16:00 I'm not trying to say anything about Howard Lincoln or Nintendo in general, but in that instance at least, Nintendo steeped to a new level of low. First of all, he calls it a "sega night trap game", when it was third party. If that wasn't bad enough, what he says next is just crindgeworthy: "Small children bought this at toys R us. You know that as well as I do". First, the console (genesis) was marketed to adolesants. Second, the boxart clearly didn't look like it would have been for children. Third, Night Trap was on the Sega CD, a very unpopular add-on, and untill these hearings, from what I know, nobody heard of it. What he said sounded like a lot of kids bought it, which was almost certainly false. I should also point out that one of the main reasons people think games are for children is because Nintendo marketed the NES as a toy for kids when it first came out, in order to not get cought up in the dislike of games after the crash. I know the Sega guy was being really self-premoting, but he didn't distort the truth to make Nintendo look bad.

I remember the senate hearings when they were ongoing. I was in the sixth grade, and MK was all the rage at the time. The kids at school and I were scared that they were actually going to ban video games. The thing that's always bothered me the most about the government debates on video games is how many of these anti-game politicians have supported real-life war. You know, the kind that leaves people maimed, crippled, homeless, and dead. I'm not political at all, but their hypocrisy over media violence is utterly hysterical. By the way, I played Night Trap and Eric Harris' Doom wads, and not only did they suck big time, I've never become the monster anti-game politicians worried about.

Some other controversial games to consider: Wolfenstein 3D - Some of the same stuff as Doom, but this one got in trouble for including Nazis and Adolf Hitler. In Germany, the Jaguar version was confiscated. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - The infamous "No Russian" mission got a lot of negative press across the world. Very little was from Russia though. It was largely in the USA, UK, and Australia, where it was used as proof of games being evil. Bonus points for the infamous PC port, which is what gamers REALLY cared about. Pokemon Red/Blue - People often forget this, but Pokemon attracted plenty of controversy back in the day. People associated it with occult themes, anti-semitism, racism against Africans, dog-fighting, encouraging children to gamble, Zionism, and the free masons. All at once. NARC - I'm not talking about the 80's arcade game where you killed the evil druggies. I mean the 2005 re-imagining on the PS2. It let players use confiscated drugs to alter the character's abilities, and it got banned in Australia. Command & Conquer: Generals - This 2003 RTS game may look like an average "Near Future" Starcraft wannabe, where America and China team up to fight some huge terrorist army. But it got banned in both China and Germany. China's government got upset at how certain landmarks got destroyed in the game, while Germany's government banned it for being pro-war propaganda that encouraged killing civilians. Hatred - The 2015 shooter that got the first "Adults-Only" rating ever from the ESRB solely for its violent content. Was described by many media sources, including gaming-focused ones, as a murder simulation. Rule of Rose - A PS2 psychological horror game about scary kids. Got banned in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, and was condemned by a number of politicians across Europe. Some of the game's opponents argued using lies, including "you have to bury small children alive to win." Because of all of this, the game sold horribly, and the developer went out of business. Tomb Raider - Both the original and 2013 re-imagining have been criticized for sexual content. Maybe you could compare and contrast the criticisms for the two games? Just a thought. Zelda: Skyward Sword - Just start talking to Zelda fans about this game. The controversy knows no bounds!

"But what about the other games where you punch/shoot/slash everything that moves?" Well, in those other games I'm okay because I'm aware they're the enemies and they'll do me harm if they come in contact with me, so I just beat'em up before they can do the same to me... Bully was controversial when it came out. Jack Thompson and other people said it was a Colombine simulator. Can you believe that shit? They say it encourages people to bully kids. That's not what the game is about. Your objective is to stop the fighting at Bullworth and bullying the bullies.

