quality is THERE already, but expensive to achieve. Hobbyists can't often spend 10k plus on a single printer. 2. "Then why the sanding?" It's cheaper to pay a master modeler to make an oversized imperfect master model perfect than to make 1 master model from scratch. 3. "How much cheaper?" Allegedly, enough to make at least 5 "improved" masters at the cost of 1 "scratch" master on average. 4. "Where's this whole thing from" internet rumors, when a BUNCH of people are allegedly mad at a company named GW, so take it completely with a grain of salt. But it was detailed enough to SOUND real to me so rumor mill I go

Seems logical to me, it's an inexpensive way to be sure before you but the time/cost into the master for your mass production process.

If you get into 3D printing, be prepared to answer problems you didn't even know about until you have the printer. I bought an Ender 3 Pro a few weeks ago, and it's currently not operational because I had to replace the feeder motor and the feed system due to the stock one not even working. I'm absolutely for making your own stuff; though you should be prepared to learn a whole-ass set of skills to make it work properly.

It's funny how angy GW gets about models and 3d printing when Battletech has always been: "Metal models? Plastic models? Paper Standee with the unit printed on it? A Bottle Cap? Yeah sure dude want to play?". Some of the new boxes even give you pre-cut paper standees for scenarios so you don't have to paint a million models to try something out.

I'm sure you can find some 3d printing forums and/or discord servers. Stuff being discussed in this video is in a legal grey area. Much like playing hard to find, overpriced, or out-of-production vintage video games, you'll have to do some leg work on the internet and spend a few hours running down some rabbit holes to find what you are looking for.

a good option is fdm/cardboard/foam base with resin plating. so only the outside shell is high quality expensive resin. also tungsten weights and expending foam to fill in models can be nice to give some heft.

Why pay the price of a metal-figure for a plastic figure? table-top games always had these outrageous prices for a very basic product. If the figure costs 100$ I at least expect it to be made from metal.
