How does Tasbot compensate for variables? Or has this been optimised to the point where the enemy patterns are always the same?
@benjaminlee98511 ай бұрын
Nothing is truly random in a video game - the "random number generator" in this game is actually doing a bunch of fancy math to make a fixed sequence of random-looking numbers. The "seed" for the random number generator is generally user input or the system clock, so if you make the same inputs at the same time the game will always get the same random numbers.
@UNHchabo11 ай бұрын
@@benjaminlee985 While most TASes shown at GDQ are being played by feeding inputs to the console in real-time, this one was actually just an emulator video (well, a *pair* of videos, due to Save vs Kill) being played back. Unfortunately Super Metroid is very difficult to Console Verify because of desyncs between the CPU and SPC. Dwango made reference to that in this video, he went into more detail at SGDQ2018, where that TAS *was* being played back on a console. They needed to do some weird movement to make sure it would still sync up, which made the Ceres Escape time worse than many human runners are capable of.
@markwesterlund97111 ай бұрын
This is only true for old games and games where the developers have specifically chosen to seed random number generators like that

Is the tas a prerecorded run? Or a robot capable of making frame exact inputs and responses, while doing a new run?
@syntheticsaturn11 ай бұрын
kinda both? basically the inputs themselves are recorded in sequence and played back by plugging it into the game, so it is possible for it to go off-sync if it were to get unplugged for a second, for example

@eudaimonistic11 ай бұрын
Tool Assisted Speedruns (TAS) are recorded using emulators to control the game frame by frame with perfect precision. This allows the TAS author to break the game doing things that a physical controller and actual humans cannot. Ordinarily, you would playback the TAS on a compatible emulator to watch the game play out. Physical verification is the process of performing the run playback on a physical device, 'proving' that the TAS is valid. TASBot is a physical device that plays back the controller inputs in real time, serving as both a physical verification and a really cool looking piece of tech. You could accomplish the same thing with a relatively low-tech PCB and the know-how, but it wouldn't look nearly as cool in a live setting. There has also been a ton of work to improve the accuracy and performance of the device over the years. So yes, TAS is pre-recorded. The physical ROB the robot model is just a cool looking model casing for the PCB that plays back exact controller inputs.

This was a video recording of the TAS. For most TASBot shows, they are sending the controller inputs directly to the console. Unfortunately, SNES TASes are extremely challenging to sync with the console due to some timing variations in the audio processor.

I've noticed this in a bunch of the GDQ videos from this iteration, but what's up with the bits and pieces of people talking in the background? Were the mics just too sensitive or was there a hot mic that wasn't supposed to be or? It could be worse but it's certainly distracting. If anyone is aware of what happened with this I'd appreciate knowing more.

@CZeke11 ай бұрын
It's an odd decision, but TASvideos has always been very aggressive about "quality over quantity"; they don't want too many runs for any one game and have no problem removing a category if they think other runs for the same game are more entertaining. RBO will probably return eventually when someone finds a way to do it that's different enough. Anyway, "obsolete" runs don't go anywhere -- they're still hosted on the site. (If I had to guess, the reason for this philosophy is that TASing was incredibly controversial in the early days. Speedrunners felt, with some justice, that these impossibly fast runs would steal their audience. The TASers had to prove their work could be entertaining for its own unique reasons instead, and so there was good reason to have only the best examples on TASvideos.)