@TheDecatonkeil9 жыл бұрын
+michael hall (Rwanime442) Well, the game was tonally confused itself and in terms of "objective" a bit of a mess: The story kinda is about that but along the way you have a lot of missions in which you partake in tame, cartoony bullying. But you also do things like physically attacking teachers and other figures of authority, even if that won't result in other thing than they being paralyzed by a pain in their foot to resume a fiercer pursuit that will end in unavoidable detention if you get caught by them (you can't "defeat" them). You also become at some point an accomplice in a bit of tame... I don't know what word to use about that... the P.E. teacher has you steal the laundry of the girls. I think what really makes it a not all that offensive is that even if NPCs are somewhat defined characters, there isn't a gameplay mechanic that would allow for repeated, extended or more serious bullying to register: you can't really make of bullying in the videogame as a statement about someone's race, sexual orientation, gender, or other or take it to a very serious point (you can't bully someone to push him or her to commit suicide, for example). The game itself is pretty good and fun (very easy, though) and you can make whatever you want of it. It's more a Bart Simpson simulator than a bullying simulator or... well, that thing you say Thompson said. I think the biggest controversy about the game came from inside gamers, as some saw it as a game that attacked bully victims, a group in which many gamer geeks counted themselves. Bully itself didn't paint the nerds as "saints", but as indulging in other types of bullying themselves. There was even an important nerd character which surrounded himself in somewhat nazi party inspired banners in his campaign for school president. I don't think there's really anyone who is completely against "the dictatorship of political correctness", but that a lot of people would change it for their own, advocating for Hatred when they, as gamers, wanted the heads of the Housers and Rockstar at large for Bully or for GTA which they may have seen as pandering to non-traditionally geeky gamers.
@Noobsaibot219 жыл бұрын
+michael hall (Rwanime442) Jesus, GameSack could get a whole episode out of some of the nonsense he came out with. +michael hall (Rwanime442) I feel the same way about Doom. +Wyrdwad That would be a good one... It did raise a lot of controversy back in its day too - But not because of the things it ripped off... After all the game was a Parody of the genre. Elder scrolls IV, World of Warcraft, Sea dogs, Thief: Deadly shadows, nobody was safe from this thing's rabid devouring of copyrighted imagery. Spawn wasn't the only movie plagarized either, as apperantly there is also imagery taken from the likes of Pirates of the Carribean and Beetlejuice. It's actually so shamelessly disgusting that I'm a little impressive how they got away with seling this thing as late as 2008. I think I even saw it on store shelves once. Sorta regret not buying it, because that thing's a shitshow definetly worth experiencing blind.

This episode is clearly an improvement for the show! It features both a PC game and Jen. Both should definetely appear more. :) I did enjoy the subject though.

Well I wasn't even a teen yet when the Night Trap game came out. When it did, I ended up playing it and literally laughing hysterical at all the death scenes. I'm not emotionally deranged, yet. >.> Violent games never made me a killer. In fact, games helped me to gain my career. Good topic guys. =)

Those GTAV sequences are gold. I haven't laughed that hard in awhile. Terrorizing a random citizen is priceless-- and underscores the appeal of the sandbox genre. I guess that I need to approach the GTA games less as narrative experiences & more as sandbox experiences to better appreciate them. I really enjoyed this episode from stem to stern. Great job.

I forgot to mention the beloved western rpg Fallout franchise. Fallout 2 especially has the most controversial content of all. Everything from using drugs, alcohol, becoming a porn star, fucking anybody for info, to even contracting a venenereal disease. This is one game you will never truly see on a Nintendo console. EVER. If Fallout 2 was ported to consoles in 1998 instead of only being relegated to PC, parents the world over would have a serious conniption fit.

Manhunt, The Punisher (ps2) Also I remember a long time ago some well known lawyer tried to sue Midway's Mortal Kombat Armageddon saying that they had included a character like him in the game, which was not true, it was created by a player on Kreate a Fighter. No Duke Nukem? The lawsuits between 3DRealms and Gearbox went for a long time.

How Stupid Were Kids,&,Teenagers Back in The 80s,&,90s That They Actually Acted Out The Bullshit in These Games Especially Night Trap?

Outside of a few who were mentally unstable, none. It was just the government trying to enforce laws where they didn't need to. Granted, with the way the games industry is going with micro transactions and loot boxes, we need something blocking them. But I worry about overreaching too...

Regarding the controversy games like Mortal Kombat generated in the '90s due to their violence, it reminds me what happened to various movies back in the '70s: Although both The Exorcist and A Clockwork Orange were released before I was born, people lost their minds after they were released and both were effectively banned in my country (the UK) until around 20 years ago.

"There's Nintendo with cartoon figures".Why does Nintendo always get stereotyped!
@nintyfan19919 жыл бұрын
+Horzzo It's pathetic. They've always been seen as kiddy all because Mario and Zelda are still around and Pokemon has more or less taken Metroid's place in popularity, making Samus lose her part of the "triforce" to a kid with monsters. And they are still Nintendo's biggest sellers to this days (though don't tell the crowd who all thought they NEVER had this reception in the NES/SNES days and even the GameCube era, though the N64 era comes close to an exception, but even that had predominately "kiddy" reception).
