The Master System port of SoR2 was done by TecToy in Brazil and was a direct port of the Game Gear version. It wasn't designed from the ground up like SoR1 was specifically for the Master System by Sega. TecToy has tons of games that are horrible but the master system is still being made there and is the longest production record holder for any console to date.

"Four years later, Konami decided to port this title to the Game Boy Advance ..." surely a simple spoken typo, Contra 3's GBA port was more like 10 years later (as the title screens in this very video show). Great episode, loved the topic! :) A poor port that springs to mind is Hexen for PS1. Really not a recommended means by which to play that game and one of the roughest FPSs on the console, IMO.

Dorelaxen Sega had to port the games like Sonic Team did with the mega drive sonic games for Sonic Jam on the Sega Saturn. Dreamcast only has 16 mb of ram, and only a 200 mhz CPU, it very obvious that with those specs, the DC can't handle perfect Sega Mega Drive emulation with hardware of 1997/98.

I had the Saturn import of SOTN as well, and personally i enjoyed it as an extension of the playstation version.. yes the extra loading, slowdowns, and bad graphics overall was a let down, but regardless of these issues, I liked that it was a more complete version of the PS1 version. Had extra items, extra secrets, and the extra areas.. some of these extra items and areas are present in the PS1 version but required hacking to access as they were incomplete, or removed for whatever reason from the US version (i.e. 2 extra familiars in saturn version, maria boss fight had Maria's theme music (Guardian), etc). Also the trap door and save area that leads to the extra underground garden area is present on the PS1 version if you get in there through hacking/glitching but dead ends with some glitched textures too at the save point, which points to that these levels were suppose to be in the PS1 version but weren't finished in time or cut out and the area's access blocked off. So it's nice to have them in the Saturn version, even if they seem odd or out of place due to the unique enemies and music these areas have.

the most disappointment i had with a port is sega touring cars on the Sega Saturn, after Daytona, Sega rally and Manx TT i wasnt expecting anything else but more of the same of sega's classic arcade action..... oh what a let down! Apart from what's wrong with the port, i have to ask, why didn't they get the actually nuts and bolts of the game working properly before they added all the Easter eggs? so many of them but on a game that's not really worth playing! I don't get the logic behind it!

Update: There is now a fan made update/patch for the Saturn Symphony of the Night that restores transparencies, fixes the aspect ratio issues, and dramatically improves the performance. It even uses the 4mb memory expansion cartridge to remove almost all of the loading. It's amazing what people have been able to do.

Starcraft 64 could be argued as a "shitty port" - although they did wonders in making a true RTS game playable on console, the massive amounts of compression on cutscenes, more repetitive dialogue from units, and generally just bad sound and video quality/resolution overall make it the vastly inferior way to play the game, even if you ignore controls.

Not really a mad idea. All of the OG Command & Conquer games came out on the PSOne and a few made their way to the Saturn. Command & Conquer had polygon based graphics at a time when that was rare even on the PC. To my knowledge, the N64 port of Starcraft was really well received at the time.

The Playstation also go an awful port of Diablo. Blizzard was really trying to take their PC success and translate it to consoles where the real money was. It wasn't until WOW that Blizzard started making the real money they deserve. The PC user base just wasn't big enough at the time.

How about Dragon's Lair arcade to NES and Space Ace arcade to SNES? Say what you like about the Jaguar CD, but that was the first time console gamers got a really good port of those two games. Other than the rooms being in the same order every time you play on Dragon's Lair, every single room was in the game and the graphics were almost identical to the quality of the arcade.

A piss poor port that comes to mind for me right away is the GameCube version of Megaman Anniversary Collection compared to the PS1 Rockman Complete Works. The port manages to: 1. fuck up the controls 2. be missing a TON of features, especially the remixed sound options and bonus unlockables 3. have the 8-bit chiptunes ON AN MP3 LOOP rather than be properly programmed to auto-loop. This means the tracks eventually fade out, and repeat. WTF?! 4. It's poorly translated. 5. Contains Megaman 8, but has HEAVILY compressed FMVs and the music tracks are cut so they are all shorter and sound inferior. 6. It runs in 480i only. The PS2 and Xbox versions of Anniversary Collection don't fair much better either, but both of them don't have quite as many flaws.

