There is a sunk-cost fallacy with learning systems, especially that of D&D. I love D&D but it is not always the right way to go if you're looking for low-fantasy or getting away from fighting monsters. There are so many better systems to tell a story with that is heavy RPG focus. Happy you are putting content out like this!

I always tell my players who want to try something else that the more systems you learn, the easier it is to pick up new systems.
@tylerreed2409
@tylerreed2409 3 жыл бұрын
A big issue with trying new systems is that most groups aren't really filled with people who are rules oriented, so to switch to a new system often requires the GM to learn that system and then teach the group, while also doing all the other GM work. It is just a lot of heavy lifting for the person already doing the majority of the work.

True but there's opportunity cost in playing a game I'm not certain I'll enjoy. Suppose my group of five invests four, five-hour sessions in a game just to decide we don't enjoy it. That's one-hundred combined hours spent by people not enjoying what they're doing.

Matt, just putting my vote in for this video being a good idea and saying I’d love to see more! There’s diminishing returns on Running The Game (“Hey new DM, you want a resource? How about a 100+ video long playlist?!”), and branching out into new spaces like this is a good way to take a break between running to game while you DM more to get an idea for the next video.

Amy Vorpahl is such a gift to the TTRPG community! Matt, I'd love to see more content like this. Not just because Amy is so dang charming, but because bringing in a variety of people allows more content for the channel without overloading you as much, and the concept is great! I don’t comment much on anything, but I can’t understate how important this kind of project is - This channel has already done so much in terms of exploring the roots of dnd, and has been so many peoples gateway into stuff like classic fantasy literature from the pre-dnd era. I genuinely can’t think of a channel that is more suited to introducing people to lesser known games

I had 8 years and hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars invested into 5E. But, in hindsight, I started falling out of love with the system about 2 years ago. And it wasn't until 3 months ago that I finally admitted it to myself and switched to PF2E and Kids on Brooms (alternating bi-weekly). Not saying this is your situation, but I'm glad this series exists in case it helps people realize what took me 18 months to admit. Ignore the time/money invested, if you're not having fun anymore maybe it's time to switch systems, it's worth it.

Honestly, I'm one of these DM's. Our group has one dm who's great! He loves the game, loves to tinker and play with classes and i... don't compare. At all. And I'm keenly aware of it behind the screen, especially when he and his wife play. My narrative skills are good, my descriptions are crunchy, and I'm pleased overall with my grasp of stats but I'm just dissatisfied overall with my performance. This is an awesome idea for a series!!! I would love to see a follow-up one-shot for each game with the GM here showing it off and its rules in practice. Might entice more people to try than watching a series recommended elsewhere. A game may sound cool but don't really give you an idea of what they are like to play until you see them run. I feel like this is the way most people learn D&D (either by just playing or watching it played) and part of the reason it's super popular now.

Currently playing Runequest which I am enjoying for a multitude of reasons but one of the main ones is that the game has a focus on the heroes being members of their communities. You go on quests to help your community. Everyone gets magic to one degree or another. there are no classes or levels. Plus you can play Ducks! The main setting is a bronze age-styled Mythic world and one of the highlights is you can play a walking talking Duck - all of which worship a god a death to one degree or another.

@@Oldkingcole1125 Shadow of the Demon Lord. It's a super grimdark RPG with a very simple game system, which Amy said Asunder uses. To give you an idea of how easy it is to run, the designer said he intentionally wanted to make a game he could run while drunk. Initiative is super streamlined, and you're just using a D20 and some D6s. Despite simple rules though it offers tons of player options, with 3 (technically 4 if you start as a commoner) tiers of play each with selections of classes to choose from as you go. However it's easy for your PC to die or get really messed up in a variety of ways. Also no XP, you level up after every adventure/session up to 10. If you like games like Darkest Dungeon or the Dark Souls/Bloodborne games then it's perfect, though it does have the downside of going so quickly that character arcs probably won't happen

More videos like this! I'm not sure what sort of stories I'd tell within Asunder, but once I figure out something I'll try it out. Sounds really interesting!

Really hoping for more of these!! One thing I haven't found better than d&d is the sheer open-ness of d&d. I want a system that I can homebrew my own world for easily. This one seems to need the specific world a bit too much for me

You can look into the original system that Asunder uses: Shadow of the Demon Lord. It's pretty much setting agnostic and has way more options than D&D does.

I have some tolerance for being weird in front of friends but her ability to be wild in front of a camera is so confident and impressive

I do personally care what the system is because I don’t really want to sit around roleplaying or doing math for 4 hours every week lol it’s gotta be the right kinda balance of various things.

You probably want to look for roll under systems like Warhammer Fantasy Rollplay, Conan 2d20, Call of Cthullhu, Mythras, King Arthur Pendragon, or Runequest. I started rpgs with Pathfinder. It's my first love. However, I realized that Pathfinder has a lot of math which slows combat while I want quick and deadly combats. For me, I want less math and more fun. I like Pathfinder, but I don't like adding up 50 modifiers for one attack.

this is absolutely delightful. I love the signal boosting of other products and other creators! I'm deep into ttrpgs but often feel like I don't have the time to seek out these niche, dope parts of the community. Can't wait for part 2!

Asunder sounds badass! I never knew who Amy was but had heard her name many times. She’s awesome. So cool that someone with a slap stick approach to d&d was able to run a dark gritty game like the one she described. Im definitely going to check out asunder.

My group slowly but surely decided change things and rules in the system to the point in which we no longer were playing D&D. We have long since been playing the custom system and have been slowly simplifying the rules at this point.

I love this TTRPG already and will go find me a copy. And I am so thrilled for this series. After starting with Numenera, I've been hooked to collecting TTRPGs and creating new worlds and new stories. Please do more of these!

This was so fascinating to watch. One of the non dnd games my gaming group got me into was Shadowrun which our dm had many years of experience. I also now running a warhammer 40k rogue trader trpg game and will be running next year the dresden rpg which uses the fate system.
