The euro versions likely have buttons with symbols becouse of the language barriers so they only have to reprint the manual and not the actual cartridge itself also in German and you pronounced the German surprisingly well!

@@Lizlodude For movies n' shows it makes a lot of sense since they can shortcut a lot of having to fab something from scratch. I think the PKE meter from Ghostbusters was based off a brush or something like that. I've seen really old laptop coolers used as props on walls in the Expanse. It's super neat. But for this? They had to totally make it from scratch since it's all 3D. But also- they had to know what they were doing, Alien was made around the time of the Microvision - near enough anyway. So I feel like they picked it because- it just fit.

Milton Bradley (Hasbro) during the 70s had a shady deal with Ireland where labour for making toys such as board games and that electronic block game was most likely manufactured by women in laundries. That might seem innocent on the surface but a lot of companies leased out laundries at that time since women there were essentially prisoners that could be used for slave labour. Really dark shit. That went on until the 1990s if you can believe it.

Another little detail about the European buttons is that seem to be universal when it comes to languages. So the same console could be sold to multiple regions without having to change the language on the buttons. Probably cheaper to do it like that and just print the instructions in the manual than the logistical nightmare of having 20 different kind of language prints variants.

I had one, including that cartridge, it was awesome to play on the bus in the morning. The press buttons wore out over time. I probably have mine still somewhere around here, but the liquid screen is bleed toast from freezing and time. I also have or had a Merlin, Simon, the green Football better version of the football game, and an LED basketball game. The Merlin is hanging on my wall as art.

i actually have my dad's microvision still, only have the eu shooting star for anyone curious: you can bring back the dual battery setup if you cut the trace making them run in parallel so you can have them run seperately, you just need to solder new wires to your input, you wont have the explosive battery issue, just make sure you add a 9 volt capable power distributer so you dont blow anything in the og board

I doubt the 9V batteries in Parallel was a concern back then. Almont all 9V batteries in the 70s and 80s were Zinc-Carbon batteries with very low capacity. It's more of a problem when using modern Alkaline batteries with many times the output current of older batteries.

Merlin The Electronic Wizard was one of those LED games, but it actually had like 12 games programmed in! My dad had one, and I had a lot of fun with it even though I owned a GBA. I know that according to John Elder Robinson's memoir, the Microvision was having 60% of units returned as defective during the 1979 holiday season because neither the units nor the factories had any ESD protection, so you could easily destroy your unit just by swapping games. Not sure how they got that through quality control.

I’ve got one of these in my loft along with about 12 games. My recollection is that the original games had plastic buttons but the repeated pressing meant they eventually snapped off. Later games had a thin plastic membrane instead… I bought mine in the UK and I have both types. The early ones were buttons later ones membrane. Need to go find it and see if it still works 😁

I've played that (American) football game, or a variant of it... I think the one I played had the field oriented vertically? Even if not, definitely had more LEDs. I would've played it around 1990 though (+/- a year), as it was at my aunt and uncle's. They never had kids and only had it as something they picked up at a garage/yard sale with the intent to resell it at their collectable store _(see: mainly antiques)_ 😅

I had this and loved it! Those membrane keys were HORRIBLE and the matrix display became dodgy after some time, with entire rows or columns vanishing. Still, I thought it was the most futuristic sci-fi toy ever!
