A friend of mine lost his arm in Iraq and he uses that ascii one handed SNES controller a ton. I got him an SNES to GameCube adapter so he can use it on GameCube Wii and switch, and I got him a SNES to USB and he uses it on PC and his raspberry pi for emulation. He also uses the ps1 version on PlayStation 1 and 2 and 3 with an adapter.

I actually had that Joyball. It wasn't a joy, and it wasn't a ball. True story: my brother got so frustrated with it that he said, "I could use my BUTT with this stupid controller and do better!" He sat on the controller and yes, he got farther in Super Mario Bros. than he did using his hands.

I knew someone at University that used a one-handed controller with an adapter to play emulated games. He was right handed and lost the thumb from his left hand in a motorcycle accident. He said that after about three days of getting used to it, his gaming skill actually improved using only his dominant hand than it ever did when he used both.

I remember the Barracuda controller. The analog sticks apparently don't act like the ones for the DualShock, but rather the giant "PlayStation Analog Joystick" Sony used to make beforehand. The only game I had that used that kind of control was on Namco Museum Vol. 4; it was fun playing Assault with the two sticks controlling each tread. But yeah, anything that used the DualShock for analog control was not going to work for the Barracuda. Anything that can use the "PlayStation Analog Joystick" (SCPH-1110) is fair game.

Someone else has probably mentioned this, but you were using the neGcon "wrong". Rather than just twisting the two halves, if you hold it so it's about 45 degrees from horizontal front-to-back and then bend your wrists -- right hand down left hand up to turn right, right hand up left hand down to turn left, sort of "the same" as if it was a steering wheel -- you'll naturally twist the controller in the correct direction. It's a carpal tunnel nightmare, but very effective. (Oddly the Ridge Racer series are perhaps the worst games to use it with, though, as it doesn't really suit the handling model.)

It's amazing how many of these controllers are ahead of their time. The Turbo Touch would be revisited with touchscreens and the Steam Controller. The Framemeister one had dual joysticks way before it was mainstream.

Had the Barracuda 2. You're right about the rumble, it's crazy how strong it is. My one complaint is that I went through 2 of these very easily from the cables getting frayed due to normal use.

Yep, Joe actually pronounced NeGcon correctly. It's from the Japanese word "neji" meaning "screw" or "twisting". Amazing controller, too. It's become my go-to for all PS1 racing games.

IIRC, that middle setting on the Barracudas was to emulate the PS1 flight stick controller. The flight stick apparently sent a different analog signal to the system than the later analog pad and dual shock, so the dual shock couldn't give you analog control on the earlier flight sims made for the flight stick, but the Barracudas could.

I had a Barracuda controller back in the day, and there is one feature that I can't just let slide without being mentioned. Mode position 1 makes the joysticks into digital sticks instead of analog. This means that they are compatible with PRE dualshock PSX games. That alone made the controller worth keeping around. I played through all of Final Fantasy VII with the Barracuda, because it was so much easier on my thumbs.

The FPS Master controller from Gamester for Xbox/PS2. I have one. It's "almost" a great controller. The buttons are placed improperly, making them unsuitable for high speed action games. Maybe try an RPG like KOTOR.

I actually have fond memories of playing G-Police and Colony Wars with that giant Barracuda controller. The buttons were a bit stiff, but it was the first analog PSX pad I got. I've got the ASCII Grip, too, and I'm still working on beating Einhander with it.

My older brother brought home that red Epyx joystick for NES, our first controller with auto-fire. We used it to farm tons of XP in Zelda II overnight, with a rubber band tied around the controller on the fire button.

I remember seeing in a second-hand store this third-party N64 controller that had a layout similar to a Gamecube controller, with the analog stick and d-pad being on one side and the other buttons on the other. Unfortunately, I don't know how useful it was since I never actually used it, but it was a neat enough concept since I hate the original N64 controller with its awkward design and uncomfortable joystick that wears out in no time. EDIT: the one I saw was the Superpad Plus 64, but while searching for what I was talking about online, I found that there are other controllers with the same concept of simplifying the original N64 mess.

