Really appreciate these let’s play videos lately and especially this one because this is my favorite Genesis game. My dad bought us the Genesis around the ‘89 launch I believe around Christmas? He got us Revenge of Shinobi, Last Battle and Golden Axe. Those 3 games alone held us down for months. Almost forgot we had Rambo 3 also lol. Great times. I don’t want to go on a nostalgia rant so I’m just going to enjoy your video and keep it to myself. Thanks again for all the great content. You two are chill to watch. Looking forward to the next one. Maybe some Ranger X or Bloodlines if you can.

Happy Thanksgiving guys. Joe & Dave are probably thankful they still have a good friend to play games with. Playing local co-op gaming (not online, but in the same room) with a long time friend is something many of us take for granted, but then lose as we get older. We often move apart from one another, or we become too busy to hang out.

Best Shinobi hands down! It has superior music and less dithered graphics than Shinobi III, though of course I love Shinobi III as well. I also love the original arcade Shinobi (looking forward to the Genesis homebrew port), Shadow Dancer arcade version, and the 2 GG Shinobi games.

@Dazrael: It's fine, and it plays well, but it's just not one of my favorites. I used to play the arcade version before the Genesis version was released, and like other Sega System 18 games (Moonwalker and Alien Storm) it had to be scaled way back, or completely changed to work on a scaled down system. The arcade version had extremely impressive visuals, large character sprites, great sound effects, and I enjoyed it. It felt right in line with the original Shinobi (which I also used to play all the time in the arcade), and Revenge/Super Shinobi. So I was a bit let down to get something completely different. Strangely, the SMS would see an arcade port, which wasn't bad, but it just wasn't powerful enough to handle it.

Imo this is easily the killer app for the Gen's first year in 89. One of the best 16-bit action platformers. Eats Castlevania 4 alive with more fluid, challenging and intricate gameplay. Once you get skilled enough to beat most of the game without losing your power-up even against bosses, it's a really rewarding game. Yet because it's not from Konami, Capcom or Ninty, this series is ignored.
@retrosoul87706 жыл бұрын
The mistake that ppl make when playing Shinobi 3 is that they play it the same way you would play Revenge, carefully and tactfully. But S3 is designed differently, you should be running constantly, performing the air kick, frequently doing the running slash (which has some invincibility frames) and the double jump 90 degree knife throw. It's very speedrun friendly, play the game fast, it's mechanically more advanced than Revenge, but both are all-time classics that are woefully unappreciated.
@dazrael56586 жыл бұрын
I never really liked Super Shinobi. I think the game suffers from its slowness, especially coming from the fast movement of the ‘87 arcade game. Shadow Dancer feels a lot more like a proper Shinobi game to me.
@retrosoul87706 жыл бұрын
You're entitled to whatever opinion. Sure the arcade games are fast but they lack the added depth that Revenge of and 3 deliver. Having entire levels with 2 movement planes, double jump with the added 90 degree knife attack, a low kick, the ninjitsu, the power-up which triples your attack power and gives you a block mechanic. It's a more intricate and well-rounded experience imo. Whereas the arcade Shinobi plays alot like the Rolling Thunder games, alot more simplistic which isn't a bad thing as I like those games too but...yeah. Also, Revenge of (or Super Shinobi) plays much faster than say, Castlevania (esp IV) which everyone annoyingly praises. If any game suffers from slowness, it's that one (it also literally suffers from technical slowdown)

When I was a kid I always played with infinite shurikens. I didn't consider it a cheat at the time since I was so used to the arcade Shinobi. These days I have beaten it without the code. It is a hell of a lot harder that way. Just a week or two ago I finally tracked down the original version of this game with Batman and Rambo. I always had the "REV01" version until then with the bald flamethrower guy and Devilman.

You should try a more close up attack approach and stand closer to the power up boxes and hit them to save on shurikens. Of course you could always do the infinite shuriken trick but then that kills your chance of the bonus at the end of each level.