Realizing how dangerous posting this is (on the level of defending a "George Lucas Revision" when it shouldn't)... 1. Oh come on! The button swap isn't THAT bad, especially if you've never played Mega Man (much/at all) before and don't take long to get used to. Not like there's any lag or anything. 2. "Missing sound options and remixes". That sounds minimalist at best. 3. Again, I can easily overlook this. 4. If by translated, you mean from Japanese to English. Eh... no comment. If by translated from originals, again, going to agree to disagree. 5. That is the fault of the GameCube disc I'm afraid. 6. Again, a fault of the GameCube, so by that logic, every GameCube game should suck (even "superior" versions of games like RE4 and Twilight Princess)
@SatoshiMatrix1
@SatoshiMatrix1 8 жыл бұрын
1. What you're missing is that Anniversary Collection, like all game complications, is primarily aimed at prexisting fans who own at least one game in the series already. Therefore, those are the _first_ people to notice controls. It's true to say that if you are new you can easily adapt, but the anniversary in anniversary collection was the 20th. That means 20 years of people playing with B = shoot, A = jump. It is unforgivable for them to get that wrong. 2. No. It's not minimalist. The arranged soundtracks were one of the key draws. Otherwise, you might as well play the originals. The whole point of the Rockman Complete Works was to offer little extras to make them the definitive versions of the classic games. Without them, it's just a shotty port. 3. It's a sign of laziness. A symptom of the whole project. 4. As is, from Rockman Complete Works to Megaman Anniversary Collection. Their translation work was awful, with grammar mistakes and incorrect translations. Apparently translated by babelfish.com and not a real person who knows both languages. It's garbage. 5. Which is why they shouldn't have put it all on ONE GameCube disc! Other games split across two, even other Capcom games. It was a bad call to compress everything down to a single disc. 6. No it isn't. The GameCube was fully capable of progressive scan. Atomic Planet just didn't bother. Then again, the PS2 version also only runs in interlaced mode which is even more unforgivable given that the PS2 version is literally based on the PS1 source code just ported over and that version ran progressive scan. Atomic Planet just did a piss poor job with Anniversary Collection all around. interlaced video is always inferior. It's true to say the GameCube library didn't suffer from 480i only mode quite as badly as the PS2, but all of the sixth gen consoles were capable of 480p and it was only devs on Xbox that systematically used it.

Except you don't get MM7, 8 or the Arcade games. I'll take my GameCube collection, thanks. And yes, the button swap is pretty dumb, but it's not as bad for Classic Mega Man as it would be for X (which they did actually fix for X Collection...though you can already swap buttons in every X game anyway)

I enjoyed Tony Hawk 64 despite missing FMVs. Back then, the only difference I knew about between PS1 and N64 was blood. The really annoying part about THPS N64 was having no memory ca- I mean, pak. So unless you could beat everything in one go, you were stuck at the beginning.

The PS1 had a memory card.......

True, but with some N64 games you could save to the cart. So when we got a game that needed the memory card, it was a surprise rather than the expected norm. I guess the problem wasn't really the game itself lol.

Me and Hybrid Heaven in a nutshell. By the time I was old enough to look for used Controller Paks online, my cart started freezing up on test runs very early in the game, so what's the point? Also, I was excited to finally own Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and...I need a Pak for that too. COME ON MAN.

Speaking of piss poor ports of Jet Grind Radio. The Steam release was a disaster. It's not the somewhat shoddy textures and strange way they implemented cell shading nor the clunky controls that was the problem... it was the fact that you couldn't save the game. This was due to a spelling error in the .ini file where they wrote 'save' instead of 'SAVE.' Yup, just needed to be in all caps to work. They never patched this. Best anyone who bought the game could do was follow online tutorials on how to manually patch their own game. Hence, the leader boards are barren. And despite the underground clamor for wanting new JGR games, no one talks about the steam version.

What are you talking about? I was just playing the game, directly from Steam, the other day. Save support works and the graphics look amazing and it has native ultra widescreen support.

Gotta go with SEGA Smashpack vol. 1 on the Dreamcast.... you'd think emulating Genesis games on a Dreamcast would be a nobrainer? I still cannot fathom how they messed up the sound, practically ruined Yuzo Koshiro's great soundtrack in Streets of Rage II. :(

The reason Symphony of the Night is worse on Saturn is because it isn't actually a 2D game. The game is made of images of sprites on top of polygons viewed from the side, and the Saturn isn't as good at polygons as the PlayStation.

the Saturn version was handled by KCEN, while the PSX version was handled by KCET. KCET was the much more experienced team. Still despite the ugly graphics, I prefer the Saturn version. So much more to explore.

bvzxa3 Incorrect. The Saturn version of SotN was actually programmed singlehandedly by my dad. Other games programmed by my dad include, but are not limited to: Battle Monsters - Saturn Shadow Blasters - Genesis Ultraman - Super NES Super Bunghole - Jaguar Mr. Mario Man - PS4 Computer Jones - PC

Don't forget to add the VS capcom games on the PSone, like xmen vs street fighter and marvel vs capcom. As a piss poor ports it lack frames from the arcade and most importantly the tag feature. The Sega Saturn ports were far superior. Idk why these Psone ports were ever released, when they're not even close to the arcade.

one of the worst "ports" that I know of is the original Genesis Sonic games poorly converted and optimized to PAL mega drive, causing Sonic to be drastically slower and not showing off the true blast processing