I had one for PS3 called HKS Hipermax III. It's a racing controller that's shaped like a regular controller. The directional pad is replaced with a left and right wheel and the brake and accelerate buttons look like actual foot pedals and the centre of the controller has a speedometer. It worked well on NFS Undercover

The end skit reminded me of watching two engineering students play arcade Track'n Field, but they had built a custom device they pressed against the machine with a rotating handle, it functioned as an analogue autofire. They had permission from the arcade owner of course and it had rubberized surfaces so it wouldn't destroy the machine. Pulling off insane scores with the thing. They also had a guy with a big bulky camera with them filming as they played, so in retrospect it was probably some sort of student project.

Here's one thing to consider with some of these odd shaped controllers: It may have originally been designed as an accessibility tool for people with mobility issues, but since releasing stuff like that marketed directly for people who need it can cause it to be considered a medical device (Same with a lot of "AS SEEN ON TV" stuff) and increase the price/decrease the exposure.

A friend of mine had a variant of that Ultra Racer 64 for the PC. We used to play one of the Need for Speed games in his PC. My biggest problem was oversteer. In my small collection from my early gaming days is a joystick I literally can't use anymore (unless there is some sort of adapter made). It's a Gravis Phoenix. Loved the heck out of that thing.

That Epyx joystick was one of the best designs you could get for Atari 2600, C64, and the other one-button joystick systems that were common in US and Europe. Then d-pads and 2-bottoms were invented

I had a Performance Astropad for Dreamcast, and a Stryker pad for Genesis and really liked them. The Astropad's size was what I really liked about it. It felt much more ergonomic than the standard Dreamcast controller, and still works great to this day. The Stryker I really liked too because there was a removable peg that went into the D-pad to make it like a small joystick. That really helped with the stiffness and was my go-to for Star Control. The contour of the buttons, and the finger recesses on the back made it very comfortable also. It really was a nice controller right up untill the buttons stopped working a year after we got it.

You mentioned the ASCII controller being recommended for grinding in RPGs, and I can honestly see that. You only need one hand to go through the repetitive motions when grinding in something like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, and you have an extra hand free to do something else like flipping through a book while level-grinding. I'd assume that would be a benefit to the PlayStation controllers letting you swap the left and right analog sticks. Swap character control to the right stick, and you're again free to navigate battle menus and grind away while using your left hand to read a book, eat a sandwich, or whatever. Some of the racing controllers that you showed off reminded me of this add-on for the Nintendo 64 that I never owned myself but read the advertisements in my old gaming magazines. It was a sort of clip that attached to the center analog stick on the controller and forced it into the 'up' position. (I'm guessing on how it worked based off of what the ad claimed.) The clip was shaped like a steering wheel and rotated, so you could have analog control when steering. You rotated it all the way and the stick would be 90 degrees to the left or right and you'd be turning as sharp as possible. If you barely turned it, you'd be at a slight angle and your car would be just slightly turning in-game. My guess is that it worked as well as the quality of controller you clipped it to, and if you attached it to an official N64 controller, you'd have a really good time with it. Another odd controller that I read about but never owned was an early full-body motion controller. It was a large ring with infrared lasers pointed straight up. You'd stand in the middle of the ring and your punches and kicks would supposedly contact the beams and trigger the appropriate buttons. No idea how well it worked, but since I've never seen anybody show it off in action, I'd guess it was a piece of junk that nobody remembers. There was also a vest with rumble functionality built in to the whole thing so you'd physically feel the impact, but the advertising made it sound like it was built like a joy buzzer and would give you a zap when the rumble was featured. (It advertised something like 'feel every hit your character takes!') Never had one of those for myself either, but I'm hoping I'm right in that it was merely a big rumble-feedback setup, the zap idea seems too easy to cause injuries or lawsuits. Seems like a fun idea, as long as you weren't playing something like a fighting game where you'd be constantly getting hit, unless you're some sort of masochist.
